A major portion of the story concerns the search that the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps conducted in 1948-49 throughout the islands of the South Pacific. The log of that search, which was only declassified in 2010, reveals some very surprising facts that have never before been made public. The book is occasionally funny, often sad, and reveals startling facts surrounding the attempted recovery of WWII MIAs in the South Pacific.

Drawing on ethnographic research in four distinct communities—the Chicago neighborhoods of Andersonville and Argyle and the New England towns of Provincetown and Dresden—Japonica Brown-Saracino paints a colorful portrait of how residents new and old, from wealthy gay homeowners to Portuguese fishermen, think about gentrification.
