Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Cape Kismet, where the neighbors are nosy, the bookstores offer an escape, and epic romances abound. The Perfect Man: What if the man she’s been searching for has been there all along? Ellie Amore is a writer on a mission: find out what makes women fall in love, what makes a man so perfect readers don’t care if they’re fictional. To do this, she’ll need the help of her best friend, someone who watches out for her, feeds her tacos, and doesn’t mind when her cat hates him. Sometimes, perfect is subjective. Sometimes there’s no such thing. But all the time, he’s there. The Perfect Boyfriend: What if she chose the wrong brother? Eleven years ago, Kennedy said yes to a date with the man she’d spend the next decade with. Until now. She finds herself heartbroken and homeless. When her ex’s brother shows up like a knight in shining riot gear, all she can think is how much time she’s wasted loving the wrong man. The Perfect Husband: What if she accidentally married the right guy? Cecilia is known for doing stupid, impulsive things, but this is by far the worst. A drunken night leads to a strange man claiming they’re married. Harley is an infuriating rebel with a camera and a panty-melting grin, but he’s also more. He’s her friends ex, and maybe the one man who can match her irresponsible ways. The Perfect Bachelor: What if her boss isn’t the jerk he appears to be? Sadie hates Grey the moment she crashes into him outside the bookstore. The feeling grows when she realizes he’s the only lawyer in town hiring, and she needs a job. They get off to a rocky start filled with plant pranks, one hundred pounds of potatoes, and a parade of his ridiculous friends. But the more time she spends with the charming playboy, the more she realizes it’s all an act, and underneath the designer suits and chiseled jaw is a person worth getting to know. This set contains four complete sweet and slightly spicy romances with plenty of swoons, heartwarming moments, and laughter.

Paul Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of the Repairman Jack novels LEGION A message courier pushed into the path of a train. A young woman commits a terrible act of violence. A family man puts a gun to his head. John Smith suspects these aren't random events — someone engineered them. But who — or what? And why is John Smith their next target? MAN OF WAX Ben Anderson goes to bed Sunday night, lying next to his wife in the comfort and safety of their Pennsylvania family home, to wake up the next day in a rundown motel in California — alone. He doesn't know how he got there, he doesn't know where his family is, and written in dried blood on the bathroom door are the words LET THE GAME BEGIN. Soon Ben is contacted by Simon. Simon knows all there is to know about Ben, more than he cares to remember himself. If Ben wants to save himself and his family, he will have to do everything Simon says. As the game begins — with stakes much higher than either man can imagine — no one knows where it will lead or how it will end. Only one thing is for certain: this time the game will change everything. THE INNER CIRCLE Two years ago Ben Anderson woke up in a rundown motel, three thousand miles from home, his family missing, and the words LET THE GAME BEGIN written in blood on the back of the bathroom door. Now, with his past life gone, Ben has become a soldier in Carver Ellison's army against Caesar. But when a mission goes wrong and one of their team members is murdered, it's the last cryptic word spoken that will lead Ben and the team one step closer to the Inner Circle — a step that may bring them salvation ... or get them all killed. END GAME Two years ago Ben Anderson woke up in a rundown motel, three thousand miles from home, his family missing, and the words LET THE GAME BEGIN written in blood on the back of the bathroom door. Two years ago, everything changed. Not just for Ben and his family, who he believed was lost forever, but for those who had orchestrated the whole ordeal and who had stuck Ben in a game he was never supposed to win. Ben vowed he would never play the game again. But now, after learning a startling truth, Ben has no choice but to once again play the game. He wakes up in a rundown motel — a very familiar rundown motel — with the words LET THE GAME CONTINUE on the back of the bathroom door. Caesar and his people are expecting a good show. And Ben’s about to give them one. Because every game must end, and Ben will be the one to end this game ... or die trying.

Book Man Enough

Download or read book Man Enough written by Justin Baldoni and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A GRIPPING, FEARLESS EXPLORATION OF MASCULINITY The effects of traditionally defined masculinity have become one of the most prevalent social issues of our time. In this engaging and provocative new book, beloved actor, director, and social activist Justin Baldoni reflects on his own struggles with masculinity. With insight and honesty, he explores a range of difficult, sometimes uncomfortable topics including strength and vulnerability, relationships and marriage, body image, sex and sexuality, racial justice, gender equality, and fatherhood. Writing from experience, Justin invites us to move beyond the scripts we’ve learned since childhood and the roles we are expected to play. He challenges men to be brave enough to be vulnerable, to be strong enough to be sensitive, to be confident enough to listen. Encouraging men to dig deep within themselves, Justin helps us reimagine what it means to be man enough and in the process what it means to be human.

Book excerpt: The Bonfire of the Vanities defined an era--and established Tom Wolfe as our prime fictional chronicler of America at its most outrageous and alive. With A Man in Full, the time the setting is Atlanta, Georgia--a racially mixed late-century boomtown full of fresh wealth, avid speculators, and worldly-wise politicians. Big men. Big money. Big games. Big libidos. Big trouble. The protagonist is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta real-estate entrepreneur turned conglomerate king, whose expansionist ambitions and outsize ego have at last hit up against reality. Charlie has a 28,000-acre quail-shooting plantation, a young and demanding second wife--and a half-empty office tower with a staggering load of debt. When star running back Fareek Fanon--the pride of one of Atlanta's grimmest slums--is accused of raping an Atlanta blueblood's daughter, the city's delicate racial balance is shattered overnight. Networks of illegal Asian immigrants crisscrossing the continent, daily life behind bars, shady real-estate syndicates, cast-off first wives of the corporate elite, the racially charged politics of college sports--Wolfe shows us the disparate worlds of contemporary America with all the verve, wit, and insight that have made him our most phenomenal, most admired contemporary novelist. A Man in Full is a 1998 National Book Award Finalist for Fiction.

Book excerpt: In this collection, one of the world's leading scholars in the field of masculinity studies explores the historical construction of American and British masculinities. Tracing the emergence of American and British masculinities, the forms they have taken, and their development over time, Michael S. Kimmel analyzes the various ways that the ideology of masculinity—the cultural meaning of manhood—has been shaped by the course of historical events, and, in turn, how ideas about masculinity have also served to shape those historical events. He also considers newly emerging voices of previously marginalized groups such as women, the working class, people of color, gay men, and lesbians to explore the marginalized and de-centered notions of masculinity and the political processes and dynamics that have enabled this marginalization to occur.

Book In Search of the Triune God

Download or read book In Search of the Triune God written by Eugene Webb and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the broad umbrella of the Christian religion, there exists a great divide between two fundamentally different ways of thinking about key aspects of the Christian faith. Eugene Webb explores the sources of that divide, looking at how the Eastern and Western Christian worlds drifted apart due both to the different ways they interpreted their symbols and to the different roles political power played in their histories. Previous studies have focused on historical events or on the history of theological ideas. In Search of the Triune God delves deeper by exploring how the Christian East and the Christian West have conceived the relation between symbol and experience. Webb demonstrates that whereas for Western Christianity discussion of the doctrine of the Trinity has tended toward speculation about the internal structure of the Godhead, in the Eastern tradition the symbolism of the Triune God has always been closely connected to religious experience. In their approaches to theology, Western Christianity has tended toward a speculative theology, and Eastern Christianity toward a mystical theology. This difference of focus has led to a large range of fundamental differences in many areas not only of theology but also of religious life. Webb traces the history of the pertinent symbols (God as Father, Son of God, Spirit of God, Messiah, King, etc.) from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament through patristic thinkers and the councils that eventually defined orthodoxy. In addition, he shows how the symbols, interpreted through the different cultural lenses of the East and the West, gradually took on meanings that became the material of very different worldviews, especially as the respective histories of the Eastern and Western Christian worlds led them into different kinds of entanglement with ambition and power. Through this incisive exploration, Webb offers a dramatic and provocative new picture of the history of Christianity.

Book Men Explain Things to Me

Download or read book Men Explain Things to Me written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Critics Circle Award–winning author delivers a collection of essays that serve as the perfect “antidote to mansplaining” (The Stranger). In her comic, scathing essay “Men Explain Things to Me,” Rebecca Solnit took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters. She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!” This book features that now-classic essay with six perfect complements, including an examination of the great feminist writer Virginia Woolf’s embrace of mystery, of not knowing, of doubt and ambiguity, a highly original inquiry into marriage equality, and a terrifying survey of the scope of contemporary violence against women. “In this series of personal but unsentimental essays, Solnit gives succinct shorthand to a familiar female experience that before had gone unarticulated, perhaps even unrecognized.” —The New York Times “Essential feminist reading.” —The New Republic “This slim book hums with power and wit.” —Boston Globe “Solnit tackles big themes of gender and power in these accessible essays. Honest and full of wit, this is an integral read that furthers the conversation on feminism and contemporary society.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Essential.” —Marketplace “Feminist, frequently funny, unflinchingly honest and often scathing in its conclusions.” —Salon

Book The Complete Works of Zhuangzi

Download or read book The Complete Works of Zhuangzi written by and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only by inhabiting Dao (the Way of Nature) and dwelling in its unity can humankind achieve true happiness and freedom, in both life and death. This is Daoist philosophy’s central tenet, espoused by the person—or group of people—known as Zhuangzi (369?-286? B.C.E.) in a text by the same name. To be free, individuals must discard rigid distinctions between good and bad, right and wrong, and follow a course of action not motivated by gain or striving. When one ceases to judge events as good or bad, man-made suffering disappears and natural suffering is embraced as part of life. Zhuangzi elucidates this mystical philosophy through humor, parable, and anecdote, deploying non sequitur and even nonsense to illuminate a truth beyond the boundaries of ordinary logic. Boldly imaginative and inventively worded, the Zhuangzi floats free of its historical period and society, addressing the spiritual nourishment of all people across time. One of the most justly celebrated texts of the Chinese tradition, the Zhuangzi is read by thousands of English-language scholars each year, yet only in the Wade-Giles romanization. Burton Watson’s pinyin romanization brings the text in line with how Chinese scholars, and an increasing number of other scholars, read it.
