Book Nuclear Particle Correlations And Cluster Physics

Download or read book Nuclear Particle Correlations And Cluster Physics written by Wolf-udo Schroeder and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely presentation of new results, challenges, and opportunities in the quickly developing field of nuclear cluster physics, presented by an international group of eminent theoretical and experimental scientists active in the field. Their work reveals how correlations of nucleons can appear spontaneously, propagate, and survive in nuclear matter at both low and high densities. Characteristic nuclear substructures, beyond those predicted by mean-field or collective scenarios, appear on microscopic and cosmic length scales. They can influence the dynamics of fusion of light nuclei and the decay of heavy, fissioning nuclei or of systems produced transiently in heavy-ion reactions. A must-read for young scientists entering the field and a valuable resource for more seasoned nuclear researchers!

Book New Horizons in Fundamental Physics

Download or read book New Horizons in Fundamental Physics written by Stefan Schramm and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the state-of-the-art in selected topics across modern nuclear physics, covering fields of central importance to research and illustrating their connection to many different areas of physics. It describes recent progress in the study of superheavy and exotic nuclei, which is pushing our knowledge to ever heavier elements and neutron-richer isotopes. Extending nuclear physics to systems that are many times denser than even the core of an atomic nucleus, one enters the realm of the physics of neutron stars and possibly quark stars, a topic that is intensively investigated with many ground-based and outer-space research missions as well as numerous theoretical works. By colliding two nuclei at very high ultra-relativistic energies one can create a fireball of extremely hot matter, reminiscent of the universe very shortly after the big bang, leading to a phase of melted hadrons and free quarks and gluons, the so-called quark-gluon plasma. These studies tie up with effects of crucial importance in other fields. During the collision of heavy ions, electric fields of extreme strength are produced, potentially destabilizing the vacuum of the atomic physics system, subsequently leading to the decay of the vacuum state and the emission of positrons. In neutron stars the ultra-dense matter might support extremely high magnetic fields, far beyond anything that can be produced in the laboratory, significantly affecting the stellar properties. At very high densities general relativity predicts the stellar collapse to a black hole. However, a number of current theoretical activities, modifying Einstein’s theory, point to possible alternative scenarios, where this collapse might be avoided. These and related topics are addressed in this book in a series of highly readable chapters. In addition, the book includes fundamental analyses of the practicalities involved in transiting to an electricity supply mainly based on renewable energies, investigating this scenario less from an engineering and more from a physics point of view. While the topics comprise a large scope of activities, the contributions also show an extensive overlap in the methodology and in the analytical and numerical tools involved in tackling these diverse research fields that are the forefront of modern science.

This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of talks presented at the First International African Symposium on Exotic Nuclei (IASEN-2013). The symposium was held at Cape Town, South Africa from 2 - 6 December 2013. The IASEN2013 was dedicated to the problems of producing and investigating nuclei far from the line of stability. The symposium was organized by two scientific centers: iThemba LABS, South Africa and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna). The main goal of the Symposium was to discuss the latest results on the production and study of the properties of the lightest to heaviest nuclei, as well as the plans for future joint investigations in the field of exotic nuclei. The talks were presented by the leading scientists in the field. Among the topics of the symposium were the following: production and study of properties of nuclei in extreme states, strongly deformed nuclei, highly excited and nuclei far from the line of stability as well as nuclei having large angular momenta. New results of the investigations are presented in this book. In particular, the latest results on the synthesis of new superheavy elements are also presented. At the Symposium were talks devoted to existing detecting devices and accelerators of exotic nuclei as well as to the future projects for the creation of similar set-ups.

Book Clustering Phenomena in Atoms and Nuclei

Download or read book Clustering Phenomena in Atoms and Nuclei written by Marten Brenner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these days of specialization it is important to bring together physicists working in diverse areas to exchange and share their ideas and excitement. This leads to cross-fertilization of ideas, and it enriches, as in biological systems, a specialized field with new strength, development and direction derived from another area. Although this might be an uncommon thing, it is an important step in our under standing of the physical world around us, which is, after aIl, the main purpose of physics. The seed for this conference was really sowed when one of us (MB) and Mr. Manngärd showed some a-scattering data at backward angles to FBM one summer about four years ago. That occasion led to a long research collaboration between the Abo Akademi physicists and other scientists in several countries. The actual idea to explore the possibility of holding a conference, however, crystallized in the summer of 1989 during a visit of FBM to Abo Akademi. The final decision to organize a conference was made after MB visited Profes sor Ben Mottelson in Copenhagen and Professor Anagnostatos in Athens. At this point it was recognized that there are similarities as weIl as differences between clustering phenomena in nuclei and systems consisting of atoms. It was therefore conjectured that it could be very stimulating to bring together these groups to exchange their ideas and to leam from each other's fields. A conference along these lines, we hoped, would contribute to an increased mutual understanding.

Book Towards a Unified Description of Quantum Liquid and Cluster States in Atomic Nuclei Within the Relativistic Energy Density Functional Framework

Download or read book Towards a Unified Description of Quantum Liquid and Cluster States in Atomic Nuclei Within the Relativistic Energy Density Functional Framework written by Petar Marević and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we develop a symmetry-conserving collective model for nuclear structure studies based on the relativistic energy density functional framework. Axially-symmetric quadrupole- and octupole-deformed reference states are generated by solving the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov equations. In the particle-hole channel of the effective interaction we employ the covariant point-coupling DD-PC1 functional, while the non-relativistic pairing force separable in momentum space is used in the particle-particle channel. Collective correlations related to restoration of broken symmetries are accounted for by simultaneously projecting reference states on good values of angular momenta, parity, and particle numbers. In the next step, symmetry-restored states are mixed within the generator coordinate method formalism. This enables us to obtain detailed spectroscopic predictions, including excitation energies, electromagnetic multipole moments and transition rates, as well as both the elastic and inelastic form factors. The described framework is global and it can be employed in various nuclear structure studies across the entire nuclide chart. As a first application, we will study formation of clusters in light nuclei. Nuclear clustering is considered to be a transitional phenomenon between quantum-liquid and solid phases in nuclei. In contrast to the conventional homogeneous quantum-liquid picture, spatial localization of alpha-particles gives rise to a molecule-like picture of atomic nuclei. In particular, we carry out a comprehensive analysis of quadrupole-octupole collectivity and cluster structures in neon isotopes. A special attention is paid to the case of self-conjugate 20Ne isotope, where cluster structures are thought to form already in the ground state. Finally, we study the low-lying structure of 12C isotope. We focus on the structure of bands built on 0+ states that are known to manifest a rich variety of shapes, including the triangular configurations of the Hoyle band and 3-alpha linear chains in higher states.
