Book excerpt: ‘He did not stop to observe his kills, nor to wipe blood off his face. I am a King, he reminded himself. I must be the best among my men, the most fearsome warrior that Solar blood can produce.’ More than a thousand years before Rama, civilization lay fragmented by wars between Aryas and their enemies. From a tribe at the frontlines of this battle, rose the boy king Ikshvaku, the first Manava, founder of the first kingdom in the Indian subcontinent. This is a story of the first King of our lands – the founder of Suryavansha – of betrayal and loyalty, of dynasties and destruction. A perfect beginning to The Scrolls of Aryavarta. Who founded the ancient cities such as Prayaga and Kashi? Who established Ayodhya, and when? What were the various Arya tribes that populated ancient India? The Scrolls of Aryavarta seeks to answer these and many other questions, and The Seal of Surya is one story in this universe. ‘A rocking read. True blast from the ancient past.’- Krishna Udayasankar

Book Ineffability An Exercise in Comparative Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Ineffability An Exercise in Comparative Philosophy of Religion written by Timothy D. Knepper and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is an exercise in comparative philosophy of religion that explores the different ways in which humans express the inexpressible. It brings together scholars of over a dozen religious, literary, and artistic traditions, as part of The Comparison Project's 2013-15 lecture and dialogue series on "religion beyond words." Specialist scholars first detailed the grammars of ineffability in nine different religious traditions as well as the adjacent fields of literature, poetry, music, and art. The Comparison Project's directors then compared this diverse set of phenomena, offering explanations for their patterning, and raising philosophical questions of truth and value about religious ineffability in comparative perspective. This book is the inaugural publication of The Comparison Project, an innovative new approach to the philosophy of religion housed at Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa, USA). The Comparison Project organizes a biennial series of scholar lectures, practitioner dialogues, and comparative panels about core, cross-cultural topics in the philosophy of religion. Specialist scholars of religion first explore this topic in their religions of expertise; comparativist philosophers of religion then raise questions of meaning, truth, and value about this topic in comparative perspective. The Comparison Project stands apart from traditional approaches to the philosophy of religion in its commitment to religious inclusivity. It is the future of the philosophy of religion in a diverse, global world.

Herein we get an accurate picture of India`s golden age, the growth of her various institutions, her activities of expansion, colonization and her intercourse with Indonesia, China and other countries. Book Images of Mithra

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philippa Adrych
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-03-09
  • ISBN : 0192511106
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Images of Mithra written by Philippa Adrych and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a history of use extending back to Vedic texts of the second millennium BC, derivations of the name Mithra appear in the Roman Empire, across Sasanian Persia, and in the Kushan Empire of southern Afghanistan and northern India during the first millennium AD. Even today, this name has a place in Yazidi and Zoroastrian religion. But what connection have Mihr in Persia, Miiro in Kushan Bactria, and Mithras in the Roman Empire to one another? Over the course of the volume, specialists in the material culture of these diverse regions explore appearances of the name Mithra from six distinct locations in antiquity. In a subversion of the usual historical process, the authors begin not from an assessment of texts, but by placing images of Mithra at the heart of their analysis. Careful consideration of each example's own context, situating it in the broader scheme of religious traditions and on-going cultural interactions, is key to this discussion. Such an approach opens up a host of potential comparisons and interpretations that are often side-lined in historical accounts. What Images of Mithra offers is a fresh approach to the ways in which gods were labelled and depicted in the ancient world. Through an emphasis on material culture, a more nuanced understanding of the processes of religious formation is proposed in what is but the first part of the Visual Conversations series.
