Book The Biology of Sea Turtles Volume I

Download or read book The Biology of Sea Turtles Volume I written by Peter L. Lutz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea turtles have existed for millions of years, making them fascinating subjects of study. In the last 20 years, the science of sea turtle biology has expanded at an exponential rate, leading to major advances in many areas. This book synthesizes the results of these advances and focuses on how these endangered marine reptiles operate in, adapt to, and are dependent upon particular features of their marine environment. New technology in data gathering, such as DNA analyses, remote sensing, and physiological monitoring techniques, has led to a much greater understanding of the biology of the sea turtle at all stages of their life history.

Book The Biology of Sea Turtles

Download or read book The Biology of Sea Turtles written by Jeanette Wyneken and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first volume of The Biology of Sea Turtles was published in 1997, the field has grown and matured in ways few of the authors would have predicted—particularly in the areas of physiology, behavior, genetics, and health. Volume III presents timely coverage of emerging areas as well as the integration of approaches and information that did not exist even a decade ago. The book assembles the foremost experts in each topic to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on sea turtles available today. New areas covered include in vivo imaging of structure, spatial distributions of marine turtles at sea, epibiosis, imprinting, parasitology, and climatic effects. Life history is explored in three chapters covering age determination, predator-prey interactions, and mortality from bycatch. The Biology of Sea Turtles, Volume III will inspire scientists and students to explore and expand their understanding of these intriguing animals. The book provides clear baseline summaries, thoughtful syntheses, and effective presentation of the most fundamental topics spanning form and function, health, distributions, behavior, genetics, evolution, and ecology. Its scope and depth make it the definitive go-to reference in the field.

Book An Evaluation of Interactions Between Sea Turtles and Poundnet Leaders in the Chesapeake Bay Virginia

Download or read book An Evaluation of Interactions Between Sea Turtles and Poundnet Leaders in the Chesapeake Bay Virginia written by Katherine Lamont Mansfield and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, thousands of sea turtles seasonally utiliz.e the Chesapeake Bay and coastal waters of Virginia as foraging grounds and developmental habitat. Sea turtles migrate north into Virginia's waters in the spring when sea temperatures warm to approximately 18° C (Coles, 1999). Since 1979, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has recorded high sea turtle mortalities in the spring of the year when sea turtles first migrate into Virginia's waters. Each year, between 200 and 400 sea turtle stranding deaths are recorded within Virginia's waters. The vast majority of 1hese strandings are juvenile loggemead (Caretta caretta) and Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) sea turtles. Historic stranding data show that 50.0% to 55.0% of the yearly turtle deaths occur in May and Jmie when the turtles first enter the Bay (Lutcavage, 1981; Lutcavage and Musick, 1985; Keinath et al., 1987; Coles 1999; Mansfield et al., 2002). At the time when stranding coW1ts are highest, mean water temperatures range between 18° and 22° C (Coles, 1999). Kemp's ridleys also have an additional peak in strandings in 1he fall (October and November) when temperatures begin to drop (Lutcavage and Musick, 1985; Coles, 1999). Despite research efforts over the past 24 years, many questions still remain regarding the sources of spring mortalities. State stranding counts have risen steadily over the last ten years (Mansfield et al., 2002). This increase may in part be due to either intensified fishing interactions, an increase in the sea turtle population. To address this problem, VIMS, Wlder contract and supplemental fimding from 1he National Marine Fisheries Service and Virginia's Commercial Fishing Advisory Board, conducted aerial, swface and sub-surface fisheries surveys and aerial sea turtle population surveys in the Chesapeake Bay during the 2001 season.
