This volume's contributors use the concept of viapolitics to name and foreground this contested entanglement and examine the politics of migration and bordering across a range of sites. They show how these elements constitute a key site of knowledge and struggle in migratory processes and offer a privileged vantage point from which to interrogate practices of mobility and systems of control in their deeper histories and wider geographic connections. Susie Protschky contends that visual representations of nature and landscape were core elements of how Europeans understood the tropics, justified their territorial claims in the region, and understood their place both in imperial Europe and in colonized Asia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her book thus makes a significant contribution to studies of empire, art and environment, as well as to histories of Indonesia and Europe. Surveying a rich visual culture developed over a period of some 350 years of Dutch colonial engagement with Indonesia Susie Protschky demonstrates how views of the archipelago’s environment were far from simple topographical souvenirs. Rather, this book reveals how images of the tropics visually articulated colonial attempts to legitimize and historicize what were in fact continually changing and contested claims to Dutch territorial sovereignty in the Indies. Further, colonial images of nature were routinely inflected with diverse cultural preoccupations, among them the constitution of gender, class and racial boundaries in Indies society; the tenor of sexual mores in the tropics; and the political role of religion in the archipelago. Landscape art thus indexed colonial views on a range of pressing social and political concerns.

Book excerpt: Most Canadians are city dwellers, a fact often unacknowledged by twentieth-century Canadian films, with their preference for themes of wilderness survival or rural life. Modernist Canadian films tend to support what film scholar Jim Leach calls “the nationalist-realist project,” a documentary style that emphasizes the exoticism and mythos of the land. Over the past several decades, however, the hegemony of Anglo-centrism has been challenged by francophone and First Nations perspectives and the character of cities altered by a continued influx of immigrants and the development of cities as economic and technological centers. No longer primarily defined through the lens of rural nostalgia, Canadian urban identity is instead polyphonic, diverse, constructed through multiple discourses and mediums, an exchange rather than a strict orientation. Taking on the urban as setting and subject, filmmakers are ideally poised to create and reflect multiple versions of a single city. Examining fourteen Canadian films produced from 1989 to 2007, including Denys Arcand’s Jésus de Montréal (1989), Jean-Claude Lauzon’s Léolo (1992), Mina Shum’s Double Happiness (1994), Clément Virgo’s Rude (1995), and Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg (2007), Film and the City is the first comprehensive study of Canadian film and “urbanity”—the totality of urban culture and life. Drawing on film and urban studies and building upon issues of identity formation in Canadian studies, Melnyk considers how filmmakers, films, and urban audiences experience, represent, and interpret urban spatiality, visuality, and orality. In this way, Film and the City argues that Canadian narrative film of the postmodern period has aided in articulating a new national identity.

Book excerpt: Estuarine wetlands play important roles in providing various ecosystem services, such as providing habitat for living organisms, preventing seawater intrusion, conserving biodiversity, regulating microclimate, and promoting nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. Estuaries are home to many mega-cities, such as New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Tokyo, accompanied by frequent human activities. These human-induced disturbances have rapidly altered the structure and function of estuarine ecosystems through land reclamation, pollution, overfishing, and altered flows. Moreover, estuarine wetlands have been greatly threatened by intensifying global climate changes, particularly more frequent tsunamis, sea-level rise, and large-scale biological invasions, which will not only affect primary and secondary productivity, community composition and distribution, and biodiversity, but also natural ecohydrological and biogeochemical processes, and will ultimately disrupt ecosystem services. To mitigate such negative impacts, a growing number of estuarine wetland restoration projects have been undertaken in recent years. These projects aim to re-establish a variety of ecological attributes, including community structure (species diversity and habitat) and ecological processes (energy flow and nutrient cycling), which implies increased resilience and resistance of estuarine ecosystems to abiotic and biotic stressors. However, ecological restoration practices are not always satisfactory in the face of uncertainties from intensifying global changes and socioeconomic variation. Ecologists, biologists, environmentalists have been working on finding more effective solutions to restore degraded estuarine wetland ecosystems on a global scale. The concepts of “nature-based solutions”, “adaptive management” or “ecological networks” seem to offer better prospects and are now being used to reframe estuarine restoration on critical uncertainties reduction, climate change adaptation, and mitigation strategies. As the world enters the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), countries and organizations around the world will pay greater attention to the innovation of ecological restoration underpinnings to ensure that estuarine restoration achieves its full potential in delivering social and ecological coordination and, ultimately, sustainable development. Therefore, it is important to discuss how anthropogenic disturbances and climate change affect estuarine wetlands and how the latest restoration framework can guide future practices towards conserving and restoring the biodiversity of estuarine wetlands.

The development of global urban projects is one manifestation of this move towards centrality in urban situations. These large-scale urban projects are the result of governments' seeking competitive advantage in the global economy. They are critical components of a nation's global infrastructure. In the booming economies of the Asia Pacific Rim prior to the Asian Economic Crisis these urban developments were seen as key components of national economic policies. In their making they require a conscious effort to arrange material infrastructure and reinforce that there is a role for urban design in this making. Emerging Urbanity is an exploration of this role in nine global urban projects in the Asia Pacific Rim.
