Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sea-Gull, Vol. 2 of 2: La Gaviota Stein was much affected. "Ah, Maria!" he exclaimed, showing the paper to his wife; "this man is great in everything, - in rank, in heart, and in virtue. He calls me his friend! Me, who am only a poor surgeon; and speaks of gratitude while loading me with favours!" "What's all this money to him?" replied Maria, - "a man who has millions, so our hostess tells me, and whose estates are as big as provinces! Besides, if it had not been for you, he would have been lame for the rest of his life." At this moment the duke entered, and cutting short Stein's expressions of gratitude, said, - "I am come to beg a favour. You will not refuse it, Maria?" "What is there that we could refuse you?" Stein hastened to say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections, 1923, Vol. 2: Part II Messrs. Ouaritch, and the present part of Collections (ii. 2) consisting mainly of Professor Moore Smith's extracts from the accounts of Cambridge colleges; while for 1924 it is arranged that the Society shall share with the Walpole Society in the publication of an illustrated catalogue of the Chatsworth collee tion of Inigo Jones' drawings for masques. There does not appear to be very much new information available respecting any of the plays in this list. When the Society's reprint of Mariam was prepared'the Huth copy, which was the only one known to contain the dedicatory sonnet, was not available, but the leaf in question was subsequently reproduced and circulated to members from a copy in the pos session of Mr. W. A. White. Concerning this leaf the intro duction contained the remark: 'it will be observed that the leaf in question is an insertion, for the title forms the real AI of the volume.' This is an error. Through the kindness of Messrs. Quaritch it has now been possible to inspect the very fine copy formerly in the possession of Lord Mostyn. This lacks indeed the sonnet-leaf, but it has the original blank at the beginning and forming a half-sheet with the title-leaf. It follows that the sonnet-leaf, signed 'a', is in fact the original ai, and forms an integral part of the volume. The fact that, so far as is known, it survives in two copies only, shows that it must have been cancelled. The reason for this is not known, but there seems no reason to suppose that it throws any doubt on the arguments by which the authorship has been established. As regards earlier publications a few facts should be men tioned that have come to light respecting Sir T/comas More since the issue of the Society's reprint. In the first place the hand in which the original text of the play is written, said to be that ofa scribe in the reprint, has been identified as belonging to Anthony Munday. The hand referred to as 'c' in the reprint, and described as that of a playhouse review, is now known to appear likewise in the theatrical 'plot' of T/ce Seven Deadly Sins, preserved at Dulwich College (ms. X1x), and in another similar document in the British Museum (ms. Addit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Splinters, 1923, Vol. 33 Miss Beals was coming out Of the library and she smiled at Janet Sue and said, Hello. Janet Sue had a queer feeling inside her. She wanted to throw her arms about her teacher, but all she did was try to smile sweetly in return. She couldn't even smile, she just grinned with her mouth wide open, and then she flew upstairs to her room and wrote a passionate love letter. Later, her note deep in her pocket, she stole into the school room where Miss Beals taught Algebra. There was another teacher at the desk, Miss Hammond; but she rose at the moment and went out, frowning at the little girl as she passed. Miss Hammond was both gaunt and intellectual, and Janet Sue was secretly afraid of her. Miss Hammond combed her hair straight back; she nearly always wore black dresses; and her mouth was turned down. Janet Sue waited until she had gone, and then she slipped the note into the desk.
