Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scripture Doctrine of the Atonement: And Its Place in the Christian System In speaking thus, however, we must not shut our eyes to the objections which have been urged against the particular method by which this deliver ance is commonly held to have been effected. And first, it is argued that the Atonement is merely a super uous means for the forgiveness of sins, which God is always ready to forgive simply on the sinner's own confession and amendment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Holy Scripture: Respecting the Atonement The Atonement is a pure matter of revelation. Whether as regards the truths which it embodies, the principles on which it rests, or the ends to which it is conducive, we have no reliable means of in formation beyond what God has been pleased to give us in His word. In approaching such a subject our question ought ever to be, What is written in the Scriptures How readest thou Nor can we be too careful lest we advance any position but such as, on full and fair inquiry, has been found to be either expressly set down in the Holy Scriptures, or by good and necessary consequence deducible from them. Accordingly, I have chosen the inductive in pre ference to the ordinary dogmatic method of dis cussing this important subject, believing the former method to be not only the more satisfactory to an intelligent inquirer, but at the same time the more consistent with that reverence which is due to the oracles of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Atonement, Faith, and Election: To Which Is Prefixed Some Thoughts on Natural Theology, and the Truth of Revelation I was raised on the frontiers of Kentucky, in the midst of the Indian war, where men were only respected in proportion to their valor and skill in fighting Indians, and killing wild beasts and I verily thought that to be a brave skilful warrior: and a good hunter was the greatest honor to which any man could attain. When I got religion I had but little learning, I could barely read and write, and that but very indifferently. I then thought, and yet think, that God then called me by his Holy Spirit to preach the Gospel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Bible Doctrine of Atonement

Download or read book The Bible Doctrine of Atonement written by H. C. Beeching and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Atonement: Six Lectures Given in Westminster Abbey The lectures in this volume were delivered in Westminster Abbey during the Lent of 1906, on the foundation of Dame Joan Upton; who by her will dated Nov. 13, 1710, bequeathed a sum of 150 "to be invested, and the annual income thereof to be paid to five learned and orthodox divines of the Church of England, selected by the Dean, Sub-Dean, and Archdeacon of Westminster, for five sermons to be preached in the Collegiate Church of St. Peter on five Fridays in Lent for ever." The practice in recent years has been for a member of the Chapter to give the sermons, and to preach six instead of five; but on the present occasion, as the lecturer was anxious to leave London at the conclusion of his period of residence, he satisfied the requirement of the trust by preaching five sermons; and at the same time complied with the present custom of having a sermon on each of the six Fridays in Lent, by reviving the permission to nominate a "learned and orthodox divine" from outside the collegiate body. Professor Nairne accepted the invitation to conclude the course of lectures by taking for his subject the teaching about Atonement in the Epistle to the Hebrews. It may be well to repeat the announcement made in the writer's previous volume of Westminster Lectures, that their purpose being catechetical and not critical, it has not been thought necessary to refer to authorities or to give reasons for preferring one interpretation to another on points which are in dispute. The lecturers have expressed their own views and convictions with a full sense of responsibility, and with a firm faith that a more thorough understanding of the doctrine of Holy Scripture on this most vital of all questions will unite believers more closely in their adherence to the Catholic faith, and recover many who from misconception have withdrawn themselves from the Christian fellowship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scriptural Doctrine of the Atonement Illustrated and Defended The Atonement of Jesus Christ is a subject of deep and vital importance. It forms the basis of our holy religion; it lies at the foundation of a sinner's hopes for eternity. It constitutes the grand and distinguishing peculiarity of Christianity. Such a subject deserves our solemn and de liberate consideration. We should approach it with hum ble and candid minds; desirous of discovering the truth, and fearful of being deluded by error. Let us, then, in humble reliance on Divine assistance, look at the nature, the extent, and the necessity of the atonement made by our Lord Jesus Christ. Download or read book Doctrine of the Atonement As Taught by Christ Himself written by George Smeaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrine of the Atonement, as Taught by Christ Himself: Or the Sayings of Jesus on the Atonement, Exegetically Expounded and Classified My task in this work has been simply to determine, by strict exegetical investigation, the import of Christ's words, and to reproduce His thoughts by the exact interpretation of lan guage. I have no other desire than to ascertain what He did say, and to abide by it and the principle on which alone it is safe to carry on investigations into doctrine on any point, is, I am fully persuaded, to go to the Scriptures, not for the starting point of thought alone, but for the substance of thought as well, or for the rounded and concrete development of the doc trine in all its elements: and these will be found in Christ's sayings, if we but patiently investigate them. It is not, then, to the Christian consciousness that I appeal with some modern teachers, nor to Christian feeling and Christian reason with others, but to the sayings of the Great Teacher, and of His commissioned servants, employed as His organs of revelation to the Church of all time.
