Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical novel of prejudice and plague, The Scourges of Heaven sweeps gracefully, joyfully, painfully across centuries and generations. Through Cynthia Anne Ferguson, orphaned aboard a vessel carrying immigrants, hopes, dreams, and cholera from the Old World to the New, David Dick paints a world where the causes of disease are little understood, where faith is not always a comfort, where human questioning often goes unanswered, and where unexpected death is frequently attributed to the wrath of an angry God. Cynthia's story unfolds in the midst of the first of four great cholera epidemics to sweep America in the mid-nineteenth century, and her journey through life, from New Orleans up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and across the Bluegrass to Lexington, parallels the track followed by the deadly scourge. More powerfully told than any factual, statistical, or scientific account could ever manage, yet based upon historical events, this tale of disease, ignorance, and narrow-mindedness is supported by a central theme of hope that ultimately brings redemption.

  • Pages : 123 pages

Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to Nathan Ron's Erasmus and the “Other.” Should we consider Erasmus an involved or public intellectual alongside figures such as Machiavelli, Milton, Locke, Voltaire, and Montesquieu? Was Erasmus really an independent intellectual? In Ron's estimation, Erasmus did not fully live up to his professed principles of Christian peace. Despite the anti-war preaching so eminent in his writings, he made no stand against the warlike and expansionist foreign policies of specific European kings of his era, and even praised the glory won by Francis I on the battlefield of Marignano (1515). Furthermore, in the face of Henry VIII’s execution of his beloved Thomas More and John Fisher, and the atrocities committed by the Spanish against indigenous peoples in the New World, Erasmus preferred self-censorship to expressions of protest or criticism and did not step forward to reproach kings of their misdeeds or crimes.

Book Morals on the Book of Job Volumes 1 to 3

Download or read book Morals on the Book of Job Volumes 1 to 3 written by Saint Gregory the Great and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 1970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following Commentary may perhaps be regarded with the less interest by some readers, as not being founded on a critical examination of the original Text. Perhaps, however, there may also be readers, who are glad to have their attention withdrawn from difficulties, to them insuperable, and fixed on those deep and pervading characteristics, which it is the privilege of holiness to read in the sacred page. Criticism may contradict the interpretation of a sentence, and give a different turn to particulars; but the main scope of the work is founded on principles of a higher order, and involves a perception of truths to which the acutest critic may perchance be blind. The utmost that criticism can do for the study of Holy Writ is to furnish as it were a correct Text for the reading of the spiritual eye. And if there is any Book in the sacred Canon in which the bearing of words is more important than the mere thing said, it is the Book of Job. Aeterna Press

Book St Petersburg Dialogues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph de Maistre

  • Release : 1993-03-09
  • ISBN : 0773563806
  • Pages : 444 pages

Download or read book St Petersburg Dialogues written by Joseph de Maistre and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993-03-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written and set on the banks of the Neva, St Petersburg Dialogues is a startlingly relevant analysis of the human prospect in the twenty-first century. As the literary critic George Steiner has remarked, "the age of the Gulag and of Auschwitz, of famine and ubiquitous torture ... nuclear threat, the ecological laying waste of our planet, the leap of endemic, possibly pandemic, illness out of the very matrix of libertarian progress" is exactly what Joseph de Maistre foretold. In the Dialogues Maistre addressed a number of topics that are discussed briefly or not at all in his other works already available in English. These include an apologetic for traditional Christian beliefs about providence, reflections on the social role of the public executioner and the "divinity" of war, a critique of John Locke's sensationalist psychology, meditations on prayer and sacrifice, and a mini-course on "illuminism." The literary form is that of the "philosophical conversation" – one that allowed Maistre to be deliberately provocative and to indulge his taste for paradox, a "methodical extravagance" that he judged particularly appropriate for the eighteenth-century salon. Translator and editor Richard Lebrun provides a full scholarly edition of this classic work, complete with an introduction, chronology, critical bibliography, and generous explanatory notes. The Dialogues will be of interest to scholars of literary history as well as the history of ideas.

Book The Real Scriptures of God Old Testament

Download or read book The Real Scriptures of God Old Testament written by James Platter and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 1139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside the covers of this book you will find the Real Scriptures of the Christian churches. Many church leaders know that other Christian churches hold to these books but they are only willing to state what they have been brain-washed to believe, that is about the other inferior books: It isn t in the canon (of scripture) formed of course by the early Catholic Church at various stages and Councils from the fourth century A.D. therefore no one has the right to change what is in the canon of scripture and the Catholic Church changed it in their councils not in agreement of other Christians but to hide their offence at the words of God. They would not even imagine that different churches have different scriptures and assume that the correct canon of scripture must be the one first declared by the Catholic Church and its priests but other priests must be considered demented or apostate, but they are not affected by the changes they made to the canon of Scripture over many centuries. They will not consider the canons of Orthodox Churches or others because they vary in different regions of the world. So is European Christianity based in the Vatican City right about all its holy scriptures while everyone else s church scriptures are false scriptures? Ethiopia it seems got most books of scripture right even with their translation into an ancient language! The Real Scriptures , edited by James Platter above, a layman who formerly studied the scriptures for many years with the Baptist Bible Fellowship in San Dimas, California in the United States, but now rejects the reduced 1627 A.D. Version of the KJV Bible, and formally learned the Greek language of the New Testament at Capernwray Missionary Fellowship, Moss Vale, N. S. W. Australia under the Reverend Alan Catchpoole in 1973.

Book The Original Aramaic New Testament In Plain English with Psalms Proverbs

Download or read book The Original Aramaic New Testament In Plain English with Psalms Proverbs written by Rev. David Bauscher and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-03-11 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a translation (8th edition) of The Aramaic New Testament (Aramaic was the language of Jesus and his countrymen of 1st century Israel) in an English prose translation of The Peshitta New Testament. This translation is derived from the author's Aramaic-English Interlinear New Testament. Aramaic was used in Mel Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ" to make the film as realistic and accurate as possible. This New Testament will surprise and thrill the reader with its power and inspiration coming from the words of "Yeshua" (?Jesus? in ancient Aramaic) as He originally spoke them, in a literal and readable English rendering. Abundant documentation of the Aramaic Peshitta as the original NT is included. 609 pages, including 209 pages of documentary notes comparing Greek and Aramaic readings to show the originality of the Aramaic and the Greek as a translation.
