This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scot in British North America, Vol. 4 HE lamented death of the author, whose clear, incisive g style, vigorous thought, and painstaking research, have imparted so much interest to the preceding pages, leaving the manuscript of the concluding pages of this vol ume incomplete, renders apology super uous for all delay in presenting it to the public. Another hand has completed the unfinished task with the honest endeavour to follow, as far as possible, the lines laid down by the author. A gen erous, and fair-minded public, will make due allowance for the difficulty of undertaking, at short notice, to deal with a subject demanding accurate historical and geographical knowledge and exactness of statement to do even a measure of justice to the work. It is eminently fit that a book of the nature of the Scot in British North America should include some notice, how ever fragmentary and imperfect, of the writer, whose early decease has left such a void in the ranks of Canadian liter ature. The personal details that, had he lived, the modesty which was so conspicuous a feature in his character, would have prevented his giving, may now appropriately be sup plied. William J. Rattray was born in London, England, about the year 1835, his father being a Scot and his mother English. The family came to Canada about the year 1848, settling in Toronto, where Mr. Rattray, Senn, was, for many years engaged in trade, being highly respected as a man and a citizen. William J. Rattray entered Toronto University about the year and devoted himself earnestly to study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scot in British North America, Vol. 3 If the writer felt obliged, in courtesy, to express his re grets at the delay, unavoidable though it was, in the issue of the preceding instalment of The Scot, he is under still greater obligation to do so now. The present section of the work relates exciting political questions of our times, and covers events which have transpired under our own eyes. It is not expected that all readers will agree with every view of a particular issue presented here. Contemporary events can hardly gain the necessary perspective before time has lengthened the vista and softened the coarser colours by the mellowing power of distance. If, however, the writer has succeeded in convincing his readers of a sincere effort at impartiality, and an honest desire to judge independently, with all the information accessible, he will be content that some of them should dispute opinions expressed in these pages. All he can plead is the difficulty of his task; it is not a quiet sunset eve he has b on required to limn, but a busy hive of men moving and toiling around him. The purely biographical portion of the work has been the chief cause of delay and anxiety. At this moment names occur to the memory which should not have been omitted, and such sketches as here given are far from complete, from lack of information. This defect may be, so far as possible, remedied in the concluding volume, by necessary addenda. Meanwhile, with apologies for all unavoidable deficiencies, the writer bids his indulgent readers adieu - not finally, but an revoir. Download or read book The Scotch Irish Or the Scot in North Britain North Ireland and North America Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles A. Hanna and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scotch-Irish or the Scot in North Britain, North Ireland, and North America, Vol. 1 Hese volumes are designed to serve as an introduction to a series of Historical Collections which the writer expects hereafter to publish, relating to the early scotch-irish settlements in America. They are not in tended as a history of the scotch-irish people, for such a work would require more time and labor than have been expended upon the present undertaking. The subject is one, like that of the history of America itself, which must wait for some future gifted historian; but unlike the subject of American history in general, it is also one concerning which no comprehensive treat ment has ever been attempted. Such being the case, in order to enable the reader to understand the relation of the scotch-irish to American history, it has seemed necessary to make a brief general survey of the origin and old-world history of the race to which the scotch-irish belong. In doing this, it has not been his purpose to attempt even an outline sketch of the history of Scotland, but merely to condense and connect the record of its most important events, and indicate some of the principal writers upon different aspects of its history. The fact is, that the lack of acquaintance of many native-born Americans with the details of Scottish history is such that they require an elemen tary grounding even in the annals of its most noteworthy events. Such a primer the writer has undertaken to prepare. In doing so, he has found it advisable to compile, epitomize, and consolidate a number of the most compact of the sketches of Scottish history which have appeared in Great Britain, using for this purpose the writings of William F. Skene and of E. William Robertson, the Annals of Lord Hailes, the brief history of Mack intosh and, for the topographical and ethnographical description of Scot land of the present day, the works of the French geographer and traveller, J. J. E. Reclus, of which an edition in English has been published by Messrs. D. Appleton Company. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Scotch Irish Vol 2

Download or read book The Scotch Irish Vol 2 written by Charles A. Hanna and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scotch-Irish, Vol. 2: Or the Scot in North Britain, North Ireland, and North America To the thoughtful student of American history in its entirety, one of the I most interesting aspects of the subject comes from its consideration in connection with the part performed by the Scotch-Irish in helping to unite the thirteen original colonies. Although sometimes ignored, one important fact needs to be realized before we can properly estimate the forces and influences which operated to bring about and perpetuate this union. This fact, which relates peculiarly to the people whose genesis and development have now been passed in review is, that, prior to the Revolution, no other one people, of uniform race, customs, religion, and political principles, made such extensive settlements in so many of the thirteen American colonies as did the Scotch and Scotch-Irish. While it is true that New England, Pennsylvania, and Virginia were all originally settled by emigrants from different parte of England, yet the three English populations of those colonies probably differed more, one from another, in all things but a common language, than did the majority of them from the Scotch-Irish. In New England the English settlers were Puritans, individualists, and republicans - in principles the exact opposites of the English in Virginia and Carolina, who were Episcopalians, Royalists, and upholders of a slaveholding aristocracy. However, neither differed more from one another than both differed from the English of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, who were Quakers, persecuted in New England and Virginia alike, and themselves the only considerable body of English settlers in America who consistently followed their professions of religious tolerance. In Maryland, the English Cavaliers were of the Romish and Episcopal faiths, both practically united when it came to the question of driving Puritans and other dissenters from that colony. Indeed, the settlement of the English along the Atlantic seaboard in three widely separated colonies, under different laws, religions, and systems of government was chiefly due to the fact that their component elements were so radically different from and irreconcilable with one another, that at first they could not be combined.
