Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope and Method of Political Economy The nature of the topics discussed in the following pages is sufficiently indicated in the introductory chapter, and a lengthy preface is therefore unnecessary. The abstract discussion of methods may appear to some to have mainly an academic interest, since it does not directly extend our knowledge of economic phenomena. Whilst, however, we ought to be upon our guard against allowing any such discussion to obscure the greater importance of actual economic investigations, the subject is one to which all students of economics must necessarily give some attention in the course of their reading, and its indirect bearing on the solution of practical economic questions is very far indeed from being without importance. On Some Of The Precautions Requisite In The Use Of Statistics In Economic Reasonings. 1. Conditions of the reliability of statistical data.-- If arguments based on statistics are to be of any value, particular attention must be paid to the following points: (a) the sources from which the statistics are obtained, with special reference to their reliability; (6) their true meaning and significance; (c) their completeness or incompleteness as covering the whole range of the phenomena to which they relate; (d) the manner of their grouping, with special reference to the taking of averages. Each of these points may be briefly considered in turn1. The initial difficulty in the use of statistics is the possible inaccuracy of the original data. Statistics may be obtained and published officially, or they may be collected through private channels. Under the former of these conditions, the accuracy of the figures is sometimes practically unquestionable; as, for example, in the case of railway 1 In what follows I am specially indebted to Dr Giffen's Essays in Finance, First and Second Series; to papers on Statistics by Professor R. M. Smith in the Political Science Quarterly, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Publications of the American Economic Association; and to various papers in the Journal of the Statistical Society. traffic receipts. But this is by no means the universal rule, even when official statistics are forthcoming. Thus up to 1854 the values of imports into this country were calculated at the prices of the early part of the eighteenth century. From 1854 to 1870 they were officially computed according to the best information obtainable. At the present time the values of both imports and exports are...

Book Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Sydney John Chapman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Economy Political eoonomy is, and has been for some years, in a transitional state, which is proof of its vitality. On the one side it is becoming more abstract, and on the other side it is becoming more realistic. The two movements are not in the least Opposed, unless in the sense that they act and react on each other incessantly to the great advance ment of the study. Much modern Economic science is being increasingly assimilated in form and method to the Natural sciences. In chemical and physical labora tories which can pretend to any distinction realistic researching never stops; but speculation as regards the fundamentals of chemistry and physics continue and must continue. In the great laboratory of the world a multitude of realistic researches remain to be made by economists, and it is only as they are made that the science Of economics will develop satisfactorily; but to attack the ultra-abstract and mathematical economists on that account, in the supposed interests of realism, is suicidal. Of this book Speculative results of a very general kind are the substance. I have to thank Mr. A. Fingland Jack, Lecturer on Economics and Commerce in the University of Manchester for his kind assistance with the proofs. Book The Founders of Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Founders of Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Jan St. Lewinski and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Founders of Political Economy This little book is a result of studies which I have pursued since 1910, chiefly in the British Museum. The work was interrupted by the war, and I was only able to bring it to an end after the conclusion of peace. Unfortunately I was prevented from resuming after the war my investigations in London, so that as far as the beginnings of political economy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are concerned I could not go as deeply as I should have liked into the matter. I was obliged to base the first chapter of this book in the. First instance on reprints of early economic tracts which were obtainable in Warsaw. I have no intention of giving in the following pages a complete list of all theories which have been formulated since antiquity. My aim is a more modest - or perhaps a more ambitious - one. I have been endeavouring to find among the doctrines advanced more than one hundred years ago such theories as still to-day can help us to understand economic phenomena. Such - critical, and at the same time constructive - is the scope of this book. I have tried to separate the chaff from the corn and to put in evidence theories on which modern economic science can build. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Political Economy It sums up within itself the whole science of Political Economy. To settle it on truly scientific principles, to arrive at the true method of controlling it, demands the investigation and settlement of the mean ing of every single term in the science. Hume says, that the whole end of civil government is for the adminis tration of justice between man and man, so we may say, that the whole end of Political Economy is to regulate the currency. Book Dictionary of Political Economy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dictionary of Political Economy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Political Economy, Vol. 1 The stream of existence, if the simile may he permitted, reaches us deeply coloured by the soil of the fields through which it has flowed, by the varied strata of the cliffs - some of them undermined by it - that have bounded its long and devious course. Considerations of space have necessarily confined the scope of the work mainly to the developments of economic study in England, the United States, and our English-speaking colonies - and, in regard to these, an endeavour has been made to present under all the subjects treated an account of the beat and most recent authorities; whilst the opinions hold in other countries have also, as far as the required limits allowed, been considered and mentioned. The biographies introduced have been selected with the same end. They show what has actually been written in former times, and hence will enable the reader to trace the progress of economic thought. Much attention has been given to the less-known writers. It is difficult for the student under ordinary circumstances to trace out when such authors lived, the surroundings which influenced their lives, and the opinions they held. While the oversights in science are sometimes as remarkable as the discoveries, these earlier labourers have not unfrequently been the precursors of other and better-known men, and have sometimes anticipated opinions that have held sway for long periods after them. The different economic schools in the principal countries of the world are also described. Thus this volume contains notices of the American, Austrian, Dutch and English schools, and the French, German, Italian, and Spanish schools will follow in due course. A work extending over so wide a range of subjects is, necessarily, the production of many minds, of writers whose pursuits, occupations, and studies are very diverse and varied. I desire to record my warm thanks to the contributors to the book, which is, I think, in itself an almost unique example of economic cooperation. Where all have assisted so heartily, it is less easy to select individual names; but I wish to be allowed to express my special thanks to Professor Dunbar, Dr. Keynes, Professor Marshall, Professor Montague, Professor Nicholson, Signor M. Pantaleoni, Mr. L. R Phelps, Mr. L. L. Price, Mr. E. Schuster, Professor H. Sidgwick. and General Walker for valuable assistance in different directions, and particularly to Dr. Bonar, Professor Edgeworth, Mr. Henry Higgs, and Mr. H. R Tedder, who have kindly helped in the more arduous labour of the preparation of the work for the press. This is but an act of justice, that readers may know to whom they are specially indebted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Political Economy The two departments of sociology which have been most systematized are political economy or economics, and poli tics. Of these two, economics is the more capable of being systematized and is the more highly systematized - for reasons to be explained (p. The rest of sociology is as yet only imperfectly systematized. Much material has yet to be collected, and much Classification has yet to be attempted, before any considerable number of fruitful generalizations can be looked for. Economics, we have noticed, is differentiated from general sociology by the fact that the activities which primarily occupy its attention are those which have reference to wealth. Poli tics is distinguished similarly by the reference oi its data to government; but as some human action has reference at the same time to wealth and to government - public finance and factory legislation, for instance, being subjects which relate to both - economies and politics overlap to some extent. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working Principles of Political Economy in a New and Practical Form: A Book The aim of this book is to give, in small compass, a sufficient view of economic doctrine for the ordinary needs of intelligent citizens. I have had two principal motives in writing it. In the first place, I wished to show that the principles of Political Economy may be developed in such a form as to bring out, more clearly than is done in the standard books, their close and vital connection with every - day industry. In the second place, I wished to suggest some modifications, chiefly in points of detail, of the conclusions commonly accepted hitherto by the leading economists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Political Economy This book has been prepared for use in High Schools and Academies. In writing its pages, I have been Well aware that the object sought is the most difficult at which an economist can aim. Whether this effort to reach the minds of pupils of fifteen, sixteen or seventeen years has been successful, will only be learned on actual trial. In preparing a text-book for students in the period of life indicated, I have not thought it necessary to make the work childish. It is no Primer of Political Economy which is here offered but a substantial course of study in this vitally important subject. I can only hope that it will be found that those for whom it has been designed will be able to follow that course to their own satisfaction and with good results. With unabated bounty the land of England blooms and grows; waving with yellow harvests; thick-studded with workshops, industrial implements, with fifteen millions of workers, understood to be the strongest, the cunningest, and the willingest our earth ever had; these men are here, the work they have done, the fruit they have realised is here, abundant, exuberant on every hand of us; and behold some baleful fiat as of Enchantment has gone forth, saying, 'Touch it not, ye master-workers, ye master-idlers;none of you can touch it, no man of you shall be the better for it; this is enchanted fruit.'" - Thomas Carlyle (Past and Present).
