Book excerpt: “Brilliant plotting, relentless suspense,” raved the Washington Post. “A new synonym for terror,” crowned the Detroit Free Press. The critics agree: no one writes suspense like Karin Slaughter, whose thrillers featuring medical examiner Sara Linton and her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, have propelled her to the top of bestseller lists the world over. Now Slaughter fuses her unmatched grasp of forensic science and a mastery of complex relationships in a riveting tale of faith, doubt, and murder. The victim was buried alive in the Georgia woods—then killed in a horrifying fashion. When Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver stumble upon the body, both become consumed with finding out who killed the pretty, impeccably dressed young woman. And for Sara and Jeffrey, a harrowing journey begins, one that will test their own turbulent relationship and draw dozens of lives into the case. Lena Adams is one of them. A Grant County detective for years, she has her own reasons for being drawn to this case and a fierce drive to see justice done. For these three people, who have each seen the darkest side of human nature, the body of the murdered girl is but the first in a series of shocking and sordid revelations. Now, as Jeffrey and Sara narrow the field of suspects, they must confront their own doubts and indiscretions, while Lena Adams sees herself reflected in the frightened eyes of a battered woman who may be the key figure in the case. As Faithless builds to a stunning and unforgettable climax, Karin Slaughter masterfully brings together strands of interlocking lives, family secrets, and hidden passions with one astounding truth: the identity of a killer who is more evil and dangerous than anyone could have guessed. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Karin Slaughter's Unseen.

Download or read book Pol tica written by Phillip B. Gonzales and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-10 with total page 1079 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Política offers a stunning revisionist understanding of the early political incorporation of Mexican-origin peoples into the U.S. body politic in the nineteenth century. Historical sociologist Phillip B. Gonzales reexamines the fundamental issue in New Mexico’s history, namely, the dramatic shift in national identities initiated by Nuevomexicanos when their province became ruled by the United States. Gonzales provides an insightful, rigorous, and controversial interpretation of how Nuevomexicano political competition was woven into the Democratic and Republican two-party system that emerged in the United States between the 1850s and 1912, when New Mexico became a state. Drawing on newly discovered archival and primary sources, he explores how Nuevomexicanos relied on a long tradition of political engagement and a preexisting republican disposition and practice to elaborate a dual-party political system mirroring the contours of U.S. national politics. Política is a tour de force of political history in the nineteenth-century U.S.–Mexico borderlands that reinterprets colonization, reconstructs Euro-American and Nuevomexicano relations, and recasts the prevailing historical narrative of territorial expansion and incorporation in North American imperial history. Gonzales provides critical insights into several discrete historical processes, such as U.S. racialization and citizenship, integration and marginalization, accommodation and resistance, internal colonialism, and the long struggle for political inclusion in the borderlands, shedding light on debates taking place today over Latinos and U.S. citizenship.

Download or read book Sheridan and Grant County written by Roy L. Wilson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land fever delivered people to the Sheridan area as the first settlers' idea of progress meant acquiring and improving land. In the 1820s, Pulaski and Clark Counties governed the area, followed by Saline, Hot Spring, and Jefferson Counties, until 1869 when Sheridan and Grant County were Reconstruction-mandated and named to honor Union generals. In the 1830s, the Little Rock to Monticello stagecoach road extended through the Orion community southward near Darysaw Creek. The Little Rock to Camden stagecoach road, propelled into history by the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry during the Civil War, ran through the Belfast community down the ridge between Lost Creek and Polk Creek southward across the Saline River. The Civil War and its traumatic aftermath delayed progress for almost a century. The Great Depression and World War II were bitter setbacks. During those years, farmland started four blocks north of the courthouse. For most people, logging and growing cotton provided income until non-sawmill industries arrived in the late 1950s. Readers of Sheridan and Grant County will contemplate lives filled with suffering, as well as joy, evoked by this collection of amazing images of the area's history.
Download or read book Advising Chiang s Army written by Stephen L. Wilson and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Phil Saunders was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1942. After receiving further training at Fort Benning and serving as a training officer at Camp Wheeler, he was assigned as a combat liaison officer with Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist army in China. He arrived in the China-Burma-India theater in the fall of 1943 and soon discovered the Chinese soldiers were underfed, underpaid, unprepared for combat, and reluctant to engage the Japanese. 'Advising Chiang's Army' details Phil's two years spent in China and describes how the troops he worked with gradually became an effective fighting force, shifted from defensive to offensive combat, and ultimately defeated the enemy. The book also recounts his post-war career in state politics and with the National Labor Relations Board."--Back cover.
