Arundell argues that traditions, conventions, and established practices play an essential role in scientific inquiry and discovery, and that too much emphasis on novelty and innovation can lead to epistemic and practical problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Value of Tradition: A Correspondence Between Lord Arundell of Wardour and Mr. E. Ryley; With a Letter From the Rev. H. Formby on the Christian Science of Tradition In the circumstances of the correspondence a certain resemblance will be detected to another correspondence published during the past year, under the title of Proteus and Amadeus.' This resemblance may possibly give rise to the impression that the present correspondence was suggested by the former. This really was not the case, as a comparison of dates will show. I feel bound to add, so far as I am personally concerned, that I suggest no resemblance in respect of the charm and elegance of style. Moreover, the former are written from a different point of view. Book When Tradition Turns Into Innovation

Download or read book When Tradition Turns Into Innovation written by Antonio Petruzzelli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from the increasing difficulties firms face to create new value for customers and achieve competitive advantage, this book proposes an innovative strategy to sustain innovation at the product level, based on the notion of tradition. Specifically, the authors argue that firms may successfully innovate, exploiting the whole set of competencies, knowledge, values and culture that characterize a specific firm, territory, and/or age. Analyzing several international case studies, this book clearly shows how tradition may be effectively used, allowing companies to create successful new products and how to profit from them. The book tackles the main issues and problems of a tradition-based innovation approach, tracing the patterns of how old and new knowledge can be combined. Proposes a new strategic model for promoting and sustaining innovation at product level Merges a theoretical perspective with actual cases Develops a set of implications that allows managers and practitioners to implement an alternative approach to innovation

Book Science Religion and the Protestant Tradition

Download or read book Science Religion and the Protestant Tradition written by James C. Ungureanu and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the “conflict thesis” between science and religion—the notion of perennial conflict or warfare between the two—is part of our modern self-understanding. As the story goes, John William Draper (1811–1882) and Andrew Dickson White (1832–1918) constructed dramatic narratives in the nineteenth century that cast religion as the relentless enemy of scientific progress. And yet, despite its resilience in popular culture, historians today have largely debunked the conflict thesis. Unravelling its origins, James Ungureanu argues that Draper and White actually hoped their narratives would preserve religious belief. For them, science was ultimately a scapegoat for a much larger and more important argument dating back to the Protestant Reformation, where one theological tradition was pitted against another—a more progressive, liberal, and diffusive Christianity against a more traditional, conservative, and orthodox Christianity. By the mid-nineteenth century, narratives of conflict between “science and religion” were largely deployed between contending theological schools of thought. However, these narratives were later appropriated by secularists, freethinkers, and atheists as weapons against all religion. By revisiting its origins, development, and popularization, Ungureanu ultimately reveals that the “conflict thesis” was just one of the many unintended consequences of the Protestant Reformation.
