Book The Scientific Spirit and Social Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Scientific Spirit and Social Work Classic Reprint written by Arthur James Todd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Spirit and Social Work Three facts have conspired to overcome a natural hesitation to commit the enormity of another book in these disturbed times: First, the exigencies of social reconstruction demand that some threads of policy be offered to those who grope through the labyrinth. Second, the unparalleled official recognition of social work by the government - by President Wilson, Secretary Baker, Secretary Daniels, Secretary Lane, the governors of various States, and others - puts social workers, new and old, upon their mettle. The very proposals of statesmanlike social workers which were formerly stigmatized as visionary, revolutionary, or immoral are now embraced wholesale as the social creed which alone can save a country in its hour of crisis. Hence, social workers must practice the humility and modesty of science; they must also make good and justify by their works the new faith placed in them. This means a constant effort to refresh their own mental outfit and to improve their equipment by every possible means. Third, the enormous war-time extension of various forms of social-welfare activity has called into service hundreds and even thousands of men and women, some of them only partly trained, many of them utterly untrained. Whether they elect to seek professional training or whether they enlist only as volunteers and amateurs, if they are to become permanent assets instead of liabilities to scientific social work they must somehow or other get the scientific and professional attitude toward their work. Now a profession is distinguished from a trade by several marks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Society The propriety of the use of the term Science in such a connection may be questioned by some whom habit has accustomed to apply that term to a much lower range of investigations. If researches into the habits of beetles and tadpoles, and their localities and conditions of exist ence, are entitled to the dignified appellation of Science, certainly similar researches into the nature, the wants, the adaptations, and, so to speak, into the true or requisite moral and social habitat of the spiritual animal called Man must be, if conducted according to the rigid methods of scientific induction from observed facts, equally entitled to that distinction. Book Problems in American Society

Download or read book Problems in American Society written by Joseph Henry Crooker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in American Society: Some Social Studies Let the light Shine into every nook and comer, and let every piece be tested; for, if there is anything out of order, it is high time that it be mended, and, if there is anything which has become obsolete, it is high time that it be cast aside for something better. Criticism will lead in creativeness, and after wild vagaries will come the saner mood. Vast improvements in the form and content of human life will result from this free and intense application of thought to all these questions of poverty, crime, education, economics, and religious co-operation. It is only by such discussion that we can hope to reach modes of life, individual and corporate, on a level with our intelligence. And one of the most hopeful indications of the hour is this growing interest in all matters which pertain to the problem of living. The social impulse which seeks to put a truth to divine uses is as necessary as the scientific spirit which seeks to discover that truth. Book The Social Life of Spirits

Download or read book The Social Life of Spirits written by Ruy Blanes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirits can be haunters, informants, possessors, and transformers of the living, but more than anything anthropologists have understood them as representations of something else—symbols that articulate facets of human experience in much the same way works of art do. The Social Life of Spirits challenges this notion. By stripping symbolism from the way we think about the spirit world, the contributors of this book uncover a livelier, more diverse environment of entities—with their own histories, motivations, and social interactions—providing a new understanding of spirits not as symbols, but as agents. The contributors tour the spiritual globe—the globe of nonthings—in essays on topics ranging from the Holy Ghost in southern Africa to spirits of the “people of the streets” in Rio de Janeiro to dragons and magic in Britain. Avoiding a reliance on religion and belief systems to explain the significance of spirits, they reimagine spirits in a rich network of social trajectories, ultimately arguing for a new ontological ground upon which to examine the intangible world and its interactions with the tangible one.
