It is hoped that by so doing errors of fact have been in a measure eliminated; the final responsibility, however, lies with the author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organic Evolution Considered I have not given in detail all of the arguments which have been presented in support of the theory of organic evolution, for this would be a super uous work in view of the fact that this has been most fully and ably done by Darwin and other writers. My endeavor has been to urge more in detail some of the objections to the theory than has been done by others. The evolutionist may be a Theist, an Atheist, an Agnostic, a Pantheist, or a Materialist. To my mind it is not a matter of indifference as to which of these he is. I look upon the theory of evolution as being of no importance except as it involves the well-being of man. My object in what I have written is to promote the belief in Theism and in the existence of a Spiritual nature in man which Theism alone can explain. TO Darwin we are indebted for a lasting demonstration of the method of scientific procedure, and for the first extensive attempt to analyze the factors involved in organic evolution. To Darwin, also, is due the credit for the first comprehensive and acceptable attempt to explain the manner of the origin Of species. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Evolution: Its Basis and Its Scope The present volume consists of a series of eight addresses delivered as the Hewitt Lectures of Columbia University at Cooper Union in New York City during the months of February and March, 1907. The purpose of these lectures was to describe in concise outline the Doctrine of Evolution, its basis in the facts of natural history, and its wide and universal scope. They fall naturally into two groups. Those of the first part deal with matters of definition, with the essential character istics of living things, and, at greater length, with the evidences of organic evolution. The lectures of the second group take up the various aspects of human evolution as a special instance of the general organic process. In this latter part of the series, the subject of physical evolution is first considered, and this is followed by an analysis of human mental evolution; the chapter on social evolution extends the funda mental principles to a field which is not usually con sidered by biologists, and its purpose is to demonstrate the efficiency of the genetic method in this department as in all others; finally, the principles are extended to what is called the higher human life, the realm, namely, of ethical, religious, and theological ideas and ideals. Book The Primary Factors of Organic Evolution

Download or read book The Primary Factors of Organic Evolution written by E. D. Cope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primary Factors of Organic Evolution The present book is an attempt to select from the mass of facts accumulated by biologist, those which, in the author's opinion, throw a clear light on the problem of organic evolution, and especially that of the animal kingdom. As the actual lines of descent can be finally demonstrated chiefly from paleontologic research, I have drawn a large part of my evidence from this source. Of course, the restriction imposed by limited space has compelled the omission of a great many facts which have an important bearing on the problem. I have preferred the paleontologic evidence for another reason. Darwin and the writers of his immediate school have drawn most of their evidence from facts which are embraced in the science of œcology. Weismann and writers of his type draw most of their evidence from the facts of embryology. The mass of facts recently brought to light in the field of paleontology, especially in the United States, remained to be presented, and the evidence they contain interwoven with that derived from the sources mentioned. Many of the zoologists of this country, in common with many of those of other nations, have found reason for believing that the factors of evolution which were first clearly formulated by Lamarck, are really such. This view is taken in the following pages, and the book may be regarded as containing a plea on their behalf. In other words, the argument is constructive and not destructive. The attempt is made to show what we know, rather than what we do not know. This is proper at this time, since, in my opinion, a certain amount of evidence has accumulated to demonstrate the doctrine here defended, and which I have defended as a working hypothesis for twenty-five years. Book Plant Genetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Genetics Classic Reprint written by John M. Coulte and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Genetics It should be realized that genetics is a natural out growth from the study of organic evolution. The con ception of evolution began as a speculation, but became scientific in connection with the work of lamarck and darwin. In such work the method used was that of Observation and inference. Facts were observed and an explanation was devised that would relate them. Resemblances and differences among species were noted, and it was inferred that these indicated degrees of relationship. It was assumed that closely related species must have had a comparatively recent common ancestry and that more distantly related species must have had a more remote common ancestry. Through comparisons of structure and of geographical distribution systems of phylogeny have been inferred, and an outline of the evolution of the plant and animal kingdoms has been the result. All of these conclusions are based upon comparison and inference. This method reached its extreme application in the work of darwin, whose observations included a range of forms and an extent of time unequaled by any pre ceding student oi evolution. It may be said that in darwin's work the method of comparison and infer ence reached the limit of its possibilities. The students of evolution were chiefly concerned With explaining the Changes that resulted in phylogeny. In other words. Book The Physical Basis of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Physical Basis of Life Classic Reprint written by Edmund Beecher Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Basis of Life It is not surprising that such pronouncements should have had a hostile reception fifty years ago. Even in this twentieth century some of our non - scientific friends somehow manage to find a source of heat and fury in so evident a fact as organic evolution. On the whole, how ever, sane and well-informed persons do not now seem to find either their morals or their happiness seriously affected by elementary and fundamental facts concerning living things. Today Huxley 's heresy of sixty years ago has become an orthodox platitude; but the problems of protoplasm still hold us fast with a gripping interest that has lost nothing of its force With the flight of time. In what light do Huxley 's conclusions appear after the bio logical progress of half a century? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
