Book The Science of Etymology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Science of Etymology Classic Reprint written by Walter W. Skeat and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Etymology The object of the present volume is to draw attention to some of the principles that should guide the student of etymology in general, and of English etymology particularly; in order that any one who employs an etymological dictionary may be able to do so with some degree of intelligence and to some profit. It is much easier to accomplish this at the present date than it was some ten or twenty years ago. The steady progress of the New English Dictionary furnishes us with innumerable and indisputable instances of the actual usages of English words, so that the mistakes which formerly arose from a very imperfect knowledge of their history have largely been corrected, and much that was once obscure has been made plain. Meanwhile, the great gains that have resulted from the scientific study of comparative philology as applied to the Indo-germanic languages have been properly formulated and tabulated, to the explosion and exclusion of many hasty inferences that were both misleading and mischievous. It is now possible to introduce science where once there was little but guesswork. Such science is founded, as all science should be, upon the careful observation of the effects of well-ascertained laws, which have been laboriously evolved from the comparison of innumerable forms of words in many languages. A large number of such laws can now be positively and safely relied upon, because they rest upon the sure foundations of a careful study of phonetics. This study enables us to concern ourselves with something that is far more valuable than written forms, viz. the actual sounds which the symbols employed in various languages actually represent. Book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint written by Walter W. Skeat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of English Etymology The present volume is intended to serve as a help to the student of English etymology. In my Etymological Dictionary, the numerous examples of similar letter - changes are invariably separated from each other, by the necessity for adhering to the alphabetical order. It is therefore advisable to re-arrange the results so as to shew what words should be under consideration at the same time. It is only by a com parison of this character that the various phonetic laws can be properly observed and tested. I have found it advisable to follow the example of Mr. Sweet, in his History of English Sounds, and to consider what may be called the 'native element' of our language apart from the Romance or imported element. Hence I have purposely excluded all words of French origin from the present investigation. A few French words are quoted here and there by way of illustration, but no inferences are here drawn from the results which their history furnishes. If the present volume should meet with approval, I propose to issue another volume, to be entitled 'second Series, ' Which will deal particularly, and almost exclusively, with the words which have been imported into English from French, as well as from Latin, Greek, and other languages (except Teutonic and Celtic) af/er the N orman Conquest. Book Exercises on Etymology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exercises on Etymology Classic Reprint written by William Graham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises on Etymology The English tongue presents so great a variety of elements, that the study of its Etymology affords an acquaintance with many other languages, tending to familiarise the student not only with modern German - one branch of the same Teutonic family as that to which English belongs - but also with Greek and Latin - and with French, Spanish, and Italian, which the dead languages originally helped to form. Many efforts have been successfully made of late to render the access to Latin and Greek inviting to the pupil, by a knowledge of Latin roots existing in English words; but as yet little has been done in school-books to make the existence of Teutonic words in our language available for ascertaining the roots of Saxon-English words, and for familiarising the memory with the kindred words of the modern German. This want is attempted to be supplied in the present volume. But Etymology should have higher aims. It should exhibit the roots of a language which has long since ceased to be spoken; and, connecting these with those of other vanished tongues, lead to the recognition of a language the common parent of many others, and to the confirmation of the truth of one primitive language. Etymology should also point out the similar character of all lingual changes - a similarity arising from the common nature of man. These subjects have occupied the attention of eminent modern philologists; and in few departments of science or literature have such instructive discoveries been lately made as in those which concern the transmigration of languages. The Exercises and Extracts in this volume, therefore, have been so arranged, as to lay the basis of such habits of inquiry as will lead the learner into the right track of general, as well as of philological, investigation. Book A Manual of Etymology

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Etymology: Containing Latin and Greek Derivatives, With a Key, Giving the Prefix, Root, and Suffix The Manual of Etymology has been prepared in response to a demand for an advanced work, based on the same principles and presenting the same features as the Model Etymology. The work is progressive, and is specially adapted to use in the class-room. Commencing with affixes, it carries the pupil, by easy gradations, through the Latin derivatives, each word being illustrated by a sentence containing some historical, scientific, or interesting fact. In preparing Part III., which treats of Greek roots and derivatives, it has been the aim of the author to remove those obstacles which long experience in teaching has shown to exist. Each division of the subject ends with a Review. The Key Is a valuable feature of the work. It analyzes every word about which a doubt could arise, and gives not only the prefix and root, but also that most difficult part, the suffix. Book The Oxford Guide to Etymology

Download or read book The Oxford Guide to Etymology written by Philip Durkin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical introduction to word history investigates every aspect of where words come from and how they change. Philip Durkin, chief etymologist of the Oxford English Dictionary, shows how different types of evidence can shed light on the myriad ways in which words change in form and meaning. He considers how such changes can be part of wider linguistic processes, or be influenced by a complex mixture of social and cultural factors. He illustrates every point with a wide range of fascinating examples. Dr Durkin investigates folk etymology and other changes which words undergo in everyday use. He shows how language families are established, how words in different languages can have a common ancester, and the ways in which the latter can be distinguished from words introduced through language contact. He examines the etymologies of the names of people and places. His focus is on English but he draws many examples from languages such as French, German, and Latin which cast light on the pre-histories of English words. The Oxford Guide to Etymology is reliable, readable, instructive, and enjoyable. Everyone interested in the history of words will value this account of an endlessly fascinating subject.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Words A long and somewhat varied experience in language teaching has convinced me that there are still, in spite of the march of science, many people who are capable Of getting intellectual pleasure from word-history. I hope that to such people this little book, the amusement Of occasional leisure, will not be unwelcome. It differs, I believe, from any other popular book on language in that it deals essentially with the origins of words, and makes no attempt to enforce a moral. My aim has been to select especially the unexpected in etymology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, deluxe hardcover edition of one of the most important scientific works ever written In December 1831, Charles Darwin boarded the HMS Beagle, accompanying her crew on a five-year journey that crossed the Atlantic Ocean to survey the coasts of South America. As the expedition’s geologist and naturalist, Darwin collected evidence from the Galapagos Islands and other locations which prompted him to speculate that species evolve over generations through a process of natural selection. In 1859, Darwin published On the Origin of Species, a work of scientific literature considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. His revolutionary work presented evidence from the Beagle expedition as well as from years of subsequent research and experimentation. Written for non-specialists, Darwin’s book gained widespread interest from the scientific community, religious leaders, politicians and the general public. The theory Darwin presented in his book quickly became the subject of heated debate and discussion. Now accepted by the scientific community, Darwin’s concepts of evolutionary adaptation via natural selection are central to modern evolutionary theory and form the foundation of modern life sciences. Perhaps the most transformative scientific volume ever published, this volume of the first edition of On the Origin of Species: Outlines Darwin’s ideas, scientific influences and the core of his theory Details natural selection and address possible objections to the theory Examines the fossil record and biogeography to support evolutionary adaptation Features a "Recapitulation and Conclusion" which reviews key concepts and considers the future relevance of Darwin’s theory On the Origin of Species: The Science Classic is an important addition to the bestselling Capstone Classics series edited by Tom Butler-Bowdon. It includes an insightful Introduction from leading Darwin scholar Dr John van Wyhe of the University of Singapore, which presents new research and an offers an original perspective on Darwin and his famous work. This high-quality, hardcover volume is a must-have for readers interested in science and scientific literature, particularly evolutionary theory and life sciences.
