Download or read book The Science of Ethics Vol 1 written by Michael Cronin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics, Vol. 1: General Ethics Of modern Scholastic writers the author is most in debted to Professors Meyer and Cathrein, to Rev. Joseph Rickaby, Taparelli, Schififini, and Rev. Dr. Walter mcdonald, Maynooth College, whose treatises on Ethics have been of immense help to him in the preparation of his work. His most grateful thanks are due to the Rev. John Waters, b.a., of Clonliffe College, for his kindness in reading this book, and for very many valuable criticisms and suggestions. Father Waters' wide and minute acquaintance with the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas was always at the author's disposal in the difficult task of discovering and comparing the various references made by St. Thomas to any special Ethical question, references often occurring in places very wide apart, and under unpromising titles - titles apparently outside the, subject under discussion. Thanks are also due to those gentlemen who so kindly undertook the tedious and un interesting task of proof-reading, and to many others also for help given of various kinds. Book The Science of Ethics

Download or read book The Science of Ethics written by Michael Cronin and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics, Vol. 1 The main purpose of this work on Ethics is to present to students of Moral Science a full and connected account of the ethical system of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. To this system the author gives his fullest assent and adherence, an adherence which is no mere blind acceptance of a tradition, but comes of a conviction which has grown stronger and clearer with time and study, that the general principles on which Aristotle builds furnish a thoroughly sound basis of moral enquiry, and that his method is such as to ensure continued development in accordance with the most rigid requirements of science. For Ethics is nothing more than a study of natural law, i.e. the natural needs of man and the means of satisfying them, and the method employed by Aristotle is the direct determination of those needs by an empirical examination of our human constitution, our faculties and their essential functions and objects. Every natural normative science proceeds in this manner. Physiology determines the needs of the body by an examination of the organs, their functions and ends. Medicine supplies the means necessary for meeting these needs. And not only the determination of our personal, but of our social necessities also, depends upon the same method. The natural welfare of the human race is found always in development within the range of our natural capacities and their essential objects. Book Moral Psychology Volume 4

Download or read book Moral Psychology Volume 4 written by Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists address issues of moral responsibility and free will, drawing on new findings from empirical science. Traditional philosophers approached the issues of free will and moral responsibility through conceptual analysis that seldom incorporated findings from empirical science. In recent decades, however, striking developments in psychology and neuroscience have captured the attention of many moral philosophers. This volume of Moral Psychology offers essays, commentaries, and replies by leading philosophers and scientists who explain and use empirical findings from psychology and neuroscience to illuminate old and new problems regarding free will and moral responsibility. The contributors—who include such prominent scholars as Patricia Churchland, Daniel Dennett, and Michael Gazzaniga—consider issues raised by determinism, compatibilism, and libertarianism; epiphenomenalism, bypassing, and naturalism; naturalism; and rationality and situationism. These writings show that although science does not settle the issues of free will and moral responsibility, it has enlivened the field by asking novel, profound, and important questions.
