Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Technology Resources of Japan: A Comparison With the United States Much quantitative information is available on Ia pan's scientific research and experimental development. While most data for the United States and Japan are directly comparable, there are some definitional differ ences in particular statistical series; in such cases, em phasis is placed on each country' s trends rather than on absolute values. Appendix A, Technical Notes, details such differences and any adjustments that were made to the Japanese or US data to make them more com parable. Another comparative problem arises when Japanese expenditures are converted into US dollars. Yen-dollar market exchange rates have become rather volatile, re ecting dynamics that are increasingly independent of the relative purchasing power of the currencies. To avoid the distortions that arise froi'n market exchange rate con versions, purchasing power parities calculated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Develop ment are used to convert yen to dollars. Additionally, gnp implicit price deflators are used to convert current dollars into constant 1982 dollars in order to provide time series data that re ect real, rather than nominal, trends in expenditures. A brief discussion of purchasing power parities is included in appendix A. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Science Technology and Society in Postwar Japan

Download or read book Science Technology and Society in Postwar Japan written by Shigeru Nakayama and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991. The study of Japanese science and technology (especially technology) is a fashionable subject at the present time, and numerous English language works appear month by month claiming to explain the 'miracle' of the recent rise of Japanese technology. Most of these works are, however, seem to be superficial treatments of Japan's recent technological performance, lacking in historical insight. This book is an attempt to introduce a critical examination of the mechanisms by which Japan has promoted science and technology by looking at its post-war historical development.

Book 21st Century Innovation Systems for Japan and the United States

Download or read book 21st Century Innovation Systems for Japan and the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing that a capacity to innovate and commercialize new high-technology products is increasingly a key for the economic growth in the environment of tighter environmental and resource constraints, governments around the world have taken active steps to strengthen their national innovation systems. These steps underscore the belief of these governments that the rising costs and risks associated with new potentially high-payoff technologies, their spillover or externality-generating effects and the growing global competition, require national R&D programs to support the innovations by new and existing high-technology firms within their borders. The National Research Council's Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) has embarked on a study of selected foreign innovation programs in comparison with major U.S. programs. The "21st Century Innovation Systems for the United States and Japan: Lessons from a Decade of Change" symposium reviewed government programs and initiatives to support the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises, government-university- industry collaboration and consortia, and the impact of the intellectual property regime on innovation. This book brings together the papers presented at the conference and provides a historical context of the issues discussed at the symposium.

Book University Industry R D Collaboration in the United States the United Kingdom and Japan

Download or read book University Industry R D Collaboration in the United States the United Kingdom and Japan written by D. Rahm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last several decades there has been a growing interest in Research & Development (R&D) policy. This is particularly so in advanced industrialized nations that have adopted science- and technology- based strategies for national economic competitiveness. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan -- the three nations that are the subjects of this book -- share this policy strategy. Each of these nations is committed to hamessing the innovations that stern from scientific and technological advance to promote national economic prosperity. Governments can influence their nation's R&D efIort in three general ways. First, they can directly fund the R&D efIort through grants, loans, appropriations, or government contracts. Second, they can provide tax and financing incentives to encourage higher levels of private sector R&D. Third, they can use their power to create inter-organizational collaborations that vastly extend and expand the nation's collective R&D efIort. University-industry collaborations are a principal type of these inter organizational R&D efIorts -- and the focus of this book.
