Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schuyler Mansion at Albany: Residence of Major-General Philip Schuyler, 1762-1804 It was a pleasing sight that met the eye of Philip Schuyler, as he approached Albany in the packet sloop that brought him from New York, upon his return from England, in 1762. A large, new house of yellow brick, substantially built, stood on the slope above the high river bank, about half a mile south of the city. It commanded a fine view of the Hudson, beautiful in those old days with its green shores sloping to the water's edge, its willow fringed islands lying out in the stream. Promontories crowned with noble trees extended into the water; on the pebbly beaches adjoining them the tides plashed and rippled, and in every direction the white sails of the passing boats gave life and animation to the scene. The house, named "The Pastures," has been described as "a landmark for many years, until the town grew up about it; - a hospitable house, for which travelers looked as they ascended the river, and which still stands in perfect preservation, as a testimony to the architectural taste and good workmanship of the time." As the author reminds us, the Dutch understood themselves to be republican, urban, mobile, mercantile, and amphibious; in short, properly Dutch. She shows how the Dutch possessed the land, traded over it, surrendered it to the English, and then lived out their lives balancing a "gaze" that the conquerors had for land against their own.

This book was released on 2012-01-23 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the winter of 1776, in one of the most amazing logistical feats of the Revolutionary War, Henry Knox and his teamsters transported cannons from Fort Ticonderoga through the sparsely populated Berkshires to Boston to help drive British forces from the city. This history documents Knox's precise route--dubbed the Henry Knox Trail--and chronicles the evolution of an ordinary Indian path into a fur corridor, a settlement trail, and eventually a war road. By recounting the growth of this important but under appreciated thoroughfare, this study offers critical insight into a vital Revolutionary supply route.

Book From the Battlefield to the Stage

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known today chiefly for his surrender to the American forces at Saratoga, New York, in 1777, General John Burgoyne was one of the most interesting – and extraordinary – figures of the eighteenth century. In From the Battlefield to the Stage Norman Poser provides a rounded biography, covering not only the Saratoga campaign but also elements of Burgoyne’s eventful life that have never been adequately explored. At the age of twenty-eight, Burgoyne eloped with Charlotte Stanley, the daughter of the immensely wealthy and influential Earl of Derby. Though initially furious, the earl, convinced of the young officer’s good character, eventually forgave the couple, and the Stanley family became a major influence in Burgoyne’s life and career. He was a socialite, welcome in London’s fashionable drawing rooms, a high-stakes gambler in its elite clubs, and a playwright whose social comedies were successfully performed on the London stage. As a member of Parliament for thirty years, Burgoyne supported the rule of law, fought the corruption of the East India Company, and advocated religious tolerance. From the Battlefield to the Stage paints a vivid portrait of General John Burgoyne, remembering him not only for his role in one of Britain’s worst military disasters but also as a brave, talented, humane man.
