Book Scott s Shadow

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ian Duncan
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2016-08-02
  • ISBN : 0691144265
  • Pages : 407 pages

Download or read book Scott s Shadow written by Ian Duncan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scott's Shadow is the first comprehensive account of the flowering of Scottish fiction between 1802 and 1832, when post-Enlightenment Edinburgh rivaled London as a center for literary and cultural innovation. Ian Duncan shows how Walter Scott became the central figure in these developments, and how he helped redefine the novel as the principal modern genre for the representation of national historical life. Duncan traces the rise of a cultural nationalist ideology and the ascendancy of Scott's Waverley novels in the years after Waterloo. He argues that the key to Scott's achievement and its unprecedented impact was the actualization of a realist aesthetic of fiction, one that offered a socializing model of the imagination as first theorized by Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume. This aesthetic, Duncan contends, provides a powerful novelistic alternative to the Kantian-Coleridgean account of the imagination that has been taken as normative for British Romanticism since the early twentieth century. Duncan goes on to examine in detail how other Scottish writers inspired by Scott's innovations--James Hogg and John Galt in particular--produced in their own novels and tales rival accounts of regional, national, and imperial history. Scott's Shadow illuminates a major but neglected episode of British Romanticism as well as a pivotal moment in the history and development of the novel.

Book The Novels of Walter Scott and his Literary Relations

Download or read book The Novels of Walter Scott and his Literary Relations written by A. Monnickendam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a wealth of diverse source material this book comprises an innovative critical study which, for the first time, examines Scott through the filter of his female contemporaries. It not only provides thought-provoking ideas about their handling of, for example, the love-plot, but also produces a different, more sombre Scott.

Book Looking In Looking Out Jews and Non Jews in Mutual Contemplation

Download or read book Looking In Looking Out Jews and Non Jews in Mutual Contemplation written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-04-08 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Goodman’s forty years of scholarship in Roman history and ancient Judaism demonstrates how each discipline illuminates the other: Jewish history makes best sense in a broader Greco-Roman context; Roman history has much to learn from Jewish sources and evidence. In this volume, Martin’s colleagues and students follow his example by examining Jews and non-Jews in mutual contemplation. Part 1 explores Jews’ views of inter-communal stasis, the causes of the Bar Kochba revolt, tales of Herodian intrigue, and the meaning of “Israel.” Part 2 investigates Jews depiction of outsiders: Moabites, Greeks, Arabs, and Roman authorities. Part 3 explores early Christians’ (Luke, Jerome, Rufinus, Syriac poetry, Pionius, ordinary individuals) views of Jews and use of Jewish sources, and Josephus’s relevance for girls in 19th century Britain.

Book The British Publishing Industry in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book The British Publishing Industry in the Nineteenth Century written by David Finkelstein and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-14 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents how the nineteenth-century British publishing industry responded to and helped shape changes in readership and reading markets in the period. Focusing on broad social, economic and cultural changes, it traces the impact of improvements in transport and communication networks, which dramatically affected the production, distribution and retail of books and periodicals, and the implementation of the Education Acts of 1870 and 1871 which forced publishers to direct their attention to new markets and adopt cheaper publishing formats. The growth of circulating libraries, the revolution in serial and part publication, and the spread of railway bookstalls are among the many topics addressed in this volume which concludes with a section that documents the new pressures of censorship that arose as educational reforms provoked anxieties over the spread of cheap ‘pernicious’ literature.
