In the early period this use of dramatic works for pedagogical purposes was probably an unconscious method of teaching; at its height it was clearly recognized as a means to an end; while today the educational value of our school dramatics is largely neglected, and, in practice, the School Drama hardly exists. In theory, many today urge its use; this study may suggest an historical basis for their recommendation. Although most in uential during the sixteenth and seventeenth cen taries, evidences of the pedagogical use of the drama can be found throughout nearly all the history of education. Its chief activity and most loyal supporters were found in England and Germany, but many other countries of Europe made some use of it. The reason for its existence changed as educational methods advanced; its aims were diverse and changing. In addition to its educational importance, it was in uential in the dramatic history of England and Germany, and the Elizabethan drama owes it a decided debt. This study is the result of the suggestion and inspiration of Professor Paul Monroe, of Teachers Colleges to whom, were it worthier, it would be dedicated. The author is also indebted to Professor Ashley H. Thorndike and Librarian William D. Johnston, of Columbia, to Professors Chauncey B. Tinker and William Lyon Phelps, of Yale, who first awoke a desire for further study in English, to President William DeWitt Hyde, of Bowdoin, whose kindness made possible the absence from the Bowdoin Faculty during which the study was begun, and to numerous fellow students and colleagues. The author is, doubtless, more conscious than the reader, of the faults and incompleteness of this study. Although many fields of English Literature have been studied exhaustively, almost nothing has been written in English upon the School Drama. Further study is needed, in particular, upon the relations between the boy companies and the School Drama, the educational aspect of the University Plays, the Prodigal Son theme in English dramas and the English plays of student life; the author hopes later to do more work on these, and similar topics; he welcomes other investigators in this untrodden field. Meanwhile, this study is presented as an introduction to the whole topic.

Book excerpt: Dramatic performances at the universities in early modern England have usually been regarded as insular events, completely removed from the plays of the London stage. Shakespeare and University Drama in Early Modern England challenges that long-held notion, illuminating how an apparently secluded theatrical culture became a major source of inspiration for Shakespeare and his contemporaries. While many university plays featured classical themes, others reflected upon the academic environments in which they were produced, allowing a window into the universities themselves. This window proved especially fruitful for Shakespeare, who, as this book reveals, had a sustained fascination with the universities and their inhabitants. Daniel Blank provides groundbreaking new readings of plays from throughout Shakespeare's career, illustrating how depictions of academic culture in Love's Labour's Lost, Hamlet, and Macbeth were shaped by university plays. Shakespeare was not unique, however. This book also discusses the impact of university drama on professional plays by Christopher Marlowe, Robert Greene, and Ben Jonson, all of whom in various ways facilitated the connection between the university stage and the London commercial stage. Yet this connection, perhaps counterintuitively, is most significant in the works of a playwright who had no formal attachment to Oxford or Cambridge. Shakespeare, this study shows, was at the center of a rich exchange between two seemingly disparate theatrical worlds.

The essays analyze Shakespeare’s specific debts to classical works and weigh his classicism’s likeness and unlikeness to that of others in his time; they also evaluate the effects of that classical influence to assess the extent to which it is connected with whatever qualities still make Shakespeare, himself, a classic (arguably the classic) of modern world literature and drama. The first sense of the classic which the volume addresses is the classical culture of Latin and Greek reading, translation, and imitation. Education in the canon of pagan classics bound Shakespeare together with other writers in what was the dominant tradition of English and European poetry and drama, up through the nineteenth and even well into the twentieth century. Second—and no less central—is the idea of classics as such, that of books whose perceived value, exceeding that of most in their era, justifies their protection against historical and cultural change. The volume’s organizing insight is that as Shakespeare was made a classic in this second, antiquarian sense, his work’s reception has more and more come to resemble that of classics in the first sense—of ancient texts subject to labored critical study by masses of professional interpreters who are needed to mediate their meaning, simply because of the texts’ growing remoteness from ordinary life, language, and consciousness. The volume presents overviews and argumentative essays about the presence of Latin and Greek literature in Shakespeare’s writing. Book excerpt: Greek and Roman epic poetry has always provided creative artists in the modern world with a rich storehouse of themes. Tim Supple and Simon Reade's 1999 stage adaptation of Ted Hughes' Tales from Ovid for the RSC heralded a new lease of life for receptions of the genre, and it now routinely provides raw material for the performance repertoire of both major cultural institutions and emergent, experimental theatre companies. This volume represents the first systematic attempt to chart the afterlife of epic in modern performance traditions, with chapters covering not only a significant chronological span, but also ranging widely across both place and genre, analysing lyric, film, dance, and opera from Europe to Asia and the Americas. What emerges most clearly is how anxieties about the ability to write epic in the early modern world, together with the ancient precedent of Greek tragedy's reworking of epic material, explain its migration to the theatre. This move, though, was not without problems, as epic encountered the barriers imposed by neo-classicists, who sought to restrict serious theatre to a narrowly defined reality that precluded its broad sweeps across time and place. In many instances in recent years, the fact that the Homeric epics were composed orally has rendered reinvention not only legitimate, but also deeply appropriate, opening up a range of forms and traditions within which epic themes and structures may be explored. Drawing on the expertise of specialists from the fields of classical studies, English and comparative literature, modern languages, music, dance, and theatre and performance studies, as well as from practitioners within the creative industries, the volume is able to offer an unprecedented modern and dynamic study of 'epic' content and form across myriad diverse performance arenas.
