Book The First Schleswig Holstein War 1848 50

Download or read book The First Schleswig Holstein War 1848 50 written by Nick Svendsen and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1848 was a turbulent but momentous time in Europe. Within this context, the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein were caught between the rising nationalism and desire for unification of the Prussian/German nation states and the traditional alliances with the Danish Kingdom. The Schleswig Holsteiners decided that allegiance with the German Federation, including possessing their own constitution, was the best way forward. They rebelled against the Danish and looked to the Prussians with their greater military prowess for help. In Denmark, as in other European countries, the call for a democratic constitution caused social disturbance, triggered initially by the February riots in Paris. The Danish monarchy, in crisis, both constitutionally and in terms of monarchical succession continued to lay claim on their southernmost duchies and sent their armed forces to destroy the Schleswig-Holstein insurgents. The author describes the battles and battlefields upon which this crisis was played out: from the first major action at Bov (9 April, 1848) to the last major battles of the war, at Isted (25 July 1850) and Missunde (12 September 1850), from the geomorphic landscape influencing battlefield strategy down to the description of a farmhouse where Prussian officers jumped out of windows to save themselves from the Danish.

Book The Schleswig Holstein War Between Denmark and the German States

Download or read book The Schleswig Holstein War Between Denmark and the German States written by Edward Dicey and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denmark, Prussia and Austria at war-2 volumes in one special edition Europe is familiar with wars which have ostensibly arisen from issues of succession among its monarchies. Most of these provided nothing less than a pretext for grasping advantages, and the Second Schleswig-Holstein War, fought in 1864 following the unclear succession of the Danish monarchy, can be seen as one of the several conflicts orchestrated by Prussia and Austria to establish themselves as dominant powers in Europe. This was not the first time the Schleswig and Holstein question had resulted in bloodshed. Originally affiliated to Denmark, the status of the duchies became more complicated, and the situation confrontational, as Denmark broke treaties in order to force integration. Outrage among the populations of the duchies escalated, since ethnic divisions had incrementally grown, making allegiances to one side or the other evident by trade, culture and language. Inevitably when the dialogue failed war was inevitable. Denmark was the underdog when it came to military might and proficiency, and the Battle of Dybbol resulted in Prussian victory. This in depth study of a lesser known European 'small war' was written by a journalist who was 'on the spot' throughout the conflict, and it benefits not only from an understanding of the causes of the war, but also from closely observed personal experience as events unfolded and escalated towards battle. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Now, supposing this news to be substantially true, it is believed by the best judges here, that it can be capable of only two explanations: one is, that the Danish retreat is due to strategic reasons; and that the Danes, finding their forces too weak to'defend the straggling works of the Dannewerke, have retired to the much shorter line of fortifications which covers the narrowest point of the peninsula from Flensburg on the Baltic, to Husum on the North Sea. The second explanation is, that this retreat, if true, is due to political motives. It is possible the Danes may have become convinced that any resistance, however gallant, could have no permanent chance of success against the overwhelming forces of Germany, and that, therefore, the wisest policy was not to continue a resistance, whose only practical result could be to render any compromise impossible. The latter is the version which finds most supporters, and the Prussian officers here state confidently that, " the war is over." If this opinion is sound the retreat of the Danes is of doubtful benefit for the cause of the Duchies; and this fact may account for the utter absence of any outward enthusiasm with which the news has been received in Kiel Certainly, the intelligence that the Danes are retreating was even received with extreme outward indifference in this the capital of SchleswigHolsteinism. Eckernfbrde, February 7. This day week the Danes marched out of Eckernforde with colours flying, and prepared for a long and determined resistance. Their retreat was believed by the inhabitants and by the soldiers themselves to be simply a military movement, in order to place their army behind the impregnable line of works which go by the general name of the Dannewerke. Not a week has...

Excerpt: ... would be cheaply purchased by the loss, if it must be, of Schleswig and Alsen. Jutland, again, has a much closer personal interest in keeping the peninsula under one government with herself than the Danish islands can possibly have. And so on. I am not saying for one moment that in each of the different provinces there exists a party with a distinct policy. I wish alone to show that the existence of these individual and contradictory interests necessarily impairs the force of Denmark in carrying on hostilities. . March 28. At last the war has begun in earnest. What causes may have decided the Prussians to commit themselves finally to the task of capturing the works of Dybbol, it is useless now to consider. Speculations have given place to fact; and the sword is to cut the knot which diplomacy, hitherto, has failed to disentangle. Aha jacta est --the lot has been thrown for war; and now there is no alternative open for the Germans except to enter Alsen as conquerors, or to retire from before Dybbol baflled and defeated. To a spectator this change from the monotony of a wearisome, purposeless bombardment to the brisk and rapid action of battle must needs be most welcome. And it is with sincere and heartfelt pleasure I have now to record the fact that the first onslaught of the besiegers has resulted in a decided victory for Denmark. Your opinions about the abstract rights or wrongs of this complicated struggle may be what you like; your views of the expediency of continuing the war may differ from those current amongst the Danes; but I defy any man with blood in his heart, or living, as I do, amongst this kindly, gallant people, not to wish them God-speed in their deathstruggle against overwhelming numbers--not to be glad with their...

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the final conflict over the now almost forgotten "Schleswig-Holstein Question", once a pivotal issue for the great powers of Europe. The campaign of Schleswig and Jutland was also the first of Otto von Bismarck's Wars of German Unification, which together created a united German Empire under Prussian leadership. The detailed story of this, the last of the "Cabinet Wars", is told here for the first time in English, compiled from numerous published and unpublished sources, including many contemporary and first hand accounts, as well as official reports. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schleswig-Holstein War, Vol. 2 of 2 Not having a classical dictionary at hand, I cannot say whether the Ides of March are really past; but I know that, metaphorically, they may safely be said to have come and gone. The sixty-seventh anniversary of the birth of his Majesty Frederick William Louis, King of Prussia, has passed over without becoming memorable in history as the anniversary also of a great German victory. The disgrace of the campaign of 1848 - 50 has not yet been wiped out in Danish blood; and the island of Alsen still remains disunited from Schleswig. In fact, the long-promised attack on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schleswig-Holstein War, Vol. 1 of 2 The letters of which these volumes are mainly composed were written, all of them, on the spur of the moment, many of them under circumstances of extreme haste and difficulty. In revising them, however, I have thought it best to leave them much as I originally wrote them, omitting only such portions as had, if any, solely a passing interest. I trust that these pages, faulty as they are in many ways, will be found to represent fairly the momentous struggle which it was my lot to witness. I know that there is much in these letters with which both Danes and Germans will disagree. I can only say that I sought to write the truth, as I saw it.
