Book Scaling of Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Technical Progress Report

Download or read book Scaling of Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys Technical Progress Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zirconium-base binary alloys were prepared using the elements Mo, Fe, Co, Cr, Ni. Cu, Ag, Ta, Nb, Bt. Pa, Os, Ir, Rh, Ru, V, Si, Mn, Sn, Pb, W, Sb, Ge, Al, Ti, Mg, Zn, La, and Ba. Also, Zr-base ternary alloys were prepared using the elements Cu, Ni, Nb, Ta, V, Sn, Sb, and W. The maximum total alloy content of the alloys was five per cent. The Zr used was low-Hf sponge, and the alloys were prepared-by arc melting in an Ar atmosphere. The alloys were tested for scaling resistance at the temperatures 1200, 1500, and 1800 deg F in a multi-specimen furnace for periods up to about 300 hours. Scaling Propensity of the alloys was evaluated on the basis of the weight increase per unit area as compared to that of unalloyed Zr. The binary alloys containing Ni and Cu showed the greatest scaling resistance of all the binary alloys at all temperatures. Ternary alloys showed little or no improvement over the most scaling resistant binary alloys. The number of alloys more resistant than unalloyed Zr was about the same at 1200 and 1500 deg F, but was considerably more at 1800 deg F. In general, there was some change in the order of relative scaling propensity based on the average weight increase per average. unit area per hour at the three temperatures. A logarithmic plot of weight increase versus time for most of the alloys showed a sharp increase in the scaling rate after various periods of time, whereas very few showed a decrease. (auth).

Book Phase Transformations

Download or read book Phase Transformations written by Srikumar Banerjee and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 837 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms phase transitions and phase transformations are often used in an interchangeable manner in the metallurgical literature. In Phase Transformations, transformations driven by pressure changes, radiation and deformation and those occurring in nanoscale multilayers are brought to the fore. Order-disorder transformations, many of which constitute very good examples of continuous transformations, are dealt with in a comprehensive manner. Almost all types of phase transformations and reactions that are commonly encountered in inorganic materials are covered and the underlying thermodynamic, kinetic and crystallographic aspects elucidated. Shows readers the advancements in the field - due to enhanced computing power and superior experimental capability Drawing upon the background and the research experience of the authors, bringing together a wealth of experience Written essentially from a physical metallurgists view point

Book Microstructures of Zirconium based Ternary Carbide Alloys

Download or read book Microstructures of Zirconium based Ternary Carbide Alloys written by Ronald C. Rossi and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructures of the zirconium carbide-graphite alloys were characterized, and the effect of ternary additions on the microstructure of a high-carbon base alloy was studied. Alloying additions to a 34 atomic percent zirconium, 66 atomic percent carbon alloy included boron, chromium, magnesium and silicon, and tantalum. Of the ternary additions, tantalum displayed the most profound effect by the complete alteration of the microstructure. Other additions caused only minimal changes in the microstructure. (Author).

Book Comprehensive Nuclear Materials

Download or read book Comprehensive Nuclear Materials written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-07-22 with total page 4871 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field
