Book The Saxophone

    Book Details:
  • Author : Scottie W. Wright
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2023
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Saxophone written by Scottie W. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As any saxophonist can tell you, the altissimo range poses far more difficulties than the natural range of the saxophone. The altissimo range uses unintuitive fingering patterns, has a daunting number of alternate fingerings per note, requires rapidly changing vocal settings, and places strain on our embouchure. Altissimo can even be thought of as a separate discipline within saxophone playing. Attempting to learn altissimo by using the same approaches as learning to play the natural range can lead to frustration and repeated poor practice that reinforces incorrect muscle memory. Screech-o-nomics offers a fresh approach to altissimo, through carefully designed and focused exercises that deconstruct altissimo by focusing on the mouthpiece alone. With thoughtful and consistent practice, the method shared here will: Strengthen the embouchure, Reinforce vocal setting muscle memory, Improve control throughout the altissimo range, Help achieve extremely high altissimo (altissimo E to double B). Screech-o-nomics will improve tonguing, dynamics and vibrato, as well as extend the range of playable notes on the mouthpiece to over two octaves. With this foundation, saxophonists will achieve the same control over altissimo as over the natural range.

Book The Art of Saxophone Playing

Download or read book The Art of Saxophone Playing written by Larry Teal and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 1963 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Larry Teal, the best method of learning to play the saxophone is to study with a competent teacher. Teal's studies were mostly of instruments other than the saxophone, but as a student at a Chautauqua summer session, he came under the influence of Georges Barrère, the eminent French flutist. He played bass clarinet with the Detroit Symphony, but he continued to be absorbed by the saxophone. As a result of his acquired expertise and growing reputation, he was appointed to a full-time faculty position as a saxophone teacher by the University of Michigan -- the first ever to receive such an appointment from a major university. During his 21-year tenure, he attracted students from all over, thus exerting an ever widening influence on saxophone teaching and performing.

Book A Literature Review of Prominent Saxophone Altissimo Pedagogy Publications

Download or read book A Literature Review of Prominent Saxophone Altissimo Pedagogy Publications written by Joel Ferst and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its invention in the 1840s by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax, the saxophone has grown rapidly in both repertoire and pedagogy. Sax applied for, and received, a 15-year patent for the instrument on June 28, 1846, which covered 14 different versions of the original design ranging from sopranino to contrabass. The instruments were split into two series: a group pitched in F and C, speculated to be for orchestral use, and a group pitched in Bb and Eb, speculated for use in French military bands, which became the standard version. The original, non-transposed keyed range of the saxophone was in treble clef and went from B below the staff to the first Eb above the staff. The non-transposed keyed range of the modern saxophone spans two and a half octaves, from low Bb below the staff in treble clef to high F# above the staff in treble clef. It is clear from writings and accounts by Hector Berlioz, a close personal friend of Adolphe Sax, that a four-octave range was always envisioned. Through the manipulation of the oral cavity, which in America is most commonly referred to as voicing, saxophonists can isolate the harmonics in the natural overtone series to extend past the keyed range to achieve a range of up to four octaves. This document will serve as a literature review of prominent pedagogical literature about the extended range of the saxophone, as well as include sections discussing the process behind producing the extended range above the keyed range of the saxophone. This document will also address different methodologies and approaches
