Book The Hidden Author

Download or read book The Hidden Author written by Gian Biagio Conte and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Satyricon of Petronius, a comic novel written in the first century A.D., is famous today primarily for its amazing banquet tale, "Trimalchio's Feast." But this episode is only one part of the larger picture of life during Nero's rule presented in the work. In this accessible discussion of Petronius's masterful use of parody, Gian Biagio Conte offers an interpretation of the Satyricon as a whole. He combines the scholarly precision of close reading with a significant, original theoretical model. At the heart of his interpretation, Conte reveals the technique of the "hidden author" that Petronius employs at the expense of his characters, in particular the teller of the story, Enclopius. By remaining hidden outside the narrative, Petronius invites the reader to smile at the folies de grandeur that occur in a culture of scholars and declaimers. Yet as Conte shows, behind the parody and inexhaustible humor of the Satyricon lies an unexpectedly serious lament. For those familiar with the Satyricon, as well as for new readers, Conte's book will be a reliable, enjoyable guide to the wonders the Satyricon contains.

P.G. Walsh captures the spirit of the original in this new and lively translation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Satyricon" of Petronius and the "Metamorphoses" (or "The Golden Ass") of Apuleius are the only novels written at Rome before AD 200 to have survived. The genre is the comic romance, the literature of relaxation in the ancient world. This study defines the genre and sets it in the context of other forms of fiction of the period. It shows that both Petronius and Apuleius introduced important innovations into the traditional comic romance. A critical study of "The Satyricon" is included, with a separate chapter on Trimalchio's feast, a central comic episode of the book. "The Golden Ass" is similarly examined, again with special analysis of its centre piece, the story of Cupid and Psyche. The book assesses the later influence of the two novels on the mainstream of European picaresque fiction.

As Karl Wolff investigates in his new collection of essays, erotica belongs in a vast literary landscape, a genre that hides hidden treasures and rare delights. He covers erotica from The Song of Songs to Nic Kelman's girls: A Paean; from Gynecocracy to Matriarchy: Freedom in Bondage; from City of Night to Naked Lunch; Story of the Eye to Story of O; and a bawdy bouquet of graphic novels. The NSFW Files includes essays on erotica written by a Nobel laureate, an outsider artist, a surrealist, and a French prisoner, among many more. Most important, the essay collection offers an answer to the question, "What dirty book should I read next?"

Book excerpt: The work Satyricon, or Satiricon, was written in 66 AD by Gaius Petronius Arbiter, a Roman courtier during the time of Emperor Nero. A classic of world literature and an important testimony to life in ancient Rome, Satyricon is considered the first realistic novel in world literature. It contains themes that would be explored in greater depth only in the Realist literature of the late 19th century, such as social exploitation and hypocrisy. Most of the characters in Satyricon are devoid of modesty. It is very interesting to note the complete amorality of the citizens, as Christianity had not yet "purified" everyone. There is no repression or shame regarding sexuality. Like any universal classic, Petronius' text describes scenes that can still be identified in human behavior today. In this case, the author's observations about the high society of his time and their behavior still retain an impressive resemblance to their current equivalents. In the words of Otto Maria Carpeaux: "Petronius' work is of strange and cheerful relevance."
