So when an impostor Santa seems set on destroying Christmas (and maybe the world of mortals while he's at it) with the help of a banshee... well, Sigrid is the elf for the job. With the help of a shape-shifting hobgoblin, a frenetic pixie, an ancient dwarf, a leprechaun who's a temperamental writer, a sprite who composes musical masterpieces, a gnome chef, and a talking goat, Sigrid begins the rebellion to end all rebellions... to unseat a grifting Krampus posing as Kris Kringle and restore tidings of comfort and joy to a world running out of hope. With a combination of adventure, satire, and holiday fun, this third entry in the Shadows Walking universe introduces whole new realms of a magical fantasy world, but spins its own story of a group of underdogs battling evil and finding the holiday spirit along the way...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When our son was three or four years old, the question arose for the first time what the difference was between Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus, and we as parents just smiled at it because we couldn't explain it ourselves. We should have taken the time to explain the two figures to him in a plausible way, then things would have gone better in the future because our son is quite an attentive contemporary who questions everything. At that time, we left it to the kindergarten teachers alone to explain to our children what Saint Nicholas and Father Christmas were all about, without suspecting that they were not always telling the truth. And today I blame myself heavily for having lied to our boy all these years and not telling him the truth about these two characters who only have similarities at first glance. But I too had grown up with this big lie when I was a child in the 1970s. Back then, the world was still a different place. Back then, great importance was still attached to honouring Saint Nicholas on 6 December for his deeds, which were so far in the past that I'm sure a lot was added, as with so many saints. And at Christmas, we didn't have Santa Claus, but the Christ Child or at best Father Christmas, who was becoming increasingly popular, not least because more and more films were being produced by Hollywood about the long-bearded, pot-bellied man in the red and white costume. Also includes the four short stories: The Druid's Wisdom, The Creepy Forest, Ludmilla and Spellbound, and Death by Chocolate

  • Author : Gerry Bowler
  • Publisher : McClelland & Stewart
  • Release : 2011-07-27

Download or read book Santa Claus written by Gerry Bowler and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining, often surprising look at the life of the world’s most influential fictional character. He is the embodiment of charity and generosity, a creation of mythology, a tool of clever capitalists. The very idea of him is enduring and powerful. Santa Claus was born in early-nineteenth-century America, but his family tree goes back seven hundred years to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children. Intervening generations were shaggy and strange — whip-wielding menaces to naughty boys and girls. Yet as the raucous, outdoor, alcohol-fuelled holiday gave way to a more domestic, sentimental model, a new kind of gift-bringer was called for — a loveable elf, still judgmental but far less threatening. In this engaging social and cultural history, Gerry Bowler examines the place of Santa Claus in history, literature, advertising, and art. He traces his metamorphosis from a beardless youth into a red-suited peddler. He reveals the lesser-known aspects of the gift-bringer’s life — Santa’s involvement with social and political causes of all stripes (he enlisted on the Union side in the American Civil War), his starring role in the movies and as adman for gun-makers and insurance companies. And he demolishes the myths surrounding Santa Claus and Coca-Cola. Santa Claus: A Biography will stand as the classic work on the long-lived and multifarious Mr. Claus.

Book Santa Claus Worldwide

Download or read book Santa Claus Worldwide written by Tom A. Jerman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive history of the world's midwinter gift-givers, showcasing the extreme diversity in their depictions as well as the many traits and functions these characters share. It tracks the evolution of these figures from the tribal priests who presided over winter solstice celebrations thousands of years before the birth of Christ, to Christian notables like St. Martin and St. Nicholas, to a variety of secular figures who emerged throughout Europe following the Protestant Reformation. Finally, it explains how the popularity of a poem about a "miniature sleigh" and "eight tiny reindeer" helped consolidate the diverse European gift-givers into an enduring tradition in which American children awake early on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought. Although the names, appearance, attire and gift-giving practices of the world's winter solstice gift-givers differ greatly, they are all recognizable as Santa, the personification of the Christmas and Midwinter festivals. Despite efforts to eliminate him by groups as diverse as the Puritans of seventeenth century New England, the Communist Party of the twentieth century Soviet Union and the government of Nazi Germany, Santa has survived and prospered, becoming one of the best known and most beloved figures in the world.

Book The Memory of the Civil War in American Culture

Download or read book The Memory of the Civil War in American Culture written by Alice Fahs and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War retains a powerful hold on the American imagination, with each generation since 1865 reassessing its meaning and importance in American life. This volume collects twelve essays by leading Civil War scholars who demonstrate how the meanings of the Civil War have changed over time. The essays move among a variety of cultural and political arenas--from public monuments to parades to political campaigns; from soldiers' memoirs to textbook publishing to children's literature--in order to reveal important changes in how the memory of the Civil War has been employed in American life. Setting the politics of Civil War memory within a wide social and cultural landscape, this volume recovers not only the meanings of the war in various eras, but also the specific processes by which those meanings have been created. By recounting the battles over the memory of the war during the last 140 years, the contributors offer important insights about our identities as individuals and as a nation. Contributors: David W. Patriotism, a longing to earn more money and adventure lured these "Brunswick Boys"--close friends and co-workers--to enlist. Their recollections offer insights into everyday life in New Jersey during the war--New Brunswick's factory system, education and medicine. These letters also reveal their struggles to survive amid battles and close encounters with death that so many soldiers faced, as well as their difficult transition back to civilian life. Local author Joanne Hamilton Rajoppi presents the fascinating stories of New Brunswick and the Civil War, gleaned from the letters of those who experienced it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one hundred and fifty years after it began, the Civil War still fascinates us—the vast armies marching to war, iconic leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee, the drama of a nation divided. But the Civil War was also about individuals, the hundreds of thousands of ordinary men and boys who fought and died on either side and the families and friends left at home. This Wicked Rebellion: Wisconsin Civil War Soldiers Write Home tells this other side of the story. Drawing from over 11,000 letters in the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Civil War collection, it gives a unique and intimate glimpse of the men and women who took part in the War for the Union. Follow Wisconsin soldiers as they sign up or get drafted, endure drill and picket duty, and get their first experiences of battle. Join them as they fight desperation and fear, encounter the brutality of slavery, and struggle with the reasons for war. From impressions of army life and the South to the hardships of disease and battle, these letters tell the story of the war through the eyes and pens of those who fought in it. This Wicked Rebellion brings to life the heroism and heartache, mayhem and misery of the Civil War, and the powerful role Wisconsin played in it.
