Book On Military and Camp Hospitals and the Health of Troops in the Field

Download or read book On Military and Camp Hospitals and the Health of Troops in the Field written by L. Baudens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Military and Camp Hospitals, and the Health of Troops in the Field: Being the Results of a Commission to Inspect the Sanitary Arrangements of the French Army, and Incidentally of Others Armies in the Crimean War The acknowledge value of the experiences of the French Army in the Crimean war, has suggested the translation of the present volume, with the desire to render the results of the dearly-bought lessons of that campaign useful to the American Armies in the present war for the preservation of our national Government. It became the painful duty of the historians of the Crimean war to record many errors and oversights, resulting in a most fearful loss of human life. When these faults were discovered, their remedy was attempted by the medical and administrative officers of the army, with as much success as their resources allowed; and the expedients adopted for relief, in a wild and desolate region, at a great distance from their supplies, are at once suggestive and profitable to every person who may be concerned in the health of armies. In the translation, the French weights and measures have been mainly changed to their corresponding values known and used in the United States, precisely or approximately, according to the original intention of the author. In rough estimates the metre has been called the yard, an allowance being made when the numbers were large; but in every case where precise quantities are expressed, the rendering has been carefully made, and in some instances both denominations have been retained. Book Florence Nightingale The Crimean War

Download or read book Florence Nightingale The Crimean War written by Lynn McDonald and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 1096 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florence Nightingale is famous as the “lady with the lamp” in the Crimean War, 1854—56. There is a massive amount of literature on this work, but, as editor Lynn McDonald shows, it is often erroneous, and films and press reporting on it have been even less accurate. The Crimean War reports on Nightingale’s correspondence from the war hospitals and on the staggering amount of work she did post-war to ensure that the appalling death rate from disease (higher than that from bullets) did not recur. This volume contains much on Nightingale’s efforts to achieve real reforms. Her well-known, and relatively “sanitized”, evidence to the royal commission on the war is compared with her confidential, much franker, and very thorough Notes on the Health of the British Army, where the full horrors of disease and neglect are laid out, with the names of those responsible.

Download or read book The Crimean War written by Hugh Small and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crimean War was the most destructive conflict of Queen Victoria's reign, the outcome of which was indecisive; most historians regard it as an irrelevant and unnecessary conflict despite its fame for Florence Nightingale and the Charge of the Light Brigade. Here Hugh Small shows how the history of the Crimean War has been manipulated to conceal Britain's – and Europe's – failure. The war governments and early historians combined to withhold the truth from an already disappointed nation in a deception that lasted over a century. Accounts of battles, still widely believed, gave fictitious leadership roles to senior officers. Careful analysis of the fighting shows that most of Britain's military successes in the war were achieved by the common soldiers, who understood tactics far better than the officer class and who acted usually without orders and often in contravention of them. Hugh Small's mixture of politics and battlefield narrative identifies a turning point in history, and raises disturbing questions about the utility of war.

Book Dickens and Empire

Download or read book Dickens and Empire written by Grace Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dickens and Empire offers a reevaluation of Charles Dickens's imaginative engagement with the British Empire throughout his career. Employing postcolonial theory alongside readings of Dickens's novels, journalism and personal correspondence, it explores his engagement with Britain's imperial holdings as imaginative spaces onto which he offloaded a number of pressing domestic and personal problems, thus creating an entangled discourse between race and class. Drawing upon a wealth of primary material, it offers a radical reassessment of the writer's stance on racial matters. In the past Dickens has been dismissed as a dogged and sustained racist from the 1850s until the end of his life; but here author Grace Moore reappraises The Noble Savage, previously regarded as a racist tract. Examining it side by side with a series of articles by Lord Denman in The Chronicle, which condemned the staunch abolitionist Dickens as a supporter of slavery, Moore reveals that the tract is actually an ironical riposte. This finding facilitates a review and reassessment of Dickens's controversial outbursts during the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857, and demonstrates that his views on racial matters were a good deal more complex than previous critics have suggested. Moore's analysis of a number of pre- and post-Mutiny articles calling for reform in India shows that Dickens, as their publisher, would at least have been aware of the grievances of the Indian people, and his journal's sympathy toward them is at odds with his vitriolic responses to the insurrection. This first sustained analysis of Dickens and his often problematic relationship to the British Empire provides fresh readings of a number of Dickens texts, in particular A Tale of Two Cities. The work also presents a more complicated but balanced view of one of the most famous figures in Victorian literature.
