Boki allowed that the teaching of the Romish faith there would tend to civil strife. But I cannot here go through the narrative of subsequent events connected with this: but such as deserve it must be given rather in the order of time in which they occurred, involving various actors in the progress of things for years. As the captain landed the Romish teachers and artisans without the permission of the government, and refused to obey the queen's orders communicated to him by Boki, to take them away, they were left in precarious circumstances at Honolulu, and received favor from Boki. Before I left Lahaina, an outrage occurred there, on the 23d of October, 1827, the commencement of a new crusade against the tabu. Wahinepio, late governess, had died, as also her son, Kahalaia, and Geo. P. T., his rival, almost simultaneously, in 1826. Hoapili succeeded Wahinepio as governor by the appointment of Kaahumanu, and was disposed to maintain her policy. Several women, belonging to his jurisdiction, the governor learned, were, in violation of the tabu, or government prohibition, onboard an English whaler, the John Palmer, in Lahaina roadstead. Hoapili demanded of the captain, an American, to set them on shore or permit his men to fetch them: but he would do neither. The governor condescended to reason with him, and said, "When your men desert your ships and come on shore, and you apply for them, we deliver them up without hesitation. These women have broken our laws, and you would take them away. It is our right to require that you deliver up to me our people who violate our laws." Repeating this reasonable demand, day after day, unheeded, and finding the vessel about to take her anchor, and the captain being...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Residence of Twenty-One Years in the Sandwich Islands, or the Civil, Religious, and Political History of Those Islands: Comprising a Particular View of the Missionary Operations Connected With the Introduction and Progress of Christianity and Civilization Among the Hawaiian People The introduction and progress of Christianity and civilization at the Sandwich Islands, viewed in connexion with their original state, present condition, and prospects, have become a matter of interest to many who desire to see a connected account of the efforts to raise that people from their degradation and barbarism, and convert them from their idols, their cruel superstitions, and their unbridled lusts. Such a narrative I have been requested to give by those in whose judgment I confide, and with whom I have, for a quarter of a century, been specially connected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Sandwich Islands It is proper that some account should be given of the manner in which this volume came into existence. Being connected with the Mission Seminary at Lahainaluna, and being called to teach History as one branch of my department of instruction, it occurred to me as quite objectionable that the scholars, whilst they were becoming acquainted with other nations, should remain to a great degree in ignorance of their own. Accordingly, in 1836, I made some effort to collect the main facts of Hawaiian History. There were but few records and those recent. Most important events were afloat in the memories of the people and fast passing into oblivion. If they were to be preserved it was time they were collected. The method which I took to collect facts was as follows: I first made out a list of questions, arranged chronologically according to the best of my knowledge. I had continual occasion afterwards to add to the questions, to vary and to change them. I then selected ten of the best scholars of the Seminary, and formed them into a class of inquiry. I met them at an appointed hour, gave them the first question and conversed freely with them upon it, that they might understand fully and distinctly what was sought for. I then requested them to go individually and separately to the oldest and most knowing of the chiefs and people, gain all the information that they could on the question given out, commit each his information to writing and be ready to read it on a day and hour appointed. At Kohala, ties on Hawaii, the people, in their effort to pro cure a new and more commodious house of worship, had to bring the timber six or eight miles from the mountains. The wood was hard and tough, axes were scarce, and there were few facilities for keeping them sharp. After the timber had been cut and hewn, from eighty to a hundred and fifty persons of both sexes laid hold of a long rope, made fast to one of the timbers, and a day was required to drag it up and down the precipitous ravines and through woods and brush, to the ground set apart for the building. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sandwich Island: Notes It is with feelings of much diffidence I submit the following pages to a perusal by the public, hut it is with the hope that the object at which they aim will be speedily accomplished. Several pamphlets and volumes have already been issued from the press, concerning that most important of all the groups that stud the vast Pacific-the Sandwich Islands. But these facts have not deterred me from making my own observations, and employing my own language. If the present condition of affairs at the Hawaiian Islands augur any thing, there can not but be a good prospect that they will soon form an integral portion of the United States. They are absolutely essential to the protection and advancement of American commerce, and whoever owns them will be master of the Pacific. I have endeavored to portray the condition of things as they appeared to me in 1853, and my only aim has been impartiality, independent of all party consideration. I have taken especial pains to develop the past and present condition of the people, in their various relations, and have endeavored to specify a few reasons for the "annexation" of that important group of islands.
