Book Notable Americans of Czechoslovak Ancestry in Arts and Letters and in Education

Download or read book Notable Americans of Czechoslovak Ancestry in Arts and Letters and in Education written by Miloslav Rechcigl Jr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 1537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As pointed out in my last two publications, no comprehensive study has been undertaken about the American Learned Men and Women with Czechoslovak roots. The aim of this work is to correct this glaring deficiency, with the focus on immigration from the period of mass migration and beyond, irrespective whether they were born in their European ancestral homes or whether they have descended from them. Whereas in the two mentioned monographs, the emphasis has been on scholars and social and natural scientists; and men and women in medicine, applied sciences and engineering, respectively, the present compendium deals with notable Americans of Czechoslovak ancestry in arts and letters, and in education. With respect to women, although most professional fields were closed to them through much of the nineteenth century, the area of arts and letters was opened to them, as noted earlier and as this compendium authenticates.

Book The Literary Legacy of a poor Devil

Download or read book The Literary Legacy of a poor Devil written by Randall P. Donaldson and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Der arme Teufel ("The Poor Devil") is the name of the weekly journal published in Detroit, Michigan by Reitzel from December 1884 to his death in 1898. Donaldson (German language and literature, Loyola College, Baltimore) traces Reitzel's career, his liberal political views, aesthetics stressing the beauty of nature in everyday life, and reputation as the best prose stylist in 19th-century German-America. The author compensates for previous studies that failed to provide context on that community. About half the book consists of appended Reitzel compositions in untranslated German and sample facsimile issues of the journal. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book SamulNori written by Nathan Hesselink and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978, four musicians crowded into a cramped basement theater in downtown Seoul, where they, for the first time, brought the rural percussive art of p’ungmul to a burgeoning urban audience. In doing so, they began a decades-long reinvention of tradition, one that would eventually create an entirely new genre of music and a national symbol for Korean culture. Nathan Hesselink’s SamulNori traces this reinvention through the rise of the Korean supergroup of the same name, analyzing the strategies the group employed to transform a museum-worthy musical form into something that was both contemporary and historically authentic, unveiling an intersection of traditional and modern cultures and the inevitable challenges such a mix entails. Providing everything from musical notation to a history of urban culture in South Korea to an analysis of SamulNori’s teaching materials and collaborations with Euro-American jazz quartet Red Sun, Hesselink offers a deeply researched study that highlights the need for traditions—if they are to survive—to embrace both preservation and innovation.

Book Baroness of Hobcaw

Download or read book Baroness of Hobcaw written by Mary E. Miller and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The riveting biography of an heiress, equestrienne, spy-hunter, and patron of ecology Belle W. Baruch (1899-1964) could outride, outshoot, outhunt, and outsail most of the young men of her elite social circle--abilities that distanced her from other debutantes of 1917. Unapologetic for her athleticism and interests in traditionally masculine pursuits, Baruch towered above male and female counterparts in height and daring. While she is known today for the wildlife conservation and biological research center on the South Carolina coast that bears her family name, Belle's story is a rich narrative about one nonconformist's ties to the land. In Baroness of Hobcaw, Mary E. Miller provides a provocative portrait of this unorthodox woman who gave a gift of monumental importance to the scientific community. Belle's father, Bernard M. Baruch, the so-called Wolf of Wall Street, held sway over the financial and diplomatic world of the early twentieth century and served as an adviser to seven U.S. presidents. In 1905 he bought Hobcaw Barony, a sprawling seaside retreat where he entertained the likes of Churchill and FDR. Belle's daily life at Hobcaw reflects the world of wealthy northerners, including the Vanderbilts and Luces, who bought tracts of southern acreage. Miller details Belle's exploits--fox hunting at Hobcaw, show jumping at Deauville, flying her own plane, traveling with Edith Bolling Wilson, and patrolling the South Carolina beach for spies during World War II. Belle's story also reveals her efforts to win her mother's approval and her father's attention, as well as her unraveling relationships with friends, family, employees, and lovers--both male and female. Miller describes Belle's final success in saving Hobcaw from development as the overarching triumph of a tempestuous life.

Book excerpt: Here is a catalogue raisonee of Stockhausen's complete output, involving no technical analyses, but rather an examination of the music's aesthetic, practical, and intellectual assumptions. The book contains plentiful citations from the history of radio, film, and sound recording, and from contemporary science and technology. Laid out in strict chronological order, it contains unusually ample commentary on the composer's sources of inspiration, including discussions of the composers Hermann Schroeder, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Schaeffer, Herbert Eimert, John Cage, the information scientist Werner Meyer-Eppler, and structural anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss. Each of Stockhausen's compositions is treated on its own terms, and also as a piece in a larger puzzle, embracing surrealist art and literature as well as music. Every piece of music is fully documented within the text with full information of the publisher, catalogue number, instrumentation, duration, and composer-authorized compact disc.

Book Cosmic Miniatures and the Future Sense

Download or read book Cosmic Miniatures and the Future Sense written by Leslie Adelson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Kluge’s revolutionary storytelling for the 21st-century pivots on the production of anti-realist hope under conditions of real catastrophe. Rather than relying on possibility alone, his experimental miniatures engender counterfactual horizons of futurity that are made incrementally accessible to lived experience through narrative form. Innovative close readings and theoretical reflection alike illuminate the dimensional quality of future time in Kluge’s radical prose, where off-worldly orientation and unnatural narrative together yield new sensory perspectives on associative networks, futurity, scale, and perspective itself. This study also affords new perspectives on the importance of Kluge’s creative writing for critical studies of German thought (including Kant, Marx, Benjamin, and especially Adorno), Holocaust memory, contemporary globalization, literary miniatures, and narrative studies of futurity as form. Cosmic Miniatures contributes an experiential but non-empirical sense of hope to future studies, a scholarly field of pressing public interest in endangered times.
