Book excerpt: BACK TO THE SALT MINES The only way to avoid problems is to stay out of other people's business, but Clint Adams can't help but step in when a friend is in need. When his old comrade Ben Blanchard asks Clint to come check on some shady business going on with his salt mine, Clint hitches up his horse and heads out to Hutchinson, Kansas--and straight into hot water. Blanchard's recent troubles with cave-ins at the mine clearly point to sabotage, and the dirty work has the name of rich local rancher Avery Kendall all over it. But Kendall isn't just the wealthiest man in town--his deep pockets are paying off half of the residents, not to mention the local law. Now, to protect his friend's business, find a saboteur, and save his own skin, the Gunsmith will have to dig up more than just dirt... OVER 15 MILLION GUNSMITH BOOKS IN PRINT!

Book Post Bonneville Paleoearthquake Chronology of the Salt Lake City Segment Wasatch Fault Zone from the 1999 Megatrench Site

Download or read book Post Bonneville Paleoearthquake Chronology of the Salt Lake City Segment Wasatch Fault Zone from the 1999 Megatrench Site written by James McCalpin and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2002 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a paleoseismic investigation designed to date a long series of consecutive earthquakes on the Wasatch fault zone and to measure the variability of recurrence times between the events. Geologists have long recognized that the comparatively short average recurrence interval (compared to most other basin-and-range normal faults) between large surface-faulting earthquakes on the Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch fault zone during mid- to late-Holocene time is potentially anomalous, and possibly affected by the rise and fall of Lake Bonneville. This study extends the paleoearthquake record back to Bonneville time, nearly doubling the previous record, and provides new information on the timing and periodicity of surface faulting on the Salt Lake City segment from the latest Pleistocene through the Holocene. The trench and accompanying auger hole for this study exposed 26 meters of vertical section, roughly four times that of a typical paleoseismic trench on the Wasatch fault zone, hence the name “Megatrench.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the hospital or at the doctor's office, it's the nurses whom patients trust to answer their questions simply, directly, and understandably. So who better to provide inside information about how to manage common health conditions, apply simple home treatments, and make the most of the health care system? Compiling the expertise of 550 nursing schools and 100 nurses nationwide, Ask a Nurse is a one-of-a-kind quick-reference book of invaluable hands-on treatment and healing tips. Every word in it has been written by nurses: nurses who practice nursing, nurses who teach it, nurses who spend all their days working with and caring for patients. They know what works and what doesn't; they can tell you when you need a doctor's care and what you can do yourself. Ask a Nurse focuses on the everyday complaints -- acne, allergies, cuts and scrapes, diarrhea, flu, hemorrhoids, insomnia, stress, and more -- that you can most easily treat yourself, at home in most cases. Arranged alphabetically, the entries explain common conditions, list detailed symptoms, and offer top-to-bottom treatment "menus," featuring everything from effective over-the-counter medications to tried-and-true home remedies and self-care. Alternative and herbal therapies are included: readers will learn, for instance, that devil's claw can ease arthritis pain, tea tree oil can relieve athlete's foot, and a tea bag can reduce swelling. The nurses address men's, women's, and children's unique health issues separately, with special attention paid to identifying and treating addictions and eating disorders; showing what type of contraception to use and how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases; and highlighting when infertility and sexual dysfunction can be handled at home. The nurses also present a complete guide to consumer rights, dispensing tips on how to make a hospital stay more comfortable, choose a reliable pharmacist, put together a home medical kit, and finally, decide when a living will or do-not-resuscitate order is appropriate. With easy-to-find reader-friendly boxes and charts supplementing the A-Z directory of everyday ailments, Ask a Nurse offers readers all the comfort, care, and reassuring practical advice for which nurses have always been known. With 100 nurses putting their names to their personal tricks of the trade, this book provides the insider information that you can use to make wise decisions regarding your health.

Book Great Salt Lake

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary Topping
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Great Salt Lake written by Gary Topping and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably Utah's most widely recognized topographical feature, the Great Salt Lake is possibly also the state's least appreciated and understood one. While visitors often feel compelled to take a closer look at it and even test its salinity by dipping a finger or a toe, many native Utahns and tourists never take the time to explore the lake more extensively or to learn about its many facets. Awaiting those who do so is the discovery of just how fascinating a place the lake is. As Gary Topping points out in his introduction, Great Salt Lake "sounds like someone's literary fantasy: a vast interior sea bordered by marshes and dotted with islands that support thousands of shore birds of a great variety of species, yet flanked on other sides by an immense salt waste that forbids human habitation... Great Salt Lake remains one of the world's most remarkable geological phenomena, a place of beauty, drama, and complexity to challenge the most ambitious curiosity and imagination." To encourage a deeper knowledge and understanding of this unique body of water, Topping has assembled some of the best historical and contemporary writing on Great Salt Lake. The authors include historical figures such as Osborne Russell, Jedediah Smith, John C. Frémont, Howard Stansbury, and, less known, Alfred Lambourne, a turn-of-the-century artist and western Thoreau who sought solitude and contemplation by building a house on remote Gunnison Island. Also included are selections from more recent writing about the lake, among them pieces by well-known historians Dale Morgan and Brigham Madsen and other essays that look at the varied ways, recreational and economic, that people have used or sought to use the lake. The subjects of the collected pieces range from fantastic stories people tell about this odd inland sea to attempts they have made to exploit it for commercial value; from exploration and emigration to recreation and resorts; from the lake's prehistory to its future, as development and population growth near its shores create conflicting demands and pressures.
