Book Entangled Mobilities in the Transnational Salsa Circuit

Download or read book Entangled Mobilities in the Transnational Salsa Circuit written by Joanna Menet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/e/9781003002697, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license. With attention to the transnational dance world of salsa, this book explores the circulation of people, imaginaries, dance movements, conventions and affects from a transnational perspective. Through interviews and ethnographic, multi-sited research in several European cities and Havana, the author draws on the notion of "entangled mobilities" to show how the intimate gendered and ethnicised moves on the dance floor relate to the cross-border mobility of salsa dance professionals and their students. A combination of research on migration and mobility with studies of music and dance, Entangled Mobilities in the Transnational Salsa Circuit contributes to the fields of transnationalism, mobility and dance studies, thus providing a deeper theoretical and empirical understanding of gendered and racialised transnational phenomena. As such it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in migration, cultural studies and gender studies.

Download or read book Man Interrupted written by Philip Zimbardo and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, Philip Zimbardo gave a TED Talk called "The Demise of Guys," which has been viewed by over 1.8 million people. A TED eBook called The Demise of Guys: Why Guys Are Struggling and What We Can Do About It followed. The is an expansion of that brief polemic based on Zimbardo's observations, research, and the survey that was completed by over 20,000 viewers of the original TED Talk. The premise here is that we are facing a not-so-brave new world; a world in which young men are getting left behind. In record numbers men are flaming out academically and failing socially and sexually with women. Philip G. Zimbardo and Nikita Coulombe say that an addiction to video games and online porn have created a generation of shy, socially awkward, emotionally removed, and risk-adverse young men who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school, and employment. Taking a critical look at a problem that is tearing at families and societies everywhere, Man, Interrupted suggests that our young men are suffering from a new form of "arousal addiction," and introduce a bold new plan for getting them back on track. The concluding chapters offer a set of solutions that can be affected by different segments of society: What the government can do What schools can do What parents can do What men can do What women can do What the media can do Filled with telling anecdotes, results of fascinating research, perceptive analysis, and concrete suggestions for change. Man Interrupted is a book for our time. It is a book that informs, challenged, and ultimately inspires.

  • Author : Ine Beljaars
  • Publisher : Maklu

  • ISBN : 9055893110
  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Body Politics written by Ine Beljaars and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kizomba dancing originated in Angola, Africa but has been gaining in popularity in the Netherlands since 2011. Curious how this cultural transmission affects white Dutch notions regarding self and other, this book examines the socio-cultural production of difference among white Dutch in the Dutch kizomba scene, primarily in relation to people of African and African diasporic descent. Tying into existing literature regarding the paradoxical state of contemporary Dutch society regarding gender, race and ethnicity, the author explores the balancing act between freedoms and restrictions that shape, guide, and inform peoples behaviour. She thereby illustrates various performative mechanisms through which difference is reproduced. This is relevant in a time characterized by racial ignorance on the one hand, and xenophobia and heated debate concerning Dutchness and Otherness on the other. Taking the body as point of departure through which gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and nationality are analysed, the author demonstrates how the micro-politics of small, embodied movements connect to larger transnational mobilities and their macro-political contexts. The fine-grained ethnographic descriptions navigate the reader through a highly sensitive topic in the Netherlands and contribute to social and academic debates in contemporary Dutch society.
