Book The Salon and English Letters

Download or read book The Salon and English Letters written by Chauncey Brewster Tinker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Salon and English Letters: Chapters on the Interrelations of Literature and Society, in the Age of Johnson So long as letters and society retained this intimate relation and men and manners were deemed the all sufficient study of poets, it was natural that authors should gather in the metropolis. The city was to them 'the true scene for a man of letters'; 'the fountain of intelligence and pleasure, ' the place for 'splendid society, ' and the place where 'a man stored his mind better than anywhere else.' 1 When the old ideal of letters was displaced by a wider and per haps nobler, the supremacy of the metropolis as a literary centre fell with it; but in the Age of Johnson London was still the land of promise, at once a work shop and a club, a discipline and an opportunity. 'a great city is, to be sure, ' said Johnson, 'the school for studying life.' Johnson, Goldsmith, Burke, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, Sheridan, Beattie, Chat terton, Crabbe, Boswell, and many another went up thither, as their predecessors for generations had done, to seek their literary fortune or to enjoy their new established fame. The authors' clubs, hardly less popular than in the days of Anne, indicate an even closer centralization. Book Satire and Romanticism

Download or read book Satire and Romanticism written by S. Jones and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-04-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable study of the constructive and ultimately canon-forming relationship between satiric and Romantic modes of writing from 1760 to 1832 provides us with a new understanding of the historical development of Romanticism as a literary movement. Romantic poetry is conventionally seen as inward-turning, sentimental, sublime, and transcendent, whereas satire, with its public, profane, and topical rhetoric, is commonly cast in the role of generic other as the un-Romantic mode. This book argues instead that the two modes mutually defined each other and were subtly interwoven during the Romantic period. By rearranging reputations, changing aesthetic assumptions, and re-distributing cultural capital, the interaction of satiric and Romantic modes helped make possible the Victorian and modern construction of 'English Romanticism'.

Book Authorship in the Long Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Authorship in the Long Eighteenth Century written by Dustin Griffin and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with changing conditions and conceptions of authorship in the long eighteenth century, a period often said to have witnessed the birth of the modern author. It focuses not on authorial self-presentation or self-revelation but on an author’s interactions with booksellers, collaborators, rivals, correspondents, patrons, and audiences. Challenging older accounts of the development of authorship in the period as well as newer claims about the “public sphere” and the “professional writer,” it engages with recent work on print culture and the history of the book. Methodologically eclectic, it moves from close readings to strategic contextualization. The book is organized both chronologically and topically. Early chapters deal with writers – notably Milton and Dryden – at the beginning of the long eighteenth century, and later chapters focus more on writers — among them Johnson, Gray, and Gibbon — toward its end. Looking beyond the traditional canon, it considers a number of little-known or little-studied writers, including Richard Bentley, Thomas Birch, William Oldys, James Ralph, and Thomas Ruddiman. Some of the essays are organized around a single writer, but most deal with a broad topic – literary collaboration, literary careers, the republic of letters, the alleged rise of the “professional writer,” and the rather different figure of the “author by profession.” Published by University of Delaware Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
