Book The Sage s Tao Te Ching

Download or read book The Sage s Tao Te Ching written by William Martin and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completing the trilogy that began with the Parent's Tao Te Ching (praised as "pure gold" by Hugh Prather) and continued with the Couple's Tao Te Ching ("a singular book," said George Fowler), William Martin now distills and freshly reinterprets the Tao for "sages," or those in the second half of life. As Martin writes, sages are the "primary keepers and transmitters of wisdom, culture, values, and spirituality." Martin's free-verse interpretation captures the ancient spirit of Lao Tzu's text, yet speaks directly to modern readers. The text is accompanied by a visual interpretation of the Tao in more than 50 original ink-brush drawings. Like the Parent's Tao and Couple's Tao before it, the Sage's Tao has the hallmarks of a classic. "You have ceased trying /To tie up all loose ends./You have discovered/That life does not need to be neat/You have more questions than answers,/And this is a great delight to you./You trust the mystery of life/Without having to possess it." - from the book

Book excerpt: The twentieth anniversary edition of William Martin’s free-verse interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, written expressly for those coming into the fullness of their wisdom Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching reminds its readers that the sage has been venerated in China for thousands of years. Twenty years ago, William Martin subtly and powerfully captured the complex emotions connected with growing older in this free-verse interpretation of the Tao. His words resonate just as much now, encouraging today’s sages to recognize their inestimable worth in a youth-centric world that often goes astray: “If there is to be a transformation, it will be the sages among us who will show the way. The elders, the wisewomen, the shamans, the grandmothers, and the grandfathers will provide the guidance, for they have undergone the necessary initiations . . . and emerged into the spaciousness of simplicity, freedom, and joy.”

Will I find in my own heart the wisdom for which I long? This question trumps all others for me. I suspect it is the same for you.”

Book excerpt: In what may be the most faithful translation of the Tao Te Ching, the translators have captured the terse, enigmatic beauty of the original masterpiece without embellishing it with personal interpretation or bogging it down with explanatory notes. By stepping out of the way and letting the original text speak for itself, they deliver a powerfully direct experience of the Tao Te Ching that is a joy to come back to again and again. And for the first time in any translation of the Tao Te Ching, now you can interact with the text to experience for yourself the nuanced art of translating. In each of the eighty-one chapters, one significant line has been highlighted and alongside it are the original Chinese characters with their transliteration. You can then turn to the glossary and translate this line on your own, thereby deepening your understanding of the original text and of the myriad ways it can be translated into English. Complementing the text are twenty-three striking ink paintings brushed by Stephen Addiss and an introduction by the esteemed Asia scholar Burton Watson.

Book excerpt: Tao Te Ching presents the way (Tao) of virtue (Te) in classical Chinese philosophy (Ching). This classic way of virtue is a power for living within principles found throughout nature and all of existence. Abiding in this way brings balance to materially-driven living. It adds Yin to the Yang of modernity. It is the way of sages and saints through all ages. Although impossible in actual practice, an attempt has been made to minimize interpretation while striving for direct translation. The source material is generally attribute to Lao Tzu as presented by Wang Bi. Fortunately, there is no one definitive presentation of Tao Te Ching. In this volume, punctuation is minimized so that the reader may play with multiple ways of phrasing. The resulting ambiguity can become a rich source for a variety of insights. It is antithetical to the Tao to analyze it, or to apply scholarship to it. No context need be applied; the Tao is its own context. If portions of the text seem to make little sense, remember that nothing in life makes complete sense. Just move slowly through it. Abide in it. Internalize it little by little. Try living it. Enjoy it.

Download or read book The Activist s Tao Te Ching written by William Martin and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[An] inspiration.” — Alice Walker, The New York Times Book Review Change and anger are in the air. Looking for answers to today’s wrenching challenges, William Martin turns to the Tao Te Ching and finds that while Taoism is known for its quiet, enigmatic wisdom, the Tao can also have the cleansing force of a rushing river. Through his interpretation of this ancient Chinese text, Martin elucidates revolutionary messages condemning power-seeking and greed. He emphasizes that humans have a “natural virtue” that can help them heal the planet; shows how Taoism’s simplicity can be subversive and its flexibility a potent force; and reassures that “when injustice is the rule, justice always lies in wait.” Provocative and stirring, Martin’s Tao flows within and through those who ride the waves of anger and frustration and gently guides them to true freedom. “We have learned the secret of transformation: Injustice feeds our determination. Hate increases our love. Wounds bring forth our healing, and fear uncovers our courage and serenity.” — from The Activist’s Tao Te Ching
