Book excerpt: As the particular object of this Essay is limited to 8 consideration of the Eucharist in its sacrificial character, it is not my intention to enter with any detailed proof into the question of the Real Presence and Transubstantiation. These doctrines are undoubtedly 8 necessary basis to that of the Sacrifice, but since they have been treated of with great erudition and copiousness in many English works of controversy, to them, being easily accessible, I beg to refer those of my readers who require a complete exposition of that part of the subject. It will be sufficient for my present purpose to adduce S. Paul in proof that the real Body and Blood of Christ were made present by virtue of the words Qf our Lord. He declares that the bread which he broke was 8 'partaking of the Body of the Lord,' and the chalice 8 'communion of the Blood of Christ' (1 Cor. x.16); also, that those who partook unworthily of that bread. and that chalice were 'guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord,' and did not' discern the Body of the Lord' (1 Cor. xi. 27-9). He says, moreover, that communicants, although numerically 'many,' become 'one bread----one body' by 'partaking of the Body of the Lord' (1 Cor. x. 17). The whole point of S. Paul's argument would be utterly lost, his parallel unmeaning, and his denunciation aimless, if the real Body and Blood of Christ were not in the Eucharist. How could anyone be justly punished by sickness and death, therefore there are many infirm and weak among you, and many sleep' (1 Cor. xi. 20)-for not discerning an absent Body? How could men be 'guilty of the Body and Blood of Christ,' if the figure alone of Christ was there, and if that figure was only bread? How also can anyone be truly described as partaking of the Body and Blood of the Lord, through the reception of the consecrated bread and consecrated chalice, if that bread which 'is broken,' and that chalice so communicated, conveys no Body and no Blood of Christ? The Apostle was inspired, erudite, and not a mocking sophist; and yet, if the Protestant explanation be true, he could not, if he had tried, have used language more calculated to mislead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first English translation represents Sergius Bulgakov’s final, fully developed word on the Eucharist. The debate around the controversial doctrine of the Eucharist as sacrifice has dogged relations between Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches since the Reformation. In The Eucharistic Sacrifice, the famous Russian theologian Sergius Bulgakov cuts through long-standing polemics surrounding the notion of the Eucharist as sacrifice and offers a stunningly original intervention rooted in his distinctive theological vision. This work, written in 1940, belongs to Bulgakov’s late period and is his last, and most discerning, word on eucharistic theology. His primary thesis is that the Eucharist is an extension of the sacrificial, self-giving love of God in the Trinity, or what he famously refers to as kenosis. Throughout the book, Bulgakov points to the fact that, although the eucharistic sacrifice at the Last Supper took place in time before the actual crucifixion of Christ, both events are part of a single act that occurs outside of time. This is Bulgakov’s concluding volume of three works on the Eucharist. The other two, The Eucharistic Dogma and The Holy Grail, were translated and published together in 1997. This third volume was only first published in the original Russian version in 2005 and has remained unavailable in English until now. The introduction provides a brief history of Bulgakov’s theological career and a description of the structure of The Eucharistic Sacrifice. This clear and accessible translation will appeal to scholars and students of theology, ecumenism, and Russian religious thought.

Book The Eucharist in the West

Download or read book The Eucharist in the West written by Edward J. Kilmartin and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of its own history, the Catholic theology of the Eucharist, as it is generally understood today, is revealed as a splinter tradition whose deficiencies call for fundamental reformulation. The valid aspects of that theology (for example, the recovery of the role of the Holy Spirit in the new Roman Eucharistic Prayers) must be identified and integrated with the faith and practice of the first theological millennium when the lex orandi was not so dominated by the lex credendi. In the third theological millennium, more attention to the content and structure of the classical Eucharistic Prayers of both East and West will result in a Catholic systematic theology of eucharistic sacrifice that is not only truer to its biblical and patristic foundations but also - of ecumenical import - closer to some of the theological insights of the Protestant Reformers. These highlights of The Eucharist in the West illustrate the great value of this posthumous work. Conceptually complete, but in only rough draft form at the time of Father Kilmartin's death, it has been edited and prepared for publication by Robert J. Daly, SJ Chapter one describes the characteristics of the eucharistic theology of the Western Latin Fathers. Chapter two identifies the more important orientations and developments of the Catholic tradition from early medieval Scholasticism up to the first part of the twelfth century. Chapter three singles out the special contribution of early Scholasticism to Latin eucharistic theology. Chapter four functions as a bridge from early Scholasticism to high Scholasticism by outlining the general approach to a synthetic theology of the Eucharist which was obtained at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Chapter five treats eucharistic theology from high Scholasticism to the Council of Trent. Chapter six summarizes the dogmatic teaching of the Council of Trent. This is followed in Chapter seven, by a treatment of salient features of post-Tridentine Eucharistic theology. Chapter eight includes an analysis of the practice and theology of Mass stipends. Chapter nine includes a detailed analysis of Aquinas's theology of the eucharistic sacrifice. Chapter ten offers an account of some recent contributions to the formulation of a theology of the eucharistic sacrifice which have contributed to the modern average Roman Catholic synthesis. Robert J. Daly, SJ, is a professor of theology at Boston College and former editor of Theological Studies. Edward J. Kilmartin, SJ (1923-1994), professor for liturgical theology at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, taught theology first at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and later at Boston College. He served as director of the doctoral program in liturgical studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Book excerpt: For over 2,000 years the Catholic Church has been celebrating the Eucharist as the source and summit of the Christian Faith and it is still one of the most divisive doctrines separating Catholics and Protestants today. Author, lawyer, and a leading defender of the Faith, John Salza, unpacks this pillar of the Catholic Faith in the same clear, engaging style that has drawn thousands of readers to his other works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the doctrine of the Catholic Church most baffling to Protestants and the hardest to accept is her teaching on the Eucharist as both a sacrament and (especially) as the actual Body and Blood of Christ as he offered it on the Cross. But what does the Catholic Church really mean by what she teaches about the Eucharist as opposed to what many have supposed her to mean by it? Does the Catholic teaching have any foundation in the Bible? Did Christ himself say anything about the Eucharist? Is the Eucharist only a symbol; or is it, in the Sacrifice of the Mass, the actual Body and Blood of Christ for our salvation? These questions and others are answered for the Protestant inquirer in this book, which the author hopes will at the very least help the reader to understand that what the Catholic Church believes about the Eucharist is not an invention but is rooted in a profound understanding of the Scriptures.
