Book excerpt: "Patrician looking but not patrician born, Musmanno was a self-made man memorable in his appearance and congenial to the times until his intentions and aspirations ran afoul of the circumstances. From his journals we see a man of extreme contradictions who sometimes exercised troubling and even controlling relationships over people and events"--

Book The Worlds Educators Create

Download or read book The Worlds Educators Create written by Matthew A. Clay and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between place and education has always been complicated and in recent decades has mostly been ignored during the standardization era of education. This book provides a different lens to view this connection between place and education as one that is not optional, but inherent to all education. Furthermore, place is looked at not as an ingredient in educational practice, but as an outcome of education. Instead of merely considering how communities and landscapes can be incorporated into teaching practices, The Worlds Educators Create explores how educators can contribute toward the creation and meaning of the places themselves. By incorporating lenses from many fields of study, this book aims to create a unifying perspective of place beneficial for educators across content areas and grade levels. In so doing, educators are able to see the true impact of their work in shaping the places around them. Ultimately, The Worlds Educators Create calls for education to not merely occur in places, but contribute toward making the places themselves more just and equitable.

Book The Press the Rosenbergs and the Cold War

Download or read book The Press the Rosenbergs and the Cold War written by John Neville and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-09-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of cold war agenda setting in relation to the Julius and Ethel Rosenberg spy case. Its primary interest is with press coverage of the case from 1950 to 1953, although the historical focus of the case extends before and beyond those years. The purpose of the book is not to debate the Rosenbergs' guilt or innocence, but rather to provide a fresh view of the case in its most political terms: news coverage filtered through the dynamics of cold war patriotism. A large sample of U.S. and foreign newspapers and magazines was monitored to determine if the Rosenbergs were victims of sensational pretrial and during-trial newspaper publicity. Neville also determines if the press reported on the claims of a U.S. left-wing newspaper, the National Guardian, that the Rosenbergs were framed by the U.S. government with the complicity of the news media. His conclusions question whether the mainstream press and news media ignore issues of justice for radicals in time of war and political crisis.

Book The Sacco Vanzetti Case

Book excerpt: On April 15, 1920, a band of five armed robbers made off with the payroll of a South Braintree, Mass. shoe company, shooting dead the guard (Alessandro Berardelli) and the paymaster (Frederick Albert Parmenter). Two Italian extremists, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were charged on May 5, 1920, with the murders; indicted on September 14, 1920; and brought to trial in the Superior Court at Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, Judge Webster Thayer presiding. A verict of guilty was rendered but sentence was not pronounced until April 9, 1927. Following a worldwide outcry of injustice, Governor Alvan Fuller appointed an independent commission to advise him of the fairness of the trial. The commission's members were Abbot Lawrence Lowell, Pres. of Harvard University, Judge Robert Grant, and President Samuel W. Stratton. In Nov. 1925 Celestino Medeiros, a young Portugese, confessed to the crime. A motion based on Medeiros' statement was argued before Judge Thayer, who denied it. On Aug. 22, 1927, Sacco and Vanzetti were executed.
