Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Bitter Choices written by Michael Khodarkovsky and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia’s attempt to consolidate its authority in the North Caucasus has exerted a terrible price on both sides since the mid-nineteenth century. Michael Khodarkovsky tells a concise and compelling history of the mountainous region between the Black and Caspian seas during the centuries of Russia’s long conquest (1500–1850s). The history of the region unfolds against the background of one man’s life story, Semën Atarshchikov (1807–1845). Torn between his Chechen identity and his duties as a lieutenant and translator in the Russian army, Atarshchikov defected, not once but twice, to join the mountaineers against the invading Russian troops. His was the experience more typical of Russia’s empire-building in the borderlands than the better known stories of the audacious kidnappers and valiant battles. It is a history of the North Caucasus as seen from both sides of the conflict, which continues to make this region Russia’s most violent and vulnerable frontier.

Book Stalin s General

Download or read book Stalin s General written by Geoffrey Roberts and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the most accomplished general of World War II, the Soviet military legend Marshal Georgy Zhukov at last gets the full-scale biographical treatment he has long deserved. A man of indomitable will and fierce determination, Georgy Zhukov was the Soviet Union’s indispensable commander through every one of the critical turning points of World War II. It was Zhukov who saved Leningrad from capture by the Wehrmacht in September 1941, Zhukov who led the defense of Moscow in October 1941, Zhukov who spearheaded the Red Army’s march on Berlin and formally accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender in the spring of 1945. Drawing on the latest research from recently opened Soviet archives, including the uncensored versions of Zhukov’s own memoirs, Roberts offers a vivid portrait of a man whose tactical brilliance was matched only by the cold-blooded ruthlessness with which he pursued his battlefield objectives. After the war, Zhukov was a key player on the geopolitical scene. As Khrushchev’s defense minister, he was one of the architects of Soviet military strategy during the Cold War. While lauded in the West as a folk hero—he was the only Soviet general ever to appear on the cover of Time magazine—Zhukov repeatedly ran afoul of the Communist political authorities. Wrongfully accused of disloyalty, he was twice banished and erased from his country’s official history—left out of books and paintings depicting Soviet World War II victories. Piercing the hyperbole of the Zhukov personality cult, Roberts debunks many of the myths that have sprung up around Zhukov’s life and career to deliver fresh insights into the marshal’s relationships with Stalin, Khrushchev, and Eisenhower. A remarkably intimate portrait of a man whose life was lived behind an Iron Curtain of official secrecy, Stalin’s General is an authoritative biography that restores Zhukov to his rightful place in the twentieth-century military pantheon.

Download or read book Zhukov written by Otto Preston Chaney and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshal Georgi Konstantinovich Zhukov, hero of Leningrad, defender of Moscow and Stalingrad, commander of the victorious Red Army at Berlin, was the most decorated soldier in Soviet history. Yet for many years Zhukov was relegated to the status of "unperson" in his homeland. Now, following glasnost and the fall of the Soviet Union, Zhukov is being restored to his rightful place in history. In this completely updated version of his classic 1971 biography of Zhukov, Otto Preston Chaney provides the definitive account of the man and his achievements. Zhukov’s career spanned most of the Soviet period, reflecting the turmoil of the civil war, the hardships endured by the Russian people in World War II, the brief postwar optimism evidenced by the friendship between Zhukov and Eisenhower, repression in Poland and Hungary, and the rise and fall of such political figures as Stalin, Beria, and Krushchev. The story of Russia’s greatest soldier thus offers many insights into the history of the Soviet Union itself.

Book Confrontational and Cooperative Regional Orders

Download or read book Confrontational and Cooperative Regional Orders written by Ariel Gonzalez Levaggi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains cooperative and confrontational regional orders in the post-Cold War era. Applying a push-and-pull framework to the evolution of regional orders, the book’s theoretical section compares regional dynamics and studies the transformation and authority of governing arrangements among key regional actors who manage security and institutional cooperation. This presents a novel approach to comparing non-Western regional orders, and helps forge a better integration between International Relations disciplinary approaches and area studies. The empirical section analyzes Central Eurasia and South America within the period 1989-2017, using case studies and interviews with decision-makers, practitioners and experts. The volume demonstrates that soft engagement strategies from extra-regional great powers and internationalist domestic coalitions framed in a stable democratic polity are forces for peaceful interaction, while hard engagement strategies from great external powers plus nationalist coalitions within democratic backsliding in key regional powers present negative outlooks for regional cooperation. This book will be of much interest to students of regional security, comparative politics, area studies and International Relations.

Book Shtorm

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicólas Martínez
  • Publisher : The Little French eBooks
  • Release : 2024-09-23
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 491 pages

Download or read book Shtorm written by Nicólas Martínez and published by The Little French eBooks. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shtorm" plunges us into a gripping narrative, fueled by a cocktail of artificial intelligence, hypersonic weapons, disinformation campaigns, cybercrime, and the specter of mutually assured destruction. The plot, set against a backdrop of rancor, hatred, envy, egos, and ambitions, unfolds amidst a relentless cat-and-mouse game between European capitals and remote terrorist camps. The novel offers a chilling portrayal of a hybrid war, complete with bombings, assassinations, missile attacks, and a relentless offensive by spies and intelligence specialists operating within renowned European and global information agencies. The narrative is fast-paced, dramatic, and accessible, with precise terminology that avoids unnecessary jargon. The author's argument is both timely and alarming. In a December 2021 article, Spanish journalist Ricardo Angoso raised a crucial question: "Is there a risk of a war between Russia and Ukraine?" His answer was a sobering one: "It is clear that there is, but whoever ignites this conflict will jeopardize the stability and security of the European continent for years to come, ushering in a new cold war with unpredictable consequences for all." A systematic understanding of the dynamics driving this situation is essential to assess probabilities, possibilities, and potential solutions. By gaining a clearer perspective, we can hope that in 2024, Europe and the world will be a more harmonious place, free from the global survival challenges depicted in "Shtorm."

Book Historical Dictionary of the Russian Civil Wars 1916 1926

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Russian Civil Wars 1916 1926 written by Jonathan D. Smele and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 1471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed reference of the twentieth century struggles that were waged across and beyond the decaying Russian Empire at the end of the First World War, as tsarism and democratic alternatives to it collapsed and the world’s first Communist state, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was born. At the same time, it is a necessary corrective to studies that have viewed events of the time as a unitary “Russian Civil War” that sprang from the Russian Revolution of 1917. Instead, it contributes to the ongoing process of integrating the civil wars into a “continuum of crises” that wracked the Russian Empire and its would-be successor states across a prolonged period. The Historical Dictionary of the Russian Civil Wars, 1916-1926 covers the history of this period through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has almost 2,000 cross-referenced entries on individuals, political and governmental institutions and political parties, and military formations and concepts, as well as religion, art, film, propaganda, uniforms, and weaponry. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Russian Civil War.
