Book The Church in Post Sixties New Zealand

Download or read book The Church in Post Sixties New Zealand written by Kevin Ward and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that over the past 50 years the church in New Zealand has been experiencing steady and persistent decline. Some have foreseen its virtual demise while most see its influence in society becoming almost insignificant. This book examines how true this narrative is among Protestant churches in New Zealand, and by placing it in the context of other similar western societies, seeks to come to some understanding of the factors which might explain this and what the implications for the future of churches and Christianity might be. It also examines churches which have countered this trend by showing vitality and growth over this period to see what might be learned from them for a more vital Christian presence in the future. Part of the story is told by focussing on the particular stories of four different kinds of churches in Christchurch.

Book Sunday Best

Download or read book Sunday Best written by Peter Lineham and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early arrival of the missionaries in Aotearoa set the scene for a new moral colony that would be founded on religious precepts and modern Christian beliefs. It did not take long for a combination of circumstances to confound the aspirations of the Church Missionary Society, the Church in Rome and all those who followed. Historian Peter Lineham examines Christianity in New Zealand through the lens of cultural development, and asks: If the various denominations and faiths set out to shape New Zealand, how did the very fluid fact of New Zealand change those faiths?

Book Safari Based Theology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. Enos Lwamba
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2012-12-21
  • ISBN : 1477288414
  • Pages : 469 pages

Download or read book Safari Based Theology written by Dr. Enos Lwamba and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Safari-based Theology Dr. Enos Lwamba has developed an approach to theology and mission based on his proposed safari motif for the development of theology and mission. Based on his Ph.D. dissertation: The Safari Motif in the Development of Theology in Africa, Dr. Lwamba argues that God has used a series of divine redemptive safaris in the Bible to reveal Himself progressively to people. The author develops his proposed motif around a tri-dimensional conception of reality and time and explores a threefold aspect of the safari: mwanzo, sasa, and mwisho, which provide keys to the African mindset. He explores the various meanings and uses of the safari idea from both a biblical and theological perspective. In addition to the literal safaris, journey is an analogy of the church and believers are on a divine safari, individually and collectively. The safari model highlights the absolute necessity of the biblical message and the contextual situation to help Christians live effective and fruitful lives in society now and in future. Inspired by both John Mbitis The African Concept of Time and Paul Hieberts The Flaw of the Excluded Middle, the author utilizes biblical, theological, historical, and contextual sources to make his point. In the philosophical aspect of the safari, the author develops his notion of an African conception of time modeled on the cultural safari idea which he relates to development of theology and mission. He refutes the western influenced or commercially based notion that safari refers to a game hunting or tourist expedition to Africa. Dr. Lwamba promotes the argument that the philosophical framework and methodology drawn from the safari approach provides a more effective way of doing theology and mission in Africa and other contextual situations. He also draws parallels to the safari concept from such sources as Augustines City of God, John Bunyans The Pilgrims Progress and others in a refreshing and original style that the reader will find engaging. The motif provides interpretational and practical application tools as it harmonizes the unity of the biblical message. Its practical appeal makes Safari-Based Theology a must read for Christians and others interested in their daily journey of faith. The author contends that just as the idea of logos described the mindset, conception of divine truth, and aspirations of the Greek mind, the concept of safari does the same for the African. This book is highly recommended for pastors, missionaries, and teachers, as well as students of Bible and theology, culture and missions, and other related disciplines.

Book The Holy Spirit as Person and Power

Download or read book The Holy Spirit as Person and Power written by Rob Yule and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just over one hundred years, the Pentecostal-charismatic movement has transformed world Christianity. Noted for their rediscovery of spiritual gifts and commitment to world evangelization, 700 million Pentecostals and charismatics now account for more than 27 percent of the global Christian movement. The Pentecostal-charismatic movement has been more noted for its activism than for theological reflection. But this may be changing. The Holy Spirit as Person and Power challenges traditional theology to take account of what has been disclosed in the dynamism and variety of charismatic experience. The author is a theologically trained practitioner, impacted in midlife by a transforming experience of the Holy Spirit. He has been a hands-on leader in the renewal movement. Now, in his later years, he reflects on the meaning of the grace imparted to the church by the renewing activity of God's Spirit. This is not the work of an enthusiast claiming a new revelation. Rather, the author draws attention to many nuances in the Bible's description of the Spirit that have been overlooked in traditional pneumatology. By relating these insights to Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and evangelical theology, he has produced a book with ecumenical implications for all branches of world Christianity.
