Book Towards Socialist Democracy

Download or read book Towards Socialist Democracy written by Martin Legassick and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards Socialist Democracy is written for those engaged in struggles against capitalism around the world. It examines the history of the struggle for socialism in the 20th century, and draws on the lessons of the bureaucratic usurpation of the Russian workers' revolution, and of the revolutions that put a bureaucracy in power in China, Cuba, and other countries. Outlining the conditions of wealth and poverty in the world economy today, and looking briefly at recent uprisings in Latin America, the book argues that socialism is still a necessity which can only be achieved through nationalizing the economy under workers' control and management on an international scale. It explores the history of the battle for national and social liberation in South Africa, from the 1920s through the 1980s, and critically examines the policies of the leadership of the South African Communist Party. Finally, it reviews the economic record of the ANC (African National Congress) government since 1994 and stresses the need for a mass workers' party in South Africa to take up the struggle for national, and international, social justice and socialism.

Book Marxisms in the 21st Century

Download or read book Marxisms in the 21st Century written by Michelle Williams and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current resurgence of Marxism is based on new sources of inspiration and creativity from movements that seek democratic, egalitarian and ecological alternatives to capitalism. The Marxism of many of these movements is neither dogmatic nor prescriptive, but rather, open, searching, utopian. It revolves around four primary factors: the importance of democracy for an emancipatory project; the ecological limits of capitalism; the crisis of global capitalism; and the learning of lessons from the failures of Marxist-inspired experiments. Marxisms in the Twenty-First Century challenges vanguardist Marxism featured in South Africa and beyond. Featuring leading thinkers from the Left, the book offers provocative ideas on interpreting our current world and serves as an excellent introduction to new ways of thinking about Marxism to students and scholars in the field. Many anti-capitalist traditions and themes - including democracy, globalisation, feminism, critique and ecology inform and shape the contributions in this volume.

Book Countdown to Socialism

Download or read book Countdown to Socialism written by Anthea Jeffery and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With growth stalling, joblessness at crisis levels, and governance unravelling, most South Africans cannot fathom why the ANC does not embark on meaningful reform. The answer lies in what is seldom raised: the ruling party’s unwavering determination to take the country by incremental steps from capitalism to socialism. This transformation is being implemented via a Moscow-inspired ‘national democratic revolution’ (NDR) dating back many decades. Despite the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, the ANC/SACP alliance still sees the NDR as offering the ‘most direct route’ to socialism in South Africa – and hence as its bedrock strategy. The NDR has been implemented in many different spheres since 1994. By way of example, NDR interventions have already made millions of people unemployable and the mining sector largely ‘uninvestable."--

Book Armed Struggle and Democracy

Download or read book Armed Struggle and Democracy written by Martin Legassick and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2002 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of the concept(s) of armed struggle for the notion(s) of democracy in South(ern) Africa is the focus of this paper. Originally submitted to a conference on (Re-) Conceptualising Democracy and Liberation in Southern Africa, held in Windhoek, Namibia during July 2002, it argues from the point of departure of the personal involvement of the author in the issues raised. The author was part of a group which criticised the strategy of armed struggle in the ANC. With this paper he inspires a debate, which can claim relevance for current issues of democracy in South Africa and the Southern African region more generally. Given the degree of personal involvement of its author, this analysis is contemporary history based on personal insights, and provides arguments for a necessary discussion.

Book The Unresolved National Question in South Africa

Download or read book The Unresolved National Question in South Africa written by Edward Webster and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the way in which various strands of left thought have addressed the National Question. The re-emergence of debates on the decolonisation of knowledge has revived interest in the National Question, which began over a century ago and remains unresolved. Tensions that were suppressed and hidden in the past are now being openly debated. Despite this, the goal of one united nation living prosperously under a constitutional democracy remains elusive. This edited volume examines the way in which various strands of left thought have addressed the National Question, especially during the apartheid years, and goes on to discuss its relevance for South Africa today and in the future. Instead of imposing a particular understanding of the National Question, the editors identified a number of political traditions and allowed contributors the freedom to define the question as they believed appropriate - in other words, to explain what they thought was the Unresolved National Question. This has resulted in a rich tapestry of interweaving perceptions. The volume is structured in two parts. The first examines four foundational traditions: Marxism-Leninism (the Colonialism of a Special Type thesis); the Congress tradition; the Trotskyist tradition; and Africanism. The second part explores the various shifts in the debate from the 1960s onwards, and includes chapters on Afrikaner nationalism, ethnic issues, black consciousness, feminism, workerism and constitutionalism. The editors hope that by revisiting the debates not popularly known among the scholarly mainstream, this volume will become a catalyst for an enriched debate on our identity and our future.
