Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rutgers University’s Douglass Residential College is the only college for women that is nested within a major public research university in the United States. Although the number of women’s colleges has plummeted from a high of 268 in 1960 to 38 in 2016, Douglass is flourishing as it approaches its centennial in 2018. To explore its rich history, Kayo Denda, Mary Hawkesworth, Fernanda H. Perrone examine the strategic transformation of Douglass over the past century in relation to continuing debates about women’s higher education. The Douglass Century celebrates the college’s longevity and diversity as distinctive accomplishments, and analyzes the contributions of Douglass administrators, alumnae, and students to its survival, while also investigating multiple challenges that threatened its existence. This book demonstrates how changing historical circumstances altered the possibilities for women and the content of higher education, comparing the Jazz Age, American the Great Depression, the Second World War, the post-war Civil Rights era, and the resurgence of feminism in the 1970s and 1980s. Concluding in the present day, the authors highlight the college’s ongoing commitment to Mabel Smith Douglass’ founding vision, “to bring about an intellectual quickening, a cultural broadening in connection with specific training so that women may go out into the world fitted...for leadership...in the economic, political, and intellectual life of this nation.” In addition to providing a comprehensive history of the college, the book brings its subjects to life with eighty full-color images from the Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.

Book The Rutgers University College of Pharmacy

Download or read book The Rutgers University College of Pharmacy written by Roy A. Bowers and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The College of Pharmacy at Rutgers University is exemplary of the proprietary schools that flowered during the late nineteenth century. In this instance, the College evolved into an integral part of a major state university, despite frustrations and travail. Only a dozen colleges of pharmacy have had their histories analyzed so extensively. Such histories hold enduring value for succeeding generations of alumni and faculty; moreover, they add to the growing mosaic of evidence out of which, someday, can be synthesized a national history of pharmacy and pharmaceutical education. The present work should serve as a stimulus and model for others."ÐÐfrom the Foreword by Glenn Sonnedecker, former Director, American Institute of the History of Pharmacy This history of the Rutgers College of Pharmacy is a history of pharmaceutical education as it unfolded in New Jersey. The authors have related the Rutgers experience not only to national developments in education, but also to developments in the pharmaceutical sciences and to the changing pharmaceutical practices in the nation and the state.

This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Chemistry Concepts and Applications for Medicinal Chemistry provides a valuable refresher for understanding the relationship between chemical bonding and those molecular properties that help to determine medicinal activity. This book explores the basic aspects of structural organic chemistry without going into the various classes of reactions. Two medicinal chemistry concepts are also introduced: partition coefficients and the nomenclature of cyclic and polycyclic ring systems that comprise a large number of drug molecules. Given the systematic name of a drug, the reader is guided through the process of drawing an accurate chemical structure. By emphasizing the relationship between structure and properties, this book gives readers the connections to more fully comprehend, retain, apply, and build upon their organic chemistry background in further chemistry study, practice, and exams. - Focused approach to review those organic chemistry concepts that are most important for medicinal chemistry practice and understanding - Accessible content to refresh the reader's knowledge of bonding, structure, functional groups, stereochemistry, and more - Appropriate level of coverage for students in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and related areas; individuals seeking content review for graduate and medical courses and exams; pharmaceutical patent attorneys; and chemists and scientists requiring a review of pertinent material

This surprising—and engagingly written—book details the school’s transformation from a second-rate institution to an internationally recognized program. Beyond being the first public university chartered in the state, the University of Mississippi has a long history of innovative thinking. Near the beginning of the twentieth century, the Mississippi State legislature recognized the need to adequately oversee those individuals who would dispense medicines. So, in 1908, the University of Mississippi established its pharmaceutical department and set on a course of improving educational standards for students of pharmacy.
