Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Spans the period from World War II to the present during which Rutgers grew from two small, liberal arts colleges, an agricultural school, and an engineering school into a major public research university. We chronicle the remarkable story of Rutgers's rise as a research university, but also the way the school has been experienced by generations or students and residents of the state. The Cold War, the student protests of the 1960s and the 1970s, the rise of identity politics on campus, big-time athletics, and the various ways students have shaped and been affected by popular culture all play a part in this story. Three chapters cover chronologically the major changes that occurred at the university between 1945 and the present, bringing up to date the work done in Richard P. McCormick's, Rutgers, A Bicentennial History (1966). The remaining chapters provide snapshots of some of the key themes in the contemporary history of the school -- campus life and campus activism, the school's growing strength as a research institution, the impact of Title IX on opportunities for women student athletes, the school's public presence as reflected in such long-standing institutions as the University Press, the Glee Club, and undergraduate journalism. Rutgers current residence halls, which house more students than at any other college in the nation, are the subject of a imaginatively illustrated, architectural analysis While much of the focus of our study is on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus, attention has been paid throughout to Camden and Newark as well"--

Book Printmaking in America

Download or read book Printmaking in America written by Trudy V. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1995-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years from 1960 to 1990 witnessed an extraordinary outburst of creative activity among American printmakers. A number of important new workshops were founded, from such influential studios as Universal Limited Art Editions as Long Island and the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles to small presses throughout the country. In contrast to traditional European ateliers, where professional printers reproduced artists' designs for commercial edition printing, the new American workshops stressed collaboration, and emphasized radical experimentation with medium and process. The work produced in these studios often owed as much to the imaginative gifts of the printer as the conception of the artist.

Book excerpt: In 1985, winemaker Joe Benziger and Sonoma artist Bob Nugent struck on the idea of putting original art on special releases of Imagery Estate wines. The goal was straight-forward: commission the world's modern art luminaries to create works for reproduction onto wine labels. Two decades and 160 labels later, they have assembled a staggering collection of contemporary art, from the likes of Sol Lewitt, Terry Winters, Nancy Graves, John Baldessari, Judy Pfaff, and Bob Arneson. This book highlights 133 works of art, the best of the Imagery collection. The images are big and lush, and accompanied by biographical sketches of the artists' careers, as well as a short description of their individual ideas and methods. The pictorial index shows the works in their label-form, from 1985 to the most recent vintages. These images are evocations of wine's multi-faceted ability to inspire us.

Book The Brodsky Center at Rutgers University

Download or read book The Brodsky Center at Rutgers University written by Ferris Olin and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brodsky Center at Rutgers: Three Decades, 1986-2017, chronicles the history and artists involved with an internationally acclaimed print and papermaking studio at Rutgers University. Judith K. Brodsky conceived, founded, and directed the atelier, which, from its onset, provided state-of-the-arts technology and expertise for under-represented contemporary artists — women, Indigenous, and from diasporas of the African, Eastern European, Latin and Asian communities — to make innovative works on paper. These artistic creations presented new narratives to American and global visual arts from voices previously not heard or seen. Some of the artists featured in the book include Faith Ringgold, Elizabeth Catlett, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Miriam Schapiro, Pepón Osorio, Kiki Smith, and Richard Tuttle, among many other talented and influential printmakers and artists. Published in partnership with the Zimmerli Museum.
