Download or read book The Russian Peasantry Vol 1 written by S. Stepniak and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Peasantry, Vol. 1: Their Agrarian Condition, Social Life, and Religion Our peasants have in fact something unusual about them. They have not lived upon the crumbs of intellectual food which have fallen from the tables of their cultured brethren. Their popular morals, their social aims, and their reli gion are all their own, and differ greatly from those prevailing with the upper classes. For the present generation the study of popular life has acquired an exceptional interest and importance, as the manifold influences of the new times have wrought a general downfall of the very basis of rural life. Russian peasants are passing through an actual crisis - economical, social, and religious - and the future of our country depends upon its solution. Book Peasants in Russia from Serfdom to Stalin

Download or read book Peasants in Russia from Serfdom to Stalin written by Boris B. Gorshkov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peasantry accounted for the large majority of the Russian population during the Imperialist and Stalinist periods – it is, for the most part, how people lived. Peasants in Russia from Serfdom to Stalin provides a comprehensive, realistic examination of peasant life in Russia during both these eras and the legacy this left in the post-Soviet era. The book paints a full picture of peasant involvement in commerce and local political life and, through Boris Gorshkov's original ecology paradigm for understanding peasant life, offers new perspectives on the Russian peasantry under serfdom and the emancipation. Incorporating recent scholarship, including Russian and non-Russian texts, along with classic studies, Gorshkov explores the complex interrelationships between the physical environment, peasant economic and social practices, culture, state policies and lord-peasant relations. He goes on to analyze peasant economic activities, including agriculture and livestock, social activities and the functioning of peasant social and political institutions within the context of these interrelationships. Further reading lists, study questions, tables, maps, primary source extracts and images are also included to support and enhance the text wherever possible. Peasants in Russia from Serfdom to Stalin is the crucial survey of a key topic in modern Russian history for students and scholars alike.

It became the first of a series of bloody landmarks that would come to define Stalinism. This revelatory book presents—with analysis and commentary—the most important primary Soviet documents dealing with the brutal economic and cultural subjugation of the Russian peasantry. Drawn from previously unavailable and in many cases unknown archives, these harrowing documents provide the first unimpeded view of the experience of the peasantry during the years 1927-1930.The book, the first of four in the series, covers the background of collectivization, its violent implementation, and the mass peasant revolt that ensued. For its insights into the horrific fate of the Russian peasantry and into Stalin’s dictatorship, The War Against the Peasantry takes its place an as unparalleled resource.

Book The Russian Peasantry Their Agrarian Condition Social Life and Religion

Download or read book The Russian Peasantry Their Agrarian Condition Social Life and Religion written by S. Stepniak and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ... THE RUSSIAN AGRARIAN QUESTION. CHAPTER I. In all European countries the agrarian question is of great moment, but in none does it possess the same interest and importance as in Russia. Here the agricultural class constitutes eighty-two per cent. of the entire population--equal for European Russia, exclusive of Finland and Poland, to about sixty-three million souls. Ireland alone, with seventy-three per cent. of her population engaged in husbandry, approaches at some distance this figure. Russia is, and most undoubtedly for many years remain, a peasant State in the fullest acceptation of the term. With us, therefore, the agrarian question is the national question, and agrarian concerns are national concerns, all others being dependent on and subservient to them. The tillers of the soil--our moujiks--must of necessity become the chief figures in our social and political life. On the monjik rests the financial, military, and political power of the State, as well as its interior cohesion and prosperity. The inclinations, ideals, and aspirations of the moujiks will also play the principal part in the remoulding of Russia's future. For all interested in polities--statesmen and administrators, writers and scholars--the moujik must be the prime object of study, observation, and investigation, as well as of practical manipulation. For the same reasons the Russian moujik has always attracted the attention of observant travellers who have desired to make known to English-speaking readers the agrarian conditions of this strange country, of which so much is said and so little known. There are few among educated foreigners who have not heard of the self-governing, semirepublican tnir and the somewhat communistic Russian system of land tenure, with its...

Book The World of the Russian Peasant

Download or read book The World of the Russian Peasant written by Ben Eklof and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990 The World of the Russian Peasant is designed to provide a wide-ranging survey of new developments in Russian peasant studies. Editors Eklof and Frank paint a broad picture of what life was like for the vast majority of Russia’s population before 1917. Individual authors treat the intricacies of the village community and peasant commune, social structure, the everyday life and labour of peasant women, the impact of migration, the spread of education, and peasant art, religion, justice, and politics. The result is a portrait of a people greatly influenced by rapid and radical changes in the world yet seeking to maintain control over their lives and their communities. This is a must read for students of Russian history, Russian peasantry and rural sociology.
