Download or read book The Russian Peasant and the Revolution written by Maurice G. Hindus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Peasant and the Revolution The Russian Revolution came at the wrong hour. It should have come before or after the war, but not in the midst of it. While the war lasted, we were so passionately engrossed in it, that we were not prepared to tolerate anything that was likely to interfere with our military success. That was quite natural. The war loomed as the biggest thing in our life. We felt that everything we respected, loved and enjoyed would be annihilated, unless we smashed the threatening force. As long, therefore, as the Russian Revolution appeared to us to be a gain for our cause, - as it had in the early days, when we imagined that it was essentially a revolt against the pro-Germain oligarchy - we sang hymns of praise to it. But when it became apparent that the Revolution was much more than that, that it was a rebellion against the entire social order which the old regime had reared, and that instead of strengthening, it had actually weakened Russia's military power, we grew suspicious and wroth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Russian Revolution In 1917 the social and economic fabric of the land was shot to pieces. Ten million peasants dragged from their ploughs were dying in the trenches. Millions more were perishing of cold and hunger in the cities While the corrupt ministers intrigued with the Germans and the court held bacchanalian revels with the notorious monk, Rasputin. Even the Cadet, Milyukov, was forced to say: History does not know Of another govern ment so stupid, so dishonest, so cowardly, so treacherous. All governments rest Upon the patience Of the poor. It seems everlasting, but there comes an end to it. It came in Russia in March, 1917. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. It was the regular night express to Petrograd, correspond ing somewhat to the Congressional Limited between New York and Washington. A few miles out of Moscow a difference arose between the engineer and the stoker, and in order to settle it they stopped the train and had a fight. One of the men hit the other on the head with a monkey wrench, injuring him pretty badly. Authority of some kind stepped in and arrested the assailant. The engineer's cab was blood-stained, and some authority unhitched the engine and sent it back to Moscow as evidence. The train all this time, with its hundreds of passengers, stood on the tracks waiting for a new engine and crew, and if it was not run into and wrecked it was because it was lucky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Reign: The True Story of an Adventurous Year in Russia Importance of movement called Russian revolution - Its varied as peets - Inevitableness of revolution in Russia - Causes - The dis ease Of autocracy - Insincerity of manifesto of October, 1905, seen in gradual withdrawal of constitutional rights then guaran teed - Elements of disintegration in Russian state - Ninety per cent. Of Russian people now oppose existing regime - Startling record of kibed and wounded in 1906 - Compared to French Ter ror - Length of Russian struggle compared to other revolutions in history - Author's qualifications for present undertaking Varied experience among Cossacks, terrorists and peasants. The Russian revolution is one of the vital issues of the world today. The political revolt, presenting, as it does, so many unique and dramatic developments, tends to distract the attention of the world from the broader, deeper, and certainly not less important, phases of the movement which are found in the social and eco nomic upheaval. The working out of these forces political, social, economic - in one stupendous move ment, constitutes one of the great revolutions of history. Revolution implies absolute change. Thether civil war, or intense parliamentary struggle, or both, is the method of accomplishment, is of small consequence. The ulti mate outcome is the Same. The present movement of the Russian people toward a changed condition of life is but the manifestation of underlying forces of history and destiny to which all nations must yield. Revolution in Russia during the first quarter of the twentieth century is as inevitable as the bursting of a Pelee or a Vesuvius. Download or read book From Liberty to Brestlitovsk written by Ariadna Tyrkova-Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Liberty to Brestlitovsk: The First Year, of the Russian Revolution I have tried in this book to elucidate, as far as was in my power, the development of the fundamental ideas of the Socialist parties in the Russian Revolution and their reflection in the life of the masses. A revolution is a very complex thing, especially in such an immense country as Russia, with its large and varied population, and it goes without saying that, far from claiming to have described it exhaustively, I realise only too clearly that there are numbers of questions on which I have barely touched. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Peasantry, Vol. 1: Their Agrarian Condition, Social Life, and Religion Our peasants have in fact something unusual about them. They have not lived upon the crumbs of intellectual food which have fallen from the tables of their cultured brethren. Their popular morals, their social aims, and their reli gion are all their own, and differ greatly from those prevailing with the upper classes. For the present generation the study of popular life has acquired an exceptional interest and importance, as the manifold influences of the new times have wrought a general downfall of the very basis of rural life. Russian peasants are passing through an actual crisis - economical, social, and religious-and the future of our country depends upon its solution.
