Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Improvement of the Rural School The improvement of the rural school is, at the present time, one of our most important educational problems. Although it does not present the same aspects in every state, no section is freed from the responsibility of endeavoring to, find its solution. It is not a new problem. Ever since the time of James G. Carter, and of Horace Mann, educators have called attention to the deficiencies of the coun try school. The counts in the indictment which have been brought against it through all these years differ but little, unattractive sites, miserable buildings, insufficient equipment, poorly prepared and poorly paid teachers, inadequate and incom petent supervision, unevenly distributed enrollment, irregular attendance, meager curriculum, and a poorly conducted school. Although it is true that much progress has been made in these particulars during the past three - quarters of a century, and although in certain localities conditions are con sidered fairly satisfactory, the need for reform is more strongly and more generally expressed to - day. Download or read book Rural School Improvement Classic Reprint written by R. E. Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School Improvement Houses may be classed among the great conservative forces of civilization. The beginnings of organized society may be traced back to the time when men first constructed for themselves permanent places of abode. The early Christian church insured the perpetuity of its creeds and its forms of worship by embodying these in cathedrals which have endured the ravages of time, and have come down to us as monuments to the wisdom and zeal of their builders. The building of a school house is a serious business. It is a work which cannot be done today and undone tomorrow. It lasts for years and throughout the period of its existence may largely determine the educational activities of the district, and will either help or hinder the whole develoment of the community. It therefore behooves the school board about to erect a home for the children of the district to consider carefully and to build wisely. They should remember that for at least six hours of the day the school house is to be the home of the rising generation. About it will cluster the associations which will brighten or cloud the memories of coming years. The experiences connected with the school building will largely influence the attitude of the child toward education for his entire life. Book Better Rural Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Better Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Betts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Rural Schools The rural school presents the most important problem in American education. In it are more than six million children coming from one great industry, agriculture the most fundamental and important of all industries. Under present conditions this occupation calls for an unusual degree of intelligence and skill. It demands the highest type of business management and industrial ability. And with the success of agriculture is linked the welfare of every American citizen, whatever be his status or vocation. Yet the rural school, the sole educational opportunity of most of our agricultural population, has been grossly neglected. In the midst of universal progress, it has been allowed to lag behind town and city schools. Abandoned to relative inefficiency, it has failed to hold the loyalty and) support of its constituency. The victim of changing social and industrial conditions, it has dwindled in size, diminished in influence, and lost step with the spirit of the times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education: A Complete Course of Study for Modern Rural Schools This book is the outgrowth of a series of lectures on Rural School Organization in the Minnesota state summer schools for teachers and of several revised courses of study planned for and executed in rural schools under the supervision of the author. While there are many books that treat of school organization and management, but few, if any of them, are written from the modern standpoint of an industrialized rural school; that is, a redirected course of study in which a broader and better country life is the ultimate aim. Except from this point of view the academic outlines and discussions probably contain little that is new. Even the division plan to avoid the evils of a closely graded rural school is not entirely an innovation. That some plan to avoid the thirty or forty daily recitations usually found in the country schools must be put into active operation before real efficiency can be expected is admitted by all who are familiar with the situation. The plan here suggested is not mere theory. It has been successfully used by scores of teachers during the last half dozen years. After all, "As is the teacher so is the school." In this period of educational unrest there is need for something more definite to guide the inexperienced teacher who has so little direct supervision, especially the rural schoolteacher. In this connection the section of the book devoted to industrial work should prove helpful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Ideals in Rural Schools IN presenting a second monograph on the rural school problem in this series we register our sense of the importance of rural education. Too long have the rural schools suffered from neg lect. Both the local communities and the State have overlooked the needs of the rural school system. At the present hour there is an earnest awakening of interest in rural life and its insti tutions. Already there is a small but certain movement of people toward the country and the vocation of agriculture. A period of agricultu ral prosperity, the reaction of men and women against the artificialities of city life, the devel 0pment of farming through the application of science, and numerous other factors have made country life more congenial and have focused attention upon its further needs. It is natural, therefore, that the rural school should receive an increased share of attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rural Education and the Consolidated School Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rural Education and the Consolidated School Classic Reprint written by Julius Bernhard Arp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education and the Consolidated School Much has been written of late concerning the Rural School Problem. All students of country life seem to agree that a radical readjustment of the entire rural educational and social system, to fit modern conditions, is imperative; but while a few of the leaders have hewn close to the vital spot, none so far have gone straight to the heart of the subject. The author is convinced that the time has come when we must insist upon a full program of reconstruction from the ground up, and begin to build at once. The gist of the problem is to establish a new school in which the essentials of a modern education can be taught. The old school, as still found in over ninety per cent of the rural districts, does not lend itself to such a program; and no amount of repair, addition, varnish, or veneer will transform it into an efficient, modern institution. Rebuilding is absolutely essential. Some friends of the rural school advocate comprehensive changes in the curriculum and justly demand that the training of country boys and girls shall culminate in a complete industrial and vocational education, adapted to twentieth-century life. They are agreed that rural teachers must measure up professionally and otherwise to their colleagues in our best school systems; they recognize that salaries paid must be adequate to insure high-class training and instruction; and yet - they fail to see that these things are impossible in an obsolete school system in which the first elements of success are wanting. The one-room school must go. It cannot provide the education to which country boys and girls are entitled and which the welfare of the country demands. That the best schools are found in our towns and cities is due largely to the fact that they have had close professional supervision. In urban' communities this has been easily supplied; but the schools of our rural districts, unlike those of our towns and cities, are widely separated: in one county moveover, they number as many as one hundred or one hundred and fifty; yet the entire burden of supervision has been placed on the should ers of the county Superintendent of education. Book The Landscape Improvement of Rural School Grounds Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Landscape Improvement of Rural School Grounds Classic Reprint written by J. W. Gregg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Landscape Improvement of Rural School Grounds The following bulletin, written at our request by Professor J. W. Gregg of the University of California, with the addition of lists of trees, shrubs and flowers, suitable for school grounds, furnished by Assistant Professor Ralph T. Stevens, and Miss K. D. Jones, while designed to meet some of the immediate and pressing needs of our schools, has elements of permanent value. It, therefore, should not only receive careful consideration now, but be kept for future reference and study whenever the planning or planting of school grounds is to be undertaken. The detailed plans for grounds are sufficiently numerous and varied to be distinctly helpful to any district where the school grounds are ample enough to admit of landscape treatment. Grounds of such amplitude are of course desirable for every school. It is not always feasible to provide them in large cities, but there is no suburban or rural district in California that can not have them if only there be a' resolute and an intelligently directed effort to do so. In districts where the present population is too small to provide or to maintain such grounds, the desired ends can be obtained by judicious consolida tion of neighboring schools. Such consolidation would result in a triple benefit, for not only could the school grounds be enlarged and beauti fied, but the school buildings could be made more spacious, and more convenient, while the courses of instruction, made more numerous and more varied, could be carried on under better conditions.
