Book Rural Life in the Piedmont of South Carolina

Download or read book Rural Life in the Piedmont of South Carolina written by Dennis S. Taylor and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture, the backbone of South Carolina's economy since the time of the first settlers in the late 1600s, has truly shaped the identity of the Piedmont region, serving as a common touchstone for the people of the Upstate. As the Palmetto State moves away from small, independent farms into a landscape dominated by big corporations and franchised companies, it is important to pay tribute to the industry that has enabled this state to proceed so successfully into the twenty-first century, both financially and culturally. Farming is much more than "cattle and crops," as some may think, and Rural Life in the Piedmont of South Carolina deals with the subject in over 180 striking photographs, displaying the grace, hard work ethic, and inventiveness of these men and women who have toiled under the South Carolina sun. As you thumb through these pages, you will venture into an era not so far in the past, but which seems exceedingly distant and foreign with each passing year. Exploring the rural landscapes between the years 1918 and 1968, this volume will allow you to experience firsthand the people who worked the land, their machinery and homes, the county agents who demonstrated new techniques for farming improvements, and many scenes of different areas in the Upstate with its many different annual harvests, from pigs, chickens, and cows to sorghum, cotton, alfalfa, hay, corn, tobacco, and peaches.

Book Rural Children in Selected Counties of North Carolina

Download or read book Rural Children in Selected Counties of North Carolina written by Frances Sage Bradley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Children in Selected Counties of North Carolina This inquiry into the conditions surrounding rural children was undertaken with the purpose of studying at first hand the everyday life of the rural child of the South, at home, at work, at school, and at play - his health, environment, needs, and opportunities. Since three-fifths of the children of the United States are rural children, it is obvious that the problems of the rural child must meet with careful consideration in any program of child conservation. At the request of the State board of health it was decided to conduct the study in North Carolina, which may fairly be considered a typical Southern State, with its characteristic population, customs, climate, soils, and crops. The inquiry was necessarily confined to definite and limited areas, and an effort was made to choose sections representative of rural conditions in different parts of the State. North Carolina is clearly divided into an eastern coastal plain of low-lying land, intersected by many streams, partly swamp land but mainly sandy and fertile loose loam soils; a central or piedmont region of higher altitudes and a greater variety of fertile soils; and a western or mountainous region in the heart of the Appalachian system. Cotton raising is the leading industry of the coastal and piedmont regions; in the mountains little crop farming is done and the chief dependence of the people is live-stock raising and the development of timber interests. A lowland county, lying at the junction of the coastal and piedmont sections, was selected as representative of conditions in the cotton belt, and a mountain county in the extreme western part of the State was chosen as a typical mountain county embodying characteristics not only of western North Carolina, but also of other mountainous sections of the Southern Appalachian system. The inquiry was initiated in the lowland county by a children's health conference and a child-welfare exhibit at the county seat, and followed by a series of conferences in each township of the county. Following the children's health conferences an intensive detailed house-to-house study of the children was made in one rural township of the lowland county (in the cotton belt), and in three smaller rural townships of the mountain county.
