Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rudens of Plautus Of the company of the celestials am I, a comrade of Jove, who sways all peoples and seas and lands. I am, as you see, a constellation, lustrous with a bright star, which ever rises in its season. Arcturus is the name I bear on earth, and in heaven. By night I shine conspicuous in the sky among the gods; my path lies among mortals in the day. Other constellations, too, descend from heaven to earth. Jupiter the lord of gods and men - he it is who stations us throughout the world, one here, one there, to take know ledge of the conduct, character, righteousness'and fealty of mortal men, that every one may meet with his deserts. \vhen men institute fraudulent actions on false witness, and when before the magistrate they deny on oath a deposit, their names we enter and report to Jove. Day by day he knows who is plotting mischief here below. When men seek to win a suit by perjury - rascals that they are I - or when by fraud they gain their cases before a judge, the judgment given he judges once again: far heavier the fine he orders than what they reap as litigants. The good he keeps entered on another list. And if the rogues take it into their heads that, they can propitiate Jupiter with offerings and sacrifice, they lose their pains and their money too. The reason is this: no sacrifice is acceptable to Jove from a perjurer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient: Editions of Plautus Editors suppose this couplet to be a mere fragment, the rest having been lost. I do not see why it should not be the whole prologue. The opening scene, one of the cleverest and liveliest in Plautus, explains the whole situa tion clearly enough, and Plautus probably never wrote a prologue for the play. The Revival' stage-manager would wish to announce -to his audience as briefly as possible that an old favourite was being te-staged. The expression 'plautina longa fabula' is noticeable in view of the frequent curtailment of scenes in the Revival' text. Book A Companion to Plautus

Download or read book A Companion to Plautus written by Dorota Dutsch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important addition to contemporary scholarship on Plautus and Plautine comedy, provides new essays and fresh insights from leading scholars A Companion to Plautus is a collection of original essays on the celebrated Old Latin period playwright. A brilliant comic poet, Plautus moved beyond writing Latin versions of Greek plays to create a uniquely Roman cultural experience worthy of contemporary scholarship. Contributions by a team of international scholars explore the theatrical background of Roman comedy, the theory and practice of Plautus’ dramatic composition, the relation of Plautus’ works to Roman social history, and his influence on later dramatists through the centuries. Responding to renewed modern interest in Plautine studies, the Companion reassesses Plautus’ works—plays that are meant to be viewed and experienced—to reveal new meaning and contemporary relevance. Chapters organized thematically offer multiple perspectives on individual plays and enable readers to gain a deeper understanding of Plautus’ reflection of, and influence on Roman society. Topics include metatheater and improvisation in Plautus, the textual tradition of Plautus, trends in Plautus Translation, and modern reception in theater and movies. Exploring the place of Plautus and Plautine comedy in the Western comic tradition, the Companion: Addresses the most recent trends in the study of Roman comedy Features discussions on religion, imperialism, slavery, war, class, gender, and sexuality in Plautus’ work Highlights recent scholarship on representation of socially vulnerable characters Discusses Plautus’ work in relation to Roman stages, actors, audience, and culture Examines the plot construction, characterization, and comic techniques in Plautus’ scripts Part of the acclaimed Blackwell Companions to the Ancient World series, A Companion to Plautus is an important resource for scholars, instructors, and students of both ancient and modern drama, comparative literature, classics, and history, particularly Roman history.

Book The Comedies of Plautus Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Comedies of Plautus Vol 2 of 2 written by Henry Thomas Riley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comedies of Plautus, Vol. 2 of 2: Literally Translated Into English Prose, With Notes, Containing the Amphitryon, Rudens, Mercator, Cistellaria, Truculentus, Persa, Casina, P nulus, Epidicus, Mostellaria, and Fragments In the Translation of the Plays contained in the present volume, the text of Fleckeisen has been adopted for the Amphitryon and the Rudens, and that of Weise (as given in the Tauchnitz Edition) for the others. In the supposed interpolations of the Amphitryon and Mercator, Schmieder has been followed. The previous English translations of the author are few in number. A part of the Menaechmi (translated, it is supposed, by William Warner) was published in 1595; to which reference will be found at page 372 of Vol. I. In the latter part of the seventeenth century Echard translated the Amphitryon, Rudens, and Epidicus. Thornton remarks that "his style is coarse and indelicate; when he aims at being familiar, he is commonly low and vulgar." In 1747, Cooke, the Translator of Terence, published a version of the Amphitryon, which Thornton speaks of as apparently intended merely for the use of learners." Of Thornton's translation of Plautus as a poetical work, it is impossible to speak in other than terms of admiration; but from the circumstance of its being in blank verse, it is not sufficiently close to convey to the English reader an accurate idea of the peculiar style of the author. A professed translation of seven of the Comedies of Plautus was published by the Rev. G. S. Cotter in 1827, but in it he avowedly omits a large portion of the text, and a still larger portion without the least intimation. In the present translation, particular attention has been given to the difficult and obscure passages, and it may not be presumptuous to hope that the Notes will be found of value to the classical student. It is hardly necessary to remind the Reader that the asterisks in the text denote where portions of the original are lost. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of Riley's Translation the Comedies of Plautus We must pause for a moment to notice the edition of Weise, Qued linburg and Leipsic, 1838, in two octavo volumes. This is utterly without worth, and undeserving of mention among the editions of Plautus. But Mr. Riley has made it the basis of his second volume, with the exception of the Amphitruo and Rudens. We may con gratulate ourselves that he has done so; for what has passed through the hands of both Weise and Riley is so corrupt that it saves us from all consideration of it.
