Book excerpt: Perhaps the most widely known poem in the world, the Rubaiyat has captured the imagination of millions of readers down the centuries. Its simple eloquence and lilting rhymes form an elegy to the transience of life and the beauty of human experience. The Rubaiyat resonates with readers around the world. Simultaneously hedonistic and reflective, sensual and philosophical, it translates the contradictions of human nature into succinct, lyrical verse. This collector’s edition, with page decorations by Edmund Dulac throughout, contains a detailed introduction to the poem by John Baldock. Originally penned in 11th-century Persia by astronomer and philosopher Omar Khayyam, the Rubaiyat was translated into English in the 19th century by scholar Edward Fitzgerald and gained a new lease on life.

Book excerpt: "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" is a collection of Persian poems, originally written by Omar Khayyam in the 11th century. The book is composed of quatrains, also known as "rubaiyat," that explore themes such as love, mortality, and the meaning of life. The poems are written in a simple yet profound style and are often filled with references to nature, wine, and the pleasures of life. Khayyam also questions the traditional beliefs of his time, including the idea of an afterlife and the role of religion in human affairs. One of the most notable features of the book is its use of imagery, which ranges from the beauty of a rose to the vastness of the universe. Khayyam's poems also contain a sense of melancholy and a recognition of the fleeting nature of life, which adds to the book's timeless appeal. The "Rubaiyat" has been translated into many languages and has become a beloved classic throughout the world. It continues to inspire readers with its timeless wisdom and its celebration of the beauty and impermanence of life.

Book excerpt: Omar Khayyam was born at Naishapur in Khorassan in the latter half of our Eleventh, and died within the First Quarter of our Twelfth Century. The Slender Story of his Life is curiously twined about that of two other very considerable Figures in their Time and Country: one of whom tells the Story of all Three. This was Nizam ul Mulk, Vizier to Alp Arslan the Son, and Malik Shah the Grandson, of Toghrul Beg the Tartar, who had wrested Persia from the feeble Successor of Mahmud the Great, and founded that Seljukian Dynasty which finally roused Europe into the Crusades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omar Khayyám was a medieval Iranian mathematician, philosopher, scholar, and poet. He was thought to have composed over 1,000 rubáiyát, or quatrains, in his lifetime. Many different scholars have translated selections of Khayyám’s quatrains, but Edward FitzGerald’s translation remains the most beloved. FitzGerald’s translation is interesting in that it isn’t a literal translation—rather, FitzGerald took significant artistic license in his interpretation. Thus it’s tough to say if we should call this a translation of the Rubáiyát, or poems by FitzGerald based on or inspired by Khayyám’s quatrains. Whatever we call it, this translation is a bright and lyrical celebration of the joys and beauties of everyday life. FitzGerald’s work has remained popular for hundreds of years precisely because of its uplifting and wondrous quality. This ebook is based on the fifth edition, which is very similar to the fourth edition, the last edition to be published in FitzGerald’s lifetime. The fifth edition was published posthumously based on FitzGerald’s notes.
