Download or read book Employment Equity in Canada written by Carol Agocs and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s, the Abella Commission on Equality in Employment and the federal Employment Equity Act made Canada a policy leader in addressing systemic discrimination in the workplace. More than twenty-five years later, Employment Equity in Canada assembles a distinguished group of experts to examine the state of employment equity in Canada today. Examining the evidence of nearly thirty years, the contributors – both scholars and practitioners of employment policy – evaluate the history and influence of the Abella Report, the impact of Canada’s employment equity legislation on equality in the workplace, and the future of substantive equality in an environment where the Canadian government is increasingly hostile to intervention in the workplace. They compare Canada’s legal and policy choices to those of the United States and to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and examine ways in which the concept of employment equity might be expanded to embrace other vulnerable communities. Their observations will be essential reading for those seeking to understand the past, present, and future of Canadian employment and equity policy.

Book Gathering Strength

Download or read book Gathering Strength written by Canada. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathering Strength is an integrated government-wide plan to address the key challenges facing Canada's Aboriginal people. Following an initial section on reconciliation of historic grievances, this report describes initiatives in the four areas addressed by the action plan: (1) partnerships (all schools received public awareness materials; students and teachers participated in cross-cultural programs; Aboriginal language and culture programs were funded and conducted; federal, provincial, and territorial ministers of Aboriginal affairs and five national Aboriginal organizations met for the first time in 2 years; and national and regional partnership think tanks were conducted); (2) governance (legislation for the Nisga'a Final Agreement was passed; 86 land claims were settled or negotiated; and over 100 professional development projects were completed for Aboriginal administrators); (3) new fiscal relationships (93 percent of First Nations communities completed community accountability and management assessments; a national model was completed for the Canada/First Nations Funding Agreement; the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association awarded its first Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager designations; and Canada, Saskatchewan, and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations completed exploratory fiscal relations and governance discussions); and (4) community, people, and economies (132 Income Security Reform demonstration projects were conducted in 354 First Nations communities, and numerous First Nations communities participated in initiatives related to community-based housing, water and sewer systems, and policing agreements). A final section describes progress on the Northern Agenda, including creation of Canada's third territory, Nunavut, in 1999, and various agreements related to land claims, self-government, transfer of programs and services, and job creation. Book How Ottawa Decides

Download or read book How Ottawa Decides written by French, Richard and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1984, How Ottawa Decides is an insider's view of how Ottawa tried throughout the 1970s to establish priorities and act on them. The book anatomizes the politics of the bureaucracy and the Cabinet, showing how power really operated in Ottawa during this period. It tracks the failure of many ambitious efforts to impose political control over government departments long used to operating without undue interference from elected officials. How Ottawa Decides is startling first-hand account of the forces that really ran the federal government in the 1970s.

Book A Source Book of Royal Commissions and Other Major Governmental Inquiries in Canadian Education 1787 1978

Download or read book A Source Book of Royal Commissions and Other Major Governmental Inquiries in Canadian Education 1787 1978 written by Cary F. Goulson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1981-12-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive primary reference to a rich and often neglected storehouse of information on Canada's educational background. As the boundary between full-fledged royal commissions and other official governmental inquiries is not always clear -- and many legislative committee inquiries and special department of education investigations have been as significant in educational development as regular commissions -- Goulson has included all major ministerial-level governmental inquiries in Canadian education between 1787 and 1978. More than 300 inquiries are included, among them general, special interest, judicial, legislative, parliamentary, and other governmental committees. The information provided for each includes the type of commission or committee, its size, chairman, purpose, dates of appointment and reporting, and primary source references, as well as a selection of its major conclusions and/or recommendations. Official governmental records and documents including the Reports themselves, Legislative Journals, House Debates and Hansard, Sessional Papers, Statutes, and Department of Education records were used as the resource base. This volume will be of specific interest to teachers and students of the history of education, and most educators, no matter what their fields, will find it useful.

Book Reorganizing Government

Download or read book Reorganizing Government written by Brian O'Neal and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Canada, as in other countries, politicians, public servants, academics, members of the private sector, and other citizens, are engaged in a serious examination of the function of government in society and how that function can best be performed. This document provides background for a discussion of government reform in a contemporary context and discusses a current attempt to alter the administrative environment of the federal government that picks up a number of the earlier themes. It provides an introduction to the following points: highlights of administrative reform attempts at the Canadian federal level since 1962, and government reform in a contemporary setting.

Book Global Trends in Public Sector Reform

Download or read book Global Trends in Public Sector Reform written by Michel S. de Vries and published by Primento. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have the underlying ideas behind New Public Management (NPM) been forgotten ? This book investigates whether this idea is reflected in the real world of public administration or if it is mere wishful thinking. The investigations in this volume comprise studies of not only European countries, but also major Asian, African and Latin-American countries, that is, countries of which much less is known regarding the developments in Public Administration reform. It provides the reader with a remarkable overview of what is actually happening in countries all over the world. More importantly, the chapters provide ample information which is indicative for an answer to the question raised above: What has remained of NPM and what is the role of NPM tools in public administration today?
