Book Arms and Armour of the Renaissance Joust

Download or read book Arms and Armour of the Renaissance Joust written by Tobias Capwell and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Renaissance is best known as an age of artists - Michelangelo, da Vinci, Titian and Holbein - but it is also the age of the noble patrons who challenged their painters and sculptors to create great art. These patrons were knights, military leaders and jousters. They played a central role in the story of another great Renaissance story, that of the armourer. 0Here, Tobias Capwell continues his history of jousting seen through surviving artefacts in the collection of the Royal Armouries. He reveals how the jousts and tournaments of the Renaissance transported knightly combat into a kind of performance art, with demonstrations of aristocratic skill and nerve, of superhuman strength and superlative horsemanship - and of cutting-edge equipment.

Book The Medieval Armour from Rhodes

Download or read book The Medieval Armour from Rhodes written by Walter J. Karcheski, Jr. and published by Royal Armouries. This book was released on 2003-11-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean island of Rhodes formed the base for the Knights of St John from 1306 until the capture of the island by the Ottoman Turks in 1522. The armour they left behind on Rhodes was discovered in the middle of the nineteenth century, and was recognised as an exceedingly important find for the study of medieval armour. Over the ensuing decades it was brought back to Europe, and since that time individual pieces and groups of the armour have been scattered among public and private collections in Europe and America. The authors of this study have tracked down almost all of the pieces from the find, and presented them in a catalogue form so that the total contents of the find can be assessed for the first time since their dispersal. The catalogue also describes the relationships that exist between the Rhodes pieces and other surviving elements of medieval armour, as well as armour depicted in medieval art, and provides an essential source of reference on the whole field of European armour of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.Winner of the inaugural Justus Lipsius Award 2002 for outstanding contributions to arms, armour and military studies

Book The Tower Armoury in the Fourteenth Century

Download or read book The Tower Armoury in the Fourteenth Century written by Thom Richardson and published by Royal Armouries. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The documents surviving from the privy wardrobe, the department which administrated the Tower armoury under Edward III, Richard II and Henry IV, provide a unique insight into the use of arms and armour in England as the Hundred Years War unfolded. Here, Thom Richardson expertly brings these documents to life. He answers many long-standing questions and challenges a number of assumptions, notably about the use of the longbow and the wearing of armour during that formative period of English history. Richardson shows how the previously peripatetic armoury became established in the Tower of London at the outbreak of the Hundred Years War, and grew into the national arsenal which today forms the basis of the Royal Armouries, the national museum of arms and armour."--Publisher's description.

Book European Weapons and Armour

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of arms in Western Europe from the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution. A treasury of information based on solid scholarship, anyone seeking a factual and vivid account of the story of arms from the Renaissance period to the Industrial Revolution will welcome this book. The author chooses as his starting-point the invasion of Italy by France in 1494, which sowed the dragon's teeth of all the successive European wars; the French invasion was to accelerate the trend towards new armaments and new methods of warfare. The authordescribes the development of the handgun and the pike, the use and style of staff-weapons, mace and axe and war-hammer, dagger and dirk and bayonet. He shows how armour attained its full Renaissance splendour and then suffered itssorry and inevitable decline, culminating in the Industrial Revolution, with its far-reaching effects on military armaments. Above all, he follows the long history of the sword, queen of weapons, to the late eighteenth century, when it finally ceased to form a part of a gentleman's every-day wear. Lavishly illustrated. EWART OAKESHOTT was one of the world's leading authorities on the arms and armour of medieval Europe. His other works on the subject include Records of the Medieval Sword and The Sword in the Age of Chivalry.
