Book Identity Diaspora and Return in American Literature

Download or read book Identity Diaspora and Return in American Literature written by Maria Antònia Oliver-Rotger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume combines literary analysis and theoretical approaches to mobility, diasporic identities and the construction of space to explore the different ways in which the notion of return shapes contemporary ethnic writing such as fiction, ethnography, memoir, and film. Through a wide variety of ethnic experiences ranging from the Transatlantic, Asian American, Latino/a and Caribbean alongside their corresponding forms of displacement - political exile, war trauma, and economic migration - the essays in this collection connect the intimate experience of the returning subject to multiple locations, historical experiences, inter-subjective relations, and cultural interactions. They challenge the idea of the narrative of return as a journey back to the untouched roots and home that the ethnic subject left behind. Their diacritical approach combines, on the one hand, a sensitivity to the context and structural elements of modern diaspora; and on the other, an analysis of the individual psychological processes inherent to the experience of displacement and return such as nostalgia, memory and belonging. In the narratives of return analyzed in this volume, space and identity are never static or easily definable; rather, they are in-process and subject to change as they are always entangled in the historical and inter-subjective relations ensuing from displacement and mobility. This book will interest students and scholars who wish to further explore the role of American literature within current debates on globalization, migration, and ethnicity.

Book excerpt: Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the King-Cat zine Never before have so few lines conveyed such a wealth of meaning as in John Porcellino’s quietly riveting book about memory, relationships, and selfhood. During a period of isolation following a divorce, Porcellino penned Map of My Heart, endowing it with the sensitivity and emotional depth so characteristic to his minimalist style. His tender drawings and spacious panels shape an autobiographical testimony where no moment is too small or insignificant for posterity. Pensive walks in the forest, encounters with rogue woodland creatures, school yard fights, Zen meditations, long lost crushes, and childhood exploits are the heart of this therapeutic account of the ever-fleeting present.

It is a Divine gift and Divine subtle faculty bestowed upon humanity. It is a polished mirror reflecting God. Like a general, the heart commands all other bodily organs and faculties, which are its troops, Everything that comes from a human being, whether good or bad, is a product of the heart. Mehmet Y. Seker, a scholar of Sufism and tasawwuf, studies the concept of the heart in the Islamic tradition looking at how it is approached by three prominent scholars and thinkers of Islam: Ghazali, Said Nursi, and Fethullah Gulen. Being the first in English to take as its focus the human heart from an Islamic spiritual, this book comparatively analyzes classical and modern age interpretations and evaluations on the concept and adds to the rich literature of spirituality in the Islamic tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Secrets of Greatness, Dr Burrell provides us with a route map to success of the very highest order, consistent with the greatest model of success known to us, Jesus Christ. Based upon an intimate study of the Old and New Testaments, and a lifetime’s work as a pastor, and drawing together such disparate threads as psychology, biology, history and motivational dynamics, Dr Burrell gives his readers a meticulous and definitive explanation of the essence of greatness and how it is within the capability of each and every one of us to achieve more than we ever thought possible. A thorough and passionate exploration of what it means to be great, using examples of great men and women through the ages, Secrets of Greatness decries the notion that true success lies in power, money and status, and illustrates instead that the pinnacle of human achievement is attainable only through the transformative and healing power of our relationship with God. In each chapter and section, the author shines a light on a different aspect of the process of becoming what we are destined to be in the Creator’s great plan for us, and illuminates the spaces through which we all must travel on our journey to greatness. Dr Burrell explores his subject with the keen mind of a scholar, the compassion of a man of God and the tenacity of a warrior, and has written a book which is as uplifting as it is useful. It is a book which can only fill us with hope for the future. Secrets of Greatness is a corrective for our secular age – a spiritual book in materialistic times - and a tonic for all those who thirst for a different measure of success than is commonly presented in our media.

Download or read book Searching for Golden Empires written by William K. Hartmann and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively book recounts the explorations of the first generations of Spanish conquistadors and their Native allies. Author William K. Hartmann brings readers along as the explorers probe from Cuba to the Aztec capital of Mexico City, and then northward through the borderlands to New Mexico, the Grand Canyon, southern California, and as far as Kansas. Characters include Hernan Cortés, the conqueror; the Aztec ruler Motezuma; Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, a famous expedition leader; fray Marcos de Niza, an explorer-priest doomed to disgrace; and Viceroy Antonio Mendoza, the king’s representative who tried to keep the explorers under control. Recounting eyewitness experiences that the Spaniards recorded in letters and memoirs, Hartmann describes ancient lifeways from Mexico to the western United States; Aztec accounts of the conquest; discussions between Aztec priests and Spanish priests about the nature of the universe; Cortés’s lifelong relationship with his famous Native mistress, Malinche (not to mention the mysterious fate of his wife); lost explorers who wandered from Florida to Arizona; and Marcos de Niza’s controversial reports of the “Seven Cities of Cíbola.” Searching for Golden Empires describes how, even after the conquest of Mexico, Cortés remained a “wildcat” competitor with Coronado in a race to see who could find the “next golden empire,” believed to lie in the north. It is an exciting history of the shared story of the United States and Mexico, unveiling episodes both tragic and uplifting.
