Book excerpt: Marine geological evidence supports rapid retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in the eastern Ross Sea before the last glacial maximum. As the only accessible marine record of a major drainage outlet of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), this central and eastern Ross Sea dataset provides a unique opportunity to test the hypothesis of WAIS instability, assess its regulating role in eustasy, and explore the geological record of paleo-ice stream behavior. As the last vast marine-based ice sheet on the planet, the WAIS is seen as a key source of potentially rapid sea level rise. The collapse and disintegration of the WAIS would raise sea level by 5 to 6 meters, a major threat to the world's coastal cities. Marine geological data were collected along the axis of large bathymetric troughs during a 1999 cruise of the R/V Nathanial B. Palmer. Thick till sheets, extensive lineations, and multiple grounding zone wedges imaged on seismic profiles and multibeam bathymetric records, indicate that troughs in the Ross Sea were occupied by paleo-ice streams during the last glacial maximum. Ice stream boundaries in the eastern Ross Sea are characterized by laterally accreting sedimentary strata indicating lateral migration of ice streams. The abrupt transition from lineated to non-lineated morphologies reflects sharp ice stream margins. Sediment cores recovered glacial-marine deposits overlying till, a facies succession that indicates an abrupt transition from subglacial to open marine deposition. High concentrations of ice rafted debris in the glacial-marine units and iceberg furrows suggest mass wasting of the ice sheet and iceberg calving from the grounding line during retreat. Corrected radiocarbon ages of samples taken above the contact between subglacial (till) and glacial-marine sediments range from 23.4 to 26.0 ka. B.P., indicating pre-LGM ice sheet withdrawal in the eastern Ross Sea. This was long before the ice sheet retreated from the western Ross Sea and is inconsistent with previous models for ice sheet retreat in the region.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines several aspects of the unique physical-biological system that controls biogeochemical cycling in the Ross Sea, the largest continental shelf sea along the Antarctic margin and the most biologically productive region in the Southern Ocean. The core component of the research involves interpretation of data from two oceanographic cruises to the region, one during Summer of 2005--2006 and another in Spring of 2006--2007. Four key research questions are addressed. (1) What physical mechanisms force spatial and temporal variability in mixing depths? (2) How does the dynamic physical environment characteristic of Antarctic continental shelf seas structure distributions of biomass and chemical tracers of production? (3) What key physical and physiological mechanisms control the 13C/12C ratio of organic and inorganic carbon in waters on the Ross Sea continental shelf? and (4) How do physiological variables interact with environmental variability to control phytoplankton taxonomic zonation? Chapter 1 presents an introduction to ocean carbon biogeochemistry and the oceanography of the Southern Ocean and the Ross Sea. Chapter 2 examines the mechanisms effecting early season stratification in the Ross Sea. Lateral advection in the region of upper ocean fronts is shown to be an important mechanism setting early season stratification. Chapter 3 examines several tracer-based methods for estimating upper ocean net community production in the Ross Sea, with explicit recognition of the complexities associated with control volume assumptions and high rates of temporal change. Chapter 4 considers the environmental controls on the distribution of 13C/12C ratios in the Ross Sea. It is shown quantitatively that the two dominant phytoplankton taxa in the Ross Sea have different intrinsic fractionation factors, likely as a result of differing carbon-acquisition physiologies. Air-sea exchange is shown to occur with very noisy fractionation. Finally, Chapter 5 examines the interaction of algal physiology with environmental variability, addressing the key physiological-environmental controls on the taxonomic distribution of phytoplankton in the Ross Sea. While it is difficult to draw concrete conclusions, the most compelling line of evidence suggests that differing photoprotective capacities is the most important physiological characteristic structuring taxonomic distributions. An appendix presents a design for an infrared absorbance-based instrument for the determination of total dissolved inorganic carbon in seawater.

Book excerpt: This publication is composed of papers presented at an International Symposium on Athalassic (Inland) Salt Lakes, which was hosted by the University of Adelaide, South Australia, during a week in October 1979. The genesis of the Symposium was at the Copenhagen Congress of the International Association of Limnology (S.1. L.) where it was noted that a number of papers concerned with inland saline lakes were distributed throughout sessions in such a way as to make it difficult to attend all of them. A number of participants at the Congress felt that the ecology of salt lakes had greater homogeneity or cohesiveness than this sort of distribution would suggest, and it was decided that a symposium on salt lakes be held. The symposium was the first under the aegis of the S.l. L. to be held in Australia, and it was very well attended, with participants coming from many countries. The week long programme produced a number of lively and interesting sessions on all aspects of athalassic saline lakes. Participants stayed on after the Symposium for an expedition to Lake Eyre, in the nQrth of South Australia, and were given one of the best of all possible introductions to the Australian environment.
